Son’s surgery today. August 19th.

well tomorrow is the big day and a good thing too cause he is feeling pretty crappy with some vomiting today. we are not looking forward to the next few days but see the light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully some relief for years to come.

My son also had resection when he was 17 and he has had a very good outcome. His surgery was in April 2011 and he has been in remission ever since. :)

My daughter also had a resection when she 14, that was in July 2006 and she too has remained in remission since that time.

Everything crossed that your boy has the same positive outcome that my two have.

Thinking of you and your son today. My 15 yr old son had a right hemicolectomy last year and has never felt better hope your son recovers well and gets back to having a normal life again x
 
thanks to every one for the lovely kind messages and thoughts. we ended up in the hospital the night before with constant vomiting but as he would have had his surgery cancelled due to the doc wanting to put gastro on his charts , the nurse said to go home before he could examine him. we all new it was due to his crohns and when we came back to the hospital in the morning his sugeon agreed with our decision as she was sure it was his crohns also. Surgery went well and today he is feeling slightly less pain but still attatched to machines and tubes.
he had 25 cm of his small bowel removed , and appendicectomy and i thing his illium but not %100 about that.
both surgeon and gastro specialist is happy with his progress and feel long term remission is on the cards but still obviously in the lap of the gods.

With the removal I am guessing he has an ostomy bag? If he does is it temporary and the plan is to reconnect everything?

If they were able to do the resection and reconnect how long until he expects normal bowel function?
 
no bag was never expected to be needed. from a surgeons point of view recovery is 3 weeks at home from school and no sport for 6 weeks. from diet point of view we havent got that far . will find out before we go home.
he is better today pain wise and has his nasogastric tube removed with no problems so far.
still on his button for pain and drip for electrolytes. tolerating ice chips today.

harry is much better today. much less pain and managed a shower on his own.
he is on free fluids which he is tolerating well.
not quite laps yet dave but certainly heading towards that.
still has his drip for antibiotics and panadol
at the moment it looks like home early next week. hoping to see the dietitian before he leaves in regards to his crohns but from a surgical point of view nothing is off limits
 
What wonderful news! I hope you are able to rest a little more knowing he is doing well post op.You can't forget about your health.This is concern,not nagging...there is a difference.:)

I hope some weight has been lifted from your entire family's shoulders.I'm sending healing thoughts your way.Thanks for updating the post,this good news is a happy thought I can carry with me through my day.

If you make sure he has a squeaky wheel on his IV stand,he won't be able to sneak away when he gates more mobile.:ylol2:
 
thanks Dave 13. we have had news today that he is coming home tomorrow.
he is eating and drinking well and now has zero pain neither from surgery or whats more exciting no crohns pain. looking forward to having him home and not the hour drive each way to the hospital everyday

He sounds strong and determined. I'm guessing he gets that from his mom ;-)

I hope the next phase of recovery is just as smooth. Sending loads of good vibes your way!

thanks dave we are now home and settled. he even has a tidy room thanks to me lol
he has no pain and looking for food something he hasnt done for a long time.

Hi Deb,you are more than welcome.So what is Harry craving first? Hopefully you can have some uneventful Home time and take a breath. :)

mac and cheese. not the one i make but out of a box lol he is to have lots of small meals high protien low residue to help put some weight on. hes 48 kilos and 6ft so you can imagine what he looks like.
doc is very positive for long term remission so fingers crossed.
he is to continue his aza for about 6 months and see how we go from there. only 100 mgs so not too bad.
shouldnt you be in bed ?
 
No pain is a good thing.I hope your Winter weather is allowing a lot of outside time.Does Harry have friends that visit?

yeh harry is mr popular so has had visitors since we have been home. not so many in hospital cause it is hour from where we live. bit hard for school kids on trains etc after school. they all facebooked and called though. the weather is beautiful today 23 degrees. sunshine is a lovely change from our wet winter we have had.

I'm sure having his friends stay in touch was a big help while he was in the hospital.Even better he can hang out with them again.Just being 'normal' is healing,to have friends treat you as you,and not a sick person.
 
So fab to hear all went well with the surgery and is continuing to go well with the recovery. Woohoo!
