Hi. I was diagnosed with Crohns in Jan 05. I did pretty well until the past 2 years or so. I was hospitalized right before Thanksgiving in 2010 and than right before Christmas in 2011. Those were the first times. I had a very odd experience in June of 2012 that put me in ER, and than spiked a 104 fever and than went back to ER 10 hrs later and they gave me some antibiotics, prednisone, and a GI cocktail. Immediately after taking the cocktail my right ear went numb and deaf. My hearing never came back. They say it is SSHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss). It was horrible, gave me Vertigo for weeks and everything. Craziest thing....But my questions are:

Has anyone noticed that maybe the stress of the Holidays cause flares and if so if maybe anxiety meds could help? (I dont really like taking a lot of medicine but if it keeps me outta the ER it may be worth it)

Has anyone ever experienced hearing loss bc of a Crohns flare, or while being administered a GI Cocktail?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi gizmo, welcome.
I'm sry for your hearing problems. There could potentially be more " flares" during the holiday season b/c of the added subconscious stress we put ourselves threw. Not by choice, mind you. It's very odd it would come from a gi cocktail, that includes benadryl®, maalox®, lidocaine and carafate. You could potentially get it if you were allergic to one of the compounded components. Hope you get feeling better and whether the holidays well. Good luck to you. - hugs-

Hi, Gizmo!

I haven't actually noticed my own flares coinciding with holiday stress, but stress is a big factor for a lot of us. I can absolutely see how the holiday season might make you flare. I'm sure anxiety meds would help, but I don't know for certain that they would prescribe them for you based on that alone. I'd definitely talk to someone about it, though. Most of them you can take on an as-needed basis; doing it that way might help you feel a little better about the added medication.

I have no idea about hearing loss; I've never experienced anything like that. I hope you find answers soon!

They put me on Hyocystine or generic Belladonna and I can't really say I had a hearing loss, but when I would lay down the whole room would spin and I became very dizzy, like vertigo. I quit taking it immediately and decided to take something else if it ever gets that bad again. I am on Lorazepam for stress as needed. I take one at night because it helps me sleep too. I don't take them in the day except when I know I will be facing stress, they do make you tired though. Hope this helps you!

Thanks everyone!!

Yes, I do need help sleeping sometimes too, LOL. My mind just goes and goes. I am constantly thinking about finances, work, the wedding coming up, getting in shape...........you name it, and it comes into my head about 10pm every night.

It's very frustrating. Sometimes I wish I had a switch to turn my mind on and off. And my fiance says I worry too much about little things and get too worked up sometimes. Not sure if thats just ME, or the fact that I am a female. ;)

I was on Pentasa when I was first diagnosed, but than had to go on Imuran (Azathioprine) a few years ago. When I went to ER last December, they said I had an episode of Pancreatitis....Never have I heard that before. I was like great....just another thing to add to my medical chart, lol. Luckily I haven't had any other episodes of that, so hopefully it was just the one.

I think anxiety meds as needed is probably a good compromise for me. I take pain meds only as needed too. I used to take Tramadel but it made me SO sick feeling in the morning. I only EVER have to take pain meds at night time. Very rarely have I taken one during the day. IF I have pain, it's always when I go to bed or in the middle of the night.

Sounds like some anti-anxiety meds are in order for you Gizmo. I hope your Dr. will give them to you soon. They really do help and the tiredness you do get used to after you are on them awhile. I did when I had to take them during the day for awhile. So let us know how things work out! Teresa:heart:
