So I've not really got stomach ache before and my only symptom is my fissure/ulcer, then today I started my 6 week course of metronidazole 3x 400mg for 2 weeks then 2x 400mg for 4 weeks, and NOW I have stomach ache. I know it can make you feel a bit sick and give you weird bm's, but no my tummy is just sore :( or perhaps the subway I ate at lunch was dodgy.

Aaaah the irony.

I am sorry your tummy hurts, Hannah. I sure hope it will pass soon for you.

Hang in there!

Hiya Hannah

yeah metronidazole can upset your stomach, but give it time, the benefits of this med far outweigh the side effects.
It saved my life last year when I turned septic.
Seek medical attention if you have difficulty breathing or any swelling of the lips, tongue etc.
And DO NOT drink alcohol with it.

Fanx guys :) so glad you had smart doctors with good drugs astra, sounds like you had a close call, and really glad youre much healthier now.

I think I just have indigestion, but you know when you get a new drug and you read the side effects and you start thinking you have ALL of them. Lol perhaps I should lighten up.

Funnily enough I have a feeling I've taken metronidazole before. When I was travelling in Africa I got ill a couple of times and every time I went to the hospital, along with my regular prescription, I was given these little yellow antibiotics, which I had to take three times a day, and I was told they could make me feel a bit sick, and when I asked what they were for, I was told my stomach. Every patient was given these little yellow pills. I swear it was metronidazole, because I remember thinking it had a weird name I hadn't heard of before.

Does anyone know why this might be? I know they're pretty strong antibiotics and they work in the digestive system, but they have other uses too like post-surgical wound protection (the only one I can think of atm). Was really weird though, weird little Africa tablets and now I'm on them for 6 weeks :)

I've also been told that along with tummy troubles, metronidazole can cause nerve damage if used for a long time, and my consultant said if I experience any tingling in my fingers I should stop taking it, although he was pretty relaxed telling me this. Has anyone heard of this or experienced this before?

Cheers guys, much love!

Ps I know not to drink alcohol and I definitely won't drink any at all BUT, what happens if you do drink it?? I'm intrigued because people keep saying DONT DRINK ALCOHOL and I just really want to know what happens if you do!

Hey Hannah,

It causes severe nausea and vomiting, flushing, fast heartbeat (tachycardia), and shortness of breath.

Stomach ache is also a pretty common side effect as well. Matt was on 400mg three times a day for 3months pre op and did experience the nausea and loss of appetite effects as well as the occasional stomach ache. I don't know if I could put it all down the Flagyl or not because he had other issues as well and was on another antibiotic. Post op he is on 200mg three times a day for 3 months and hasn't had any problems with side effects thus far.

Dusty. :)

Most antibiotics are fine if you drink a little. But metronidazol can make you feel very ill if you have any alcohol.

Cheers guys, its so great to have a place where you can have your questions answered by such knowledgeable and experienced people :)

I'm not a big drinker anyway post-uni, so I'm not going to touch a drop whilst taking the antibiotics, I was just really curious. My Consultant made me laugh, when he mentioned the no drinking thing, he said you can always stop taking it for a couple of days if your planning on a big 'session,' I was like nah you're alright I'll resist! haha

Oh yeah, they do recommend you continue to avoid alcohol for about 3 days after you finish your course of Flagyl.
