stomach flu and crohn's

wondering if anyone's child with Crohn's has had the stomach flu? If so does it seem to bring on a Crohn's flare? Tanner has been doing great, best he has felt in 6 yrs. Last Thursday he came down with the stomach flu, while those symptoms are better now he has some stomach pain off and on and going to the bathroom alot again with watery diarrhea and his appetite isn't that great. So worried that this has stirred his crohn's up :(

Claire and her "healthy" brother had it a couple of years ago. It seemed to take a few days longer for all her functions (including BMs) to return to normal but they did. GI had to talk me off the ledge at the time because I was convinced she was going into a flare. She wasn't and I hope Tanner isn't either!!! As Dusty often says, it's impossible for them to just "be sick".

Keep us posted!

thanks for replying. I am praying that is just taking longer for things to go back to normal but as of this a.m. he is still having watery stools, little appetite and stomach pain off and on. I haven't called his doc yet, we go to see him on Monday. Worry, does it ever end?

i manged to get a stomach flu and not aggravate my crohn's. I did have a slightly amusing visit with my GI, where be both agreed he might be over kill and useless for a stomach flu but was glad i choose to go to him anyway.

I know there is some funky stomach flu going around here that hangs on for a week or two with D and sometimes vomiting. Several of my friends kids have had it and talked to their peditrician about it and that seems to be the course this virus is taking. Hopefully that is all it is!!

Hey Marsha, big knock on wood here, but EJ has not had any stomach problems since beginning his crohns treatments. I hope Tanner's starting to return to normal! I wish you both the best!

Sarah has gastroenteritist but it has not caused her to flare. As J said with her Claire, it probably hit her a little harder than others without CD but things returned to normal for her.

I hope things settle for Tanner hun......let us know how he gets on.

I was at my GI yesterday and over heard them say there was a stomach bug, i think i heard Shigella but i am not sure and they weren't sure either.

Kyle, our 12YO son with Crohn's just got the stomach flu after it went thru the rest of the family about two weeks ago. He has been on Humira for about 10-12 weeks and we were just weaning him off prednisone after his flare in June/July - he was down to 5mg every other day.

Well, either the stomach flu, or the prednisone weaning, or both sent him into a flare. He went downhill quickly over a week, but after bumping the prednisone back up seemed to be getting better. Then the past 2-3 days went downhill again. Just admitted to the hospital this afternoon to try to get an idea what is going on (endoscopy, colonoscopy, and video capsule tomorrow), and hopefully get some IV meds since they suspect he is not absorbing what they have him on.

Don't want to worry you, but keep your eyes wide open for the possibility, and be extra extra careful to avoid dehydration.

Best of luck and prayers to you!

Steve

hope your son is feeling better Steve. Tanner seems fine now, guess it just lasts a little longer when you have Crohns. Praying for Kyle!

So fab to hear all has settled for Tanner...YAY!

@Steve, I'm so sorry to hear that Kyle is in hospital :( . When you get the chance let us know how you are both getting on.

Sending loads of love, hugs and luck your way...:goodluck:

Glad to hear Tanner is doing better!

Thanks for the good wishes for Kyle. So as not to further hijack, I will update his condition on his "your story" page!

Thanks,
Steve
