Hey everyone so I'm relatively new here but I felt like I really need to get this off my chest so I apologize for the wall of text >.<

I'm a 20 year old m, 2 years ago, in the middle of my spring semester of college, I began having trouble with hard stools. I was frequenting the bathroom a lot have these bowel movements with traces of blood. 3 weeks later I went to the doctor and he gave me some laxative and a referral to a gastroenterologist to do a colonoscopy. Upon my first visit there, the gi checked my behind and said I had a fissure, I received topical medication for that and scheduled for a colonoscopy a couple of weeks later. That scope only found internal hemorrhoids so gi chalked up my symptoms to my diet. A couple of weeks after that, I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and had bloody diarrhea with severe stomach pain. Dad took me to the Er but they didn't find anything and said it was probably a stomach virus. Now starting at this point I began having bowel movements 3-5 times per day, it wasn't diarrhea, more normal stoolish, but if I hadn't used the bathroom in a while, it would become hard. Prior to my original bout of constipation, I went once a day.

Fast forward a year and I'm in the Er again, my stool had become so hard, I couldn't have a bowel movement, I could feel it right at my anus but it just wouldn't come out. They gave me an enema and a laxative but it wouldn't come out. I ended up being discharged cuz of a huge snowstorm coming, still having no bowel movement. Upon arriving home I finally had one and resumed the new normal 3-5 times a day routine. Had another visit to my gi and he blamed my diet and told me to increase fiber.

Fast forward a year to June, and I have another anal fissure. Except this time I had a painful bump I could feel when I wiped. It got so painful I could barely sit down. This bump ended up bleeding and disappearing a couple of days later. Went back to my pcp and he looked and said he saw nothing. A couple of days later the bump came back, another couple of days later, it bled, this happened twice more before I went back to pcp while the bump was still formed. He said it was an abscess, potentially a fistula, and prescribed me antibiotics and told me to come back in 2 weeks. 2 days later I went to the ER cuz of the side effects of the Meds were affecting me pretty badly, the nausea and extreme fatigue, I even fell off my bed at one point. The Er Doctor took a look at my behind and said I had an abscess and told me to see a gi ASAP and that I might have Crohn's. They did a blood test and said I was ok and I was sent home. The day after I went to the Er, I had 3 bowel movements that had normal stool formation but we're completely red. I had to go to another gi cuz my normal one wouldn't see me till 2 weeks later. This new gi said I could have Crohn's as well and immediately referred me to a surgeon at another hospital who drained it. The surgeon said it could probably end up becoming a fistula, I've had 3 follow ups since then with him and he's said that it really is likely a fistula is forming.

I ended up seeing a new gi last Monday, the partner of my original one. He listened to all my symptoms and said I could have Crohn's too, the only problem was my clear scope from 2 years ago. He ordered a blood test, an Mri of my pelvic region, a calprotectin test, and another colonoscopy on this Thursday. 2 days later, he called me and said that everything on my blood test was perfect, I had no anemia or anything, except there was a part that confirmed inflammation in my bowels and was indicative of Crohn's. I gave my stool to the lab last Thursday for the calprotectin test so no results from that yet and I had the mri yesterday, gi will receive results tomorrow. I have bowel prep tomorrow and the scope early Thursday morning.

I have felt heavily stressed and scared throughout this entire period. I have a fear of public bathrooms as well so going out is difficult for me. During this past week, my bowel movements have increased to 5-7 per day, 2 days where it was 9 and 11+ respectively. There was normal stools, diarrhea, and hard stools throughout that. The draining abscess occasionally has blood when I wipe after bowel movements for the past week and I panic at the sight of it (surgeon says its a small amount). This morning it was leaking blood after my first bowel movement of the day but it soon stopped and hasn't bled for the 3 other bowel movements I've had so far. Im scared of sitting down and having the abscess bleed. I'm scared of the bowel prep and the colonoscopy worrying that something'll go wrong and I'll die :( I'm just in a really bad place right now. I'm scared of potential surgery for my maybe fistula. I'm scared of the future. I've occasionally had suicidal thoughts but haven't been really serious about that :(

I am sorry for all you are going through. This is a very supportive group here. Come anytime you feel like it. There are many people here who have had surgeries and there are many people who have had fistulas, fissures and abscesses. There is a section in here concerning surgery and one concerning Fistulas, Fissures and Abscesses. Feel free to go into any of these sections. If you want to pm me, feel free.

