Hi all. I don't seem to be tolerating much food nowadays, so i was thinking of preparing easy on the tummy smoothies with my blender, so I can put some calories in.

Any ideas on smoothies you prepare for days when you don't feel much like eating? Thanks

I eat (drink?) them every day. I don't know if they'll work for all, but here's what I do:

Light or fat free vanilla ice cream
Skim milk (small amount)
Reduced-fat peanut butter

I mix it up in my Magic Bullet. SOOOO good.....

I have read this great book. What to Eat with IBD. The author is a dietician who has Crohn's. She says to avoid all berries even blueberries because of the seeds. This makes it difficult for me as I like to make berry smoothies but the peanut butter one above sounds pretty good.

I here ya, Seeker. I LOVE strawberries, but they don't love me back :)

What is it with the seeds?!!??

I was wondering as I have been told to avoid them but surely they are so tiny thye won;t be a problem? I thought seeds were just an issue for diverticular disease?

Anyone still have seeds and be fine? I am missing my tomatoes and Kiwifruit :(

Are there any seeds smaller than strawberry seeds? Those are the smallest I can think of and they still kick me in the guts. Jerks :(

yeah peanut butter is a good smooth way to put some calories in
i dont know whats wrong with seeds but cant tolerate them either
strange i can tolerate greasy junk food most of the days but cant eat something like figs or tomatoes,do seed contain fibers or just hard to digest?

That is weird, MD, but I find I have the same problem. I can eat pizza, calzones, etc., but then I'll eat a carrot or some nuts and bam, sick as a dog.

I am enjoying a PB&Banana smoothie as I write this. Thank you for the yummy ideas :D

A couple of scoops of Vanilla Ice cream
a few ice cubes
1/2 cup of water
2 ripe bananas
2 tbs creamy peanut better
2 tbs of skim milk powder or protein powder

I use the water to help blend the ice and ice cream. Then add the rest of the ingredients and pulse a couple of times.

I want a magic bullet but i have a junky blender and I can't seem to find a good enough reason to have both...but i still want one, a cheap one. haha

Re: seeds - strawberries give great flavor to smoothies. I cut off the stems and a little bit of the bottom, then slice down the sides until all the seeds are off. Still tastes like a strawberry, but slipperier. Also, with tomatoes, I slice them for sandwiches, then chop out the middle where the seeds are.

I just can see myself skinning a strawberry. That is beyond my threshold of Patience. I am not even eating apples because I cant bring myself to peel one :(

Every morning I've been using this powder in a smoothie with almond milk or coconut milk and either a banana or blueberries or a peach (or a combo): http://www.amazinggrass.com/chocolate-green-superfood-powder.html I also love cinnamon so I add a ton of it!
it gives me a lot of energy to start the day, and it's chocolatey but has only 2g of sugar (personally I can't tolerate refined sugar at all, so that part was good) If you want it thicker or have more fat/calories you could also add almond butter or coconut butter, depending on what kind of stuff you can tolerate. don't know if the sugar/yeast thing is relevant to you, but I avoid peanut butter because peanuts can have traces of yeast which upsets my belly. Almond butter tastes better to me, though, anyway....hope that helps!

That makes sense Seeker, I can't imagine that having little hard, pokey particles grazing against our poor inflammed tummies is going to feel overly nice.

I am going to try to work Protein powder into my smoothies now. I got put on it because my weight is not improving. So now along with 1000 cal of ensure/day I need to choke down three scoops of this wretched tasting stuff.

Smoothies seems like the easiest place to hide it. But Moderation! Lat week I read this thread and went all nuttso making a 1L smoothie with 2 bananas and peanut butter. I chugged the whole thing down in around 20 mins. It was the last thing I ate before checking into the local ER for some pain relief. They held me for a full 7 days :(

round three begins

Was searching for some recipes myself and found these from someone with crohns. I'm hoping to gain some weight, so these are inclined toward that.

Try mixing a bottle of ensure, 2 scoops of ice cream, and a scoop of peanut butter in a blender then drink it like a milk shake.

INGREDIENTS

* 1 banana
* 1 tofutti cutie
* about 1 cup of juice
* about 1 cup of Vanilla Rice Dream

DIRECTIONS

1) Mix everything in a blender.

Ingredients

* 3 generous scoops lactose-free vanilla ice cream
* 1/2 can Boost

Directions

1) Blend if you have a blender, otherwise stir to a shake. Tastes best through a straw.

Ingredients:

* 1½ tsp. unflavored gelatin
* 2 Tbsp cold water
* 3 Tbsp sugar
* 2 Tbsp light corn syrup
* 1½ cups of any flavor Ensure
* 3 Tbsp corn oil
* 1 tsp vanilla extract

1) Soften gelatin in cold water.
2) Add sugar and corn syrup. Heat slowly to dissolve sugar and gelatin.
3) Combine Ensure, corn oil and gelatin-sugar mixture. Mix well and pour into blender. Blender capacity should be at least 5 cups. Blend until thick and creamy.
4) Add vanilla extract, if desired, and mix well. Or add fruit to the blender at this point. Blend well.
5) Pour blended mix into an ice cube tray and freeze until very icy.
6) Place back into blender and blend until smooth.
7) Pour into container and return to freezer until firm.
Make three ½ cup servings.

This is a shake my doctor recommended for me to gain weight:
2-3 scoops of Ice cream 1 Packet of any flavor Carnation Instant Breakfast

And any other things that you might like to add like fruit candy bars or other stuff.

Ingredients:

1 instant breakfast packet, any flavor
3/4 c. whole milk
1/4 c. heavy whipping cream
1/2 c. ice cream, any flavor

Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Ingredients:

1/2 c. whole milk

1/2 c. heavy whipping cream

1 banana

1 1/4 c. strawberries (fresh or frozen)

3/4 c. lemon sherbet

2 tbsp. dry skim milk powder

Directions:

1.
Combine all ingredients in a blender.
2.
Blend until smooth.

I'm pretty lucky as far as dairy goes. At first I stayed away from all dairy afraid they would set me off, but later found out I could pretty much have as much of them (within reason) as I wanted without symptoms. I haven't tried all these recipes yet, but I just got a new single serving blender so I'll let you know how it's going. I've struggled to gain weight and hope that adding an early morning smoothie or late night one will help.

A Carrot peeler is my new best friend. I eat an apple a day usually with no problem and i'm in a pretty harsh flare-up right now. I drew the line at grapes though.

There is a powder called SP complete made by Standard Process which can give you some veggies in your smoothie without making it gross. If your like me many veggies are a little rough on the gut so I use that and V-8 fusion to get a couple servings of veggies right in the morning.

PB is No No for me. Pretty much single handedly sent me into Crohn's hell.

Ok I take 1/2 cup apple sauce and a generous shake of apple pie spice and blend it with a vanilla can shake. Yummy! Taste like apple pie a la mode. They also have some instant CF coffe pouches with flavors like hazelnut or carmel they are great to ad flavor to ensure or whatever. If you are in the mood for something savory. I take 1/2 lb lean ground beef brown and strain add 2 cans of tomato soup 2 cans water and 1 paket taco seasoning then I blend it. I was surprised I tolerated it so well. Tastes like chili. I also just blended chunky new england clam chowder and that was really good too.

Does anyone find that they can't tolerate eating a banana but if it's blended in a smoothie they are OK?
