Puts hand up!!

Originally from North Queensland but pretty much grew up in Brisbane. Currently living in Darwin, hopefully not for too much longer.

Cool

I'm in Adelaide myself as for weather was raining a bit but now were havin low 30's phew!!

Hello. I am thinking of going to live in Australia, but I am unsure about the health care system there for someone suffering from Crohn's Disease - here in Great Britain we have a good National Health Service support.

Basketcase, are you living in Australia now? and if so, are you happy with the health care you are receiving there?

Hi Testlady,

Here in Aus I think the health system is pretty good. We have a national medicare system which you pay for through the tax system, 1.5% of your taxable income, withheld from your wages. With this you get access to a public hospital at no additional expense. You dont get to choose your doctor and the waiting times very depending on where you live etc but once in the system your treatment is no different to those that pay. In fact most of the private doctors also work in the public system.

If you choose to pay for private health inurance you also have to pay the 1.5% for mediare. Private insurance is an additional expense but you get to choose your doctor, waiting times are minimal (again depending on where you live) and depending on what level of insurance you have, most of your medical expenses are covered. Although, having said that, most doctors charge more that the insurance will cover and you have to pay the difference or 'gap'.

Being in the defence I havent had to pay a cent so far for any surgeries, pill cam, specialists or medication but that may all change soon. :(

Thank you Lulu, for explaining. That is really helpful.

Do any of you know if there is a state-aided health facility for those who cannot work due to illness? I am on DLA here, and am not sure if I would be able to work in the future. However, my husband has a good career so I think we would still be eligible to emigrate.

The medicare system here is available to everyone whether working, unemployed or on disabililty. Only difference is they dont pay the levy but are still entitled.

Centrelink has a health care card system too where presrciptions are capped at a cheap price ($5.50 each i think)

Plus we hav surgerys that bulk bill so visiting the dr costs nothing
alot of other things but I can't think of them ATM

yes, sorry, meant to say that choice of doctor, waiting times refers to specialists etc. Even under medicare you can see whatever GP you wish and quite a lot will only charge whatever the government pays so in effect it is free.

Even though people here whinge it really is a great system. I have been treated by both the public & private system (quite often there are only public specialists where I live. Private ones dont want to live here!) and cant complain, generally the treatment has been great.

Most countries have a reciprical agreement whereby if you are entitled to the equivalent of public health in your home country then you will qualify for medicare in Australia regardless of a pre-existing condition.

Hey guys!

Another fellow Aussier over here. Im based in Sydney NSW.

Testlady, yes we do have a income system for the ones who are too ill to work. This falls under a government organisation called 'Centrelink'.

hello 3132757!
just wondering what bioresonance is??

im in private health cover and work in a private hospital and have had nothing to do with the public system untill recently. iv been seeing 2 specialists in teh public system and have found no problems. between my private specialists and public ones the only difference is that i dont pay for one lol.

bindi

Hey Bindi,

You can call me Fou, i think that would roll off easier than 7 digits :)

I agree with you on the point you made in regards to the difference in doctors between private and public, both are the same. I am seeing the top specialists here in Sydney, all of which do both private and public work. I guess the only benifit of private is waiting times. But i havent found it to be an issue as of yet.

What is bioresonance? Good question. Its really hard to explain actually, its an alternative treatment, a form of Electro-acupuncture. Basically its a diagnosis machine that is used to diagnose you and then treat you respectively. Actually, some GPs have this diagnosis tool in there clinic. I was actaully diagnosed by a doctor that i have a ileum problem and gut leakage before i had a colonoscopy just by bioresonance, and then he forwarded me to a specialist to get it checked out.

I thought it was a lot of hocus pocus, and damn its not cheap, but there have been a quite few papers and studies conducted on it to show that its not placebo. There is even one paper with was a double blind test on the efficacy of bioresonance on the treatment of Chrons disease with great results. So yeah, im giving it a go and it seems to be doing me really well! (5 months of treatment)

But be careful, I have been "treated" by practitioners who were bogus, so you have to know what to look out for. As in any industry, there are those who just want to take you for a ride.

I cant find that paper about the double blind test on Crohns, though I do have it at home somewhere, but here are some papers if you are interested in reading about it:

Hi everyone another true blue aussie!! He..he.. yep there wasn't too many of us when I joined last year but starting to get our numbers up!! Yah.

