I had posted the other day about the medication I am on and the side effects that I have been having.

I have noticed in the last week that I have small bumps on the under side of my lips (mainly the top lip - going towards the corners as well). They seem to be just under the skin. They appear to be white and it looks like closer to the corner of my mouth it is getting bigger/swelling. My lips haven't bothered me until today. I feel a bit of a burning sensation.

I have had chapped lips before but this is different. Not sure if it's related to the medication or maybe I am just being super paranoid?

TIAA

I wanted to add that I came across some information that states this could be caused by a B12 deficiency...which I am and it appears the B12 pills aren't helping!

Hi Tiaa,

Hey I have had similar bumps/ulcers on the inside of both my upper and lower lips - I think this is typical of crohns.

Regards
Sandy

Thanks for the reply Sandy. I called my GI today but his secretary wasn't available. I see him on the 26th. I am going to try some chap stick for now. I did notice it's spreading to the corner of my mouth more and it was burning last night.

No probs. You may be able to get some topical ointment like bonjella or similar from your local pharmacy? They should go away after a few days though so your right in getting medical advice. Hope it clears up soon. Sounds irritating for you.

Since you are B12 deficient I would be inclined to think that oral medication isn't going to cut the mustard with you. If your ?Crohns is in your terminal ileum, this is the only area of the bowel where it is absorbed, and there is inflammation and perhaps damage and scarring then all the oral B12 in the world will do you not one ounce of good. You must receive it via a different route.

Has it ever been discussed with you about having injections?

I would also recommend you taking a B complex supplement.

Thanks Dusty! My scope showed that everything was fine but I haven't received any results from my biospy. Injections were mentioned but everything is on hold due to waiting for results. I honestly don't know how far he got with the scope (if he got to the TI). My lips are getting worse so I'll be calling on Monday to see if they suggest me stopping the Ammi or not.

I went to the pharmacy today to ask the Pharmacist about my lips - to see if it was a side effect of the ammi and he said NO. Another thing to add to my ever growing list for my appt next Monday with the GI! :frown:

I started taking Imuran nearly a year ago and am experiencing several of the side effects including canker sores and ulcers on my lips. Right now my bottom lip is swollen and painful with sores. Hate to go out in public as I feel like my lip enters a room before me...lol. Seeing my doctor tomorrow and I am praying he can work some magic on me.

Good Luck Mary! Let me know what the doc says! My bottom lip is getting worse now...can't wait for Monday!!
