stoner road

hi,

i'm 21 years old and i'm an undergraduate student majoring in bio-medical science and psychology. the second semester of my college career is when colitis began to rule my life. during that time i was hospitalized for the first time for 15 days. i'm allergic to mesalamine and remicade so i am currently on humira. even on a strict diet and being on humira i have server flares regularly which is really hard when you have class all day everyday. often miss class which causes me more stress on top of the other stresses of my life. as a result of this i did some research and discussed with my doctor about using marijuana to alleviate my symptoms. i've been smoking it mostly but i would like to begin to cook with it. medical marijuana is literally my only option, in the words of my doctor.(ie. i do not live in a state where medical marijuana is legal). recently i've been drinking raw milk in hopes that it will help in the repair of my lining. i practice yoga about 3-4 times a week. recently ive been trying to step it up a bit but ive been in so much pain that its nearly impossible to keep up with anything that involves physical movement.

i would appreciate any advice on how to manage this.

Welcome to the forum wintas!

I know it is hard to manage school with IBD so it is good to see you are taking action to try and manage it all.

There is plenty of information to read through on this site, so feel free to browse through the forums or Search for specific topics. Feel free to create your own threads also.

Hi Wintas

Welcome to the forum!

It seems that you're being really proactive around your health---I've not been able to do yoga for ages. Check out the 'Diet and Fitness' section of the forum---there might be some ideas there, or you could post your question there.

Since your state doesn't allow for medical marijuana, has your doctor suggested Marinol? I realize it may not be an idea situation---some people feel that smoking or having pot in foods works better with pain receptors than Marinol does.

I hope you find some answers on the forum so that you're able to return to school in way less pain.

Cheers,

Kismet

Hi Wintas and welcome!

Sorry that you are having trouble managing your flares with the Humira. Have you discussed other medical options with your doc - Azathiprone, 6MP, Methotrexate? Are any of those options for you? Can you take pred to calm things down in the meantime?

I am not at all against medical marijuana and know it can be very helpful for many IBD patients. But unless you have discussed other treatments with your doc and you didn't list them in your post, I am curious/confused as to why he said MM is your only option.

Good luck finding something that works and I hope you can start to feel better soon.

Hi Wintas and welcome! I'm also curious why MMJ is your only option?

And what sort of yoga are you practicing, do you know?

Again, welcome, I hope to see you around :)

*hugs*

I've read a lot of things about Medical Marijuana, and it seems like it does a lot to help people with IBD

it definitely was one of the only things that helped with the nausea and pain when I didn't know why I was sick, and before I got diagnosed.

but I do live in Oregon, where medical marijuana is available and encouraged...

But I am curious, why is it your only option? Is your medication not working?

Sorry you can't be on the Remicade. It's what I plan to go on after my ileostomy reversal.

My doctor seemed to prefer it over the Humira when we were deciding which route to go. I'm also in school, which was one of the reasons I chose it as well. You don't have to think or worry about it except every two months!

I just got diagnosed though, so I'm not sure if there are any other options besides Humira or Remicade...did you ask your doctor?

My older sister is on Humira, and doesn't seem to do much for her...

Also...isn't THC available in pill form?

I'm not sure about the legal issues, but I'm pretty sure your doctor can prescribe it. Although that might fall under medical marijuana privileges as well. Worth looking into, though...
