Hi, Ive had flu symptoms and sore throat 5 days now. In my third week of starting Imuran. So went to hospital as GP not available Was told evidence of Tonsilitis. While being sick this last week my wrist has been playing up and I have been having lots of heartburn. Had only mild abdominal twinges, no D but this morning I have very sore and touch of blood anus. Stopped taking my regular panadol osteo 2 665mg 3 times a day,as it wasn't doing anything for the wrist and other aches and pains only to find out how sore my throat really is. Just wondering could this be CD in my throat and not tonsilitis. I was given Amoxycillin & clav this morning from a doc before I got home and had my sore ring. See my GI on the 2nd.

Crohns can affect people from the mouth to the anus and even causes skin problems so its possible but its also likely that you could have gotten an infection and do have tonsillitis or strep throat even. I know I get strep throat far too often (once or twice a year). If its strep then antibiotics are needed to prevent scarlet fever. Both strep and tonsillitis can cause you to feel flu like symptoms as well. If the antibiotics start clearing up your throat issue in a few days (3-4 usually) then chances are its not your crohns. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

If you have a lot of heart burn it might be that you have ulcers in your throat. I'd take something for that and see if it doesn't improve.

I forgot I even read that Crohns08. :p Acid reflux is a common concern for people with Crohns. Talk to your GI about it when you see them cause they may be able to prescribe something for it.

Crohn's can cause problems in other areas but I also think that some medications can predispose you to infections your body would normally fight off because they lower your immune system. However, lots of heartburn could cause ulcers. So, I suppose it could be either one. I guess the best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor.

Hope you feel better.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. Sorry I took so long getting back to you all. I've had it for 4 weeks. It was acid reflux thought I was going to have heart attack while waiting to see GP the other day. I have been put on 40mg Nexium about a week ago, my throats a lot better but still sick. I could feel the congestion down behind the nose (post Nasal drip and still can) never had runny nose the whole time. runnny My head was all stuffed up with itchy ears and head rushes with shoulder pain bending over still getting a bit. I could feel it getting in my chest thinking it was going to turn into Bronchitis that I have been treated for a lot over the years. Mild heartburn off and on over the years and I'd throw down a Zantac now and again but have never put the two together. This time it was heartburn 5 to 6 time a day none of a night and when the cough started it was a dry bark, changed from a dry one to heaps of mucus and started having small amount of blood in. I've had a lung function test and been told mild COPD. 79% function. Not sleeping properly and getting stressed and depressed . I have not felt well for a while before this with intermittent aches and pains and little abdominal twinges. My minds not working all like brain fog and I thought maybe Fibromyalgia. Anyhow after having a Colonoscopy for rectal bleeding they found no CD they found Diverticular. I was supposed to be referred to a GI because I haven't seen one and been on no treatment for a lot of years. I saw the GI before this happened. He put me on Imuran did a Abdominal CT and I saw him again Thursday. I am very upset crying and he then tells me only Divericular on that. My records from my appendectomy of CD Dx were lost years ago during moving around etc. Anyhow he told me I have to much going on to be just CD and and now having COPD added as well and me asking about maybe fibro he said maybe age related (Getting old).
He told me he thought I might have mental illness I said Depression he said mental illness every time I corrected him twice, no he says a unaddressed mental illness and that my brain is making me sick and that I should see a psycho. He had the top of my back and shoulders x rayed. He brought his hand pain into the conversation how no one can find whats wrong with his pain. He says they can cut a person open and find nothing. He says he don't know whether to leave me on the Imuran or not because its not working. I said you told me it could take 2 to 3 months to kick in and I haven't been on it for 2 yet. He said take two of the 40mg Nexium. Then says well stay on the Imuran if you want ( now I'm starting to think he thinks I'm a pill pusher as well). He says he could scan my hole body if I wanted and maybe still find nothing. Then he mumbles something about Gastrointerolist and says he will refer me to Brisbane where the experts on Crohn's are and he referred me to a head shink that I don't want. He said the old hospital may still have records from the 1970's when first Diagnosed. I felt like a pill pushing Hypocondiac. I left the doctor, him seeing I'm deppressed on nothing for it just been told I'm mentally ill absolutley balling my eyes out and drove 2 hours home. I don't think he is a GI and when I see my GP next week I'll be asking her. The first visit I had with him he gave me a thing about Mindfulness (from Buddha's Little Instruction Book).
Any brain fog, I remember the hospital that the dx was done was demolished. I made a phone call to another hospital in that city and they now where the old records are, now I wait nearly another week to see if mine are still there. So I can proved I'm not a hypocondriac. Another reason I doubt him being a GI was before I went my GP looking after the reflux said let me know if they do an endoscopy if not she would order one from the local hospital. The biopsy I had that showed Divurticular was in August 09 and suggested I be referred to a GI for Chrohns treatment. Its taken 12 months to see this jerk because they did nothing about booking an appointment. I was having more rectal bleeding and my GP organized the appointment. Anyhow I don't make sense now when I talk some of the words are coming out stupid like saying ice cream when I mean to say jelly. So I hope you can understand this lot. Oh yeah, I found on the internet Crohns can make a return in the 50 to 70 year age and that with the elderly there is an association between diverticular disease, Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis. But what would I know , I'm mentally ill. Thanks all hope you are doing well.

Hey Cheryl,

Sorry to hear you are going through all this! Whether this guy is a GI or not I personally think you need to get yourself to Brisbane and sorted with a decent GI particularly with the co morbidities you have going on. Certainly the latter age group you mention is another peak time for the diagnosis of Crohns.

I hope you get on top of things soon and please keep us posted on how you are doing and what you decide.

Take care, :)
Dusty