Aussie...aussie...aussie...oi...oi..oi!!!! :)

I live in tropical, hot and humid Townsville in North Queensland! Born and breed here. I know about rain has been raining since xmas on and off but we did have a few weeks where it just didnt stop and now we have a cyclone on the way... bring on more rain. Hopefully I don't get blown away this weekend ;)

Bindi Im glad to see you finally joined up yourself and I hope the forum is of great support. Say hi to ya mum for me... ha..ha.. I sound like Rove! But seriously say hi hope she is doing ok and not stressing as much as last time I spoke to her. Bundy... my hubby is in love with!! Ha..ha.. we even visited the rum factory so he could check out how his beloved is made ;) LOL

I have also been thru public and now private health systems and I can't say I have anything bad to say about either. I found the public system was pretty good and time wise didn't really have to wait long and I know when I have had an emergency have alway gotten in straight away. The only difference I have found is the luxury of it all the private hospital are so much nicer and more comfortable compared to having to share a room with 75 year old guy.. boo! You still can chose your spec in public well I did my GP gave me an option of who I wanted to see and I asked for my current GI. The doctors are def the same as mine present GI I used to see public but once I got private health I went to him privately and paid for his service just meant I got in within a week of calling and my scope within a week of seeing him. Also I can now call him anytime I like! I think our system works pretty good there is always going to be issues but overall I haven't had any issues.

Glad too see some more Aussies on here

I havnt been too qld for years (lucky for you guys lmao)
hope the weather is kind too you and not too severe

heyhey tan!
rob! the weather is being nice to me at the moment... but tan on the otherhand may be about to be blown away from the cyclone hehe.

tan.. mum is goodgood.. lol trying to learn how to destress! hmm im not a huge fan of rum. iv done a tour, but when i was in highschool haha.. oooh and see we won the sunrise bequ thing. the sunrise group was meant to come here but got scared away with the cylcone!!

Ha...ha.. what a bunch of wusses!! Scared of a little cyclone.. lol. Glad your mum is going good too.

Hopefully we might be lucky and only get the outskirts out the cyclone when it hits the coast.. fingers cross as they are now saying it could be a Cat 3 by the time it crosses. Down south is already coping a hiding from the winds.. Bindi you guys will probably get a bit of rain out of it as they are saying its worse on the southern side of the cyclone. But who knows these things are so unpredictable! Just gotta keep an eye on it and be prepared.

That's prob only advantage of bein in sa
no cyclones etc
but then we barely get rain here lol
but heat ...... I'm over it lol

Well we were lucky and the cyclone for us here is Townsville was a bit of a fizzer but was prepared none the less... can't say Bowen and Mackay was so lucky they coped it, hopefully not too much damage was done.. but they are getting heaps of rain out of it!
Yeah it would be nice to not have to worry about cyclones each wet season but am used to it I have lived in the ville all my life, just gotta keep on top of it all and be prepared, plus my house is only 3 years old so had been built strong and to the latest building standards for cyclones! I couldn't imagine not getting rain we had it for a few weeks straight in Feb, the other year we didn't see sun for 40 days as it didn't stop raining which got a bit annoying but I guess at least our dams are full and we don't have to worry about water restrictions.

Just thought I'd bump this back up
as there's been a few new Aussies on here as Of late

Well, just letting you know I'm an Aussie just in case you hadn't already worked it out! :ywow:

Also by me stating the bleeding obvious it bumps us up over the poms. YAY!

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Hey Rob. Looks like the Poms are cheating!!! I guess now anything really does go.......game on. YEAH!

All good cheat or not
least ours is the original idea lol
the pommy one is jus a copy hahaha

Hi,

I'm bailey and that's my pic in Dusty's avatar. For the life of me I can't work out why she just doesn't use her own photo! (((shrug))).

Well I'm a Himalayan but since I was born here I'm an Aussie too, YAY!!!

Gotta say I'm a bit distracted at the moment 'cause Dusty keeps yelling out, THANKS!, due to the fact that I'm bumping this thread up for her. She can really be a PITA at times but she is oh so easily pleased.

:cheerss:

Hey Bailey, great minds think alike and small ones seldom differ!!! She is the former, but I'm not so sure about the latter.

Aussie by default here, I can't get away from it. My wife bought deck stain today...you guessed it Australian Timber Oil...

you're welcome for the bump btw.

I just realised, Rob you're the guy doing the trial with Kate yeah? We need to catch up sometime :)

Hey Stefan

I'm not far from there myself I head upto littlehampton regularly too

Hey, another aussie, I live in Caloundra on the beautiful sunshine coast QLD. I moved from Brisbane earlier this year. I read with interest about bioresonance. Can anyone give me a name of a practioner in brisbane or up here on the coast. thanks

I live in Brisbane and adore it.
I know of some great doctors a bit further south of you if you're interested Jazmac. I travel up to Caboolture to see my GI from Brisbane but it's so worth it.

Australian by birth; moved to the U.S. nearly 30 years ago to marry my New Yorker husband. We live in a little town in Connecticut and are very happy here. Wonderful medical care....

im not an aussie, but for some reason those up above think New Zealand is part of Austrailia, i had a parcel arrive last week sent from the states, it was addressed to New Plymouth Austrailia, i sent my address as new zealand and i was very surprised it arrived here in NZ

Hey Trev,

I live in a small town on the Northern Tablelands in New South Wales. We are halfway between Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway.

Dusty. :)