Ty for responding :) yea it's really frustrating and stressing me out :( I'm really scared, and I'll def check those stuff out

The doctor should be able to see what is going on and help you out. For me, he usually tells me his initial findings. Then, I go to see him in his office in the near future and he tells me everything. Sometimes , they have to take biopsies and won't have the results right away. Sending support. Let us know how you are.

Update: I panicked and called my gi to tell him about the bleeding. He said to go ahead with the bowel prep and he'll see where the bleeding is coming from tomorrow. He said if the bleeding started and didn't stop, to head to the emergency room

He also got back the results from the mri and I definitely have a fistula.

Maybe you should also talk to your doctor about your anxiety. This is all new and scary for you. Keep in mind, that mostly sick people post here, the ones that are feeling better have moved on. With the right combination of medications, you can soon go into remission, and heal your fistula. I haven't had any for the past two years, and I'm feeling really good. A colonoscopy isn't as bad as it sounds. I had my last endoscopy without anesthetic and watched it on the screen. Hang in there, it gets better.

I can do a hot water bath. Although I'm starting to get super emotional, I've already thrown up twice. I really hate this and am starting to get upset

you are in the middle of the hard part == gets easier when prep is done. I never mind the actual colonoscopy as much as I do the prep --- you are halfway there!!!

Good luck tomorrow!!

Update: I'm emotionally feeling a bit better, only passing yellow fluid now. Feeling just a tad dizzy and really tire now

Drank the second half of my bowel prep an hour and a half ago, been on toilet since, and scope in 3 hours

It should start slowing down soon. After my second dose, it took about 2 hours and I didn't have to go much afterward. If you were already seeing yellow liquid before you drank it, you should be sufficiently cleaned out.

I'm back, they didn't find anything, I have to do one more mri to confirm no Crohn's. All loopy from anesthesia now

Glad to hear it went well. When I had the sedative (Propofol), I wanted to sleep all day afterward. After your prep, I'm sure you want to do the same.

Are they doing the MRI to check for small bowel inflammation?

It's common to have some minor stomach discomfort after colonoscopy right?

Yes, it is. They inject your colon with CO2 gas and it can cause discomfort throughout your GI tract. My stomach was tender for about 2 days. Just keep trying to fart it out as it helps. If necessary, take some simethicone as that helped me. If it gets really bad and/or you're worried, call your GI.

I did sleep well :) I've had 2 bowel movements so far and and there was some minor pain in the anus region with those, and stomach discomfort is still there. Aside from that, I'm okay

When I did the prep, it caused me to develop internal hemorrhoids, so I used some Preparation H and it really helped. I also used Cortizone 10 Intensive Healing. A&D really did nothing to get rid of the swelling, but the other 2 did. If you're still having stomach discomfort, you can take some simethicone. With me, the gas that they pumped into my GI tract to open it up creeped up to my stomach, so it was tender for 2 days.

Ohhh I'll try that out and Ahhh my stool seems a bit hard as well :/ I normally use mirilax when this happens but I doubt that's safe so soon after the bowel prep and colonoscopy >.<

Miralax may make you dehydrated, so I wouldn't use it. The nurse warned me that my stools would take a while to get back to normal because of the prep and the scope. Your GI tract has to recover. Just make sure you drink plenty of clear liquids as that will help pull more water into your intestines and make the stool softer.

I'm starting to panic that it'll be like a year ago when it got so hard I had to go to the emergency room :(

I understand your anxiety as I have anxiety disorder myself. I'm doing much better, though, but it used to be really bad when it wasn't controlled with regular medication and behavioral therapy. Have you talked to your GI about your concerns?

So I ended up drinking miralax and had 2 bouts of diahhrea >.< but it's gotten soft today although lower left side of my stomach feels a little bloated and fistula is itching. And I haven't talked to my gi about cuz the office was closed when I was panicking and today as well >.<

I'm planning on visiting my college's counseling center when my semester starts at the end of August cuz I don't want my parents to know

You may be really surprised at how your parents take the act you know you need help with anxiety. Speaking as a parent, I was so happy when my son started seeing a therapist because he got help we were not able to give on our own. I wouldn't discount letting them know you need help. But if that just isn't going to happen, definitely go to the center at school

My mom once said that only crazy people need medication to deal with anxiety and depression :/ hence why I wanna keep it a secret from them

sorry, maybe she will come around with time. I hope you know what she said is NOT true, anxiety and depression are very real problems, and counseling / medications can do a lot to help. It is no more a sign of weakness to have anxiety or depression as it is a sign of weakness to have diabetes or cancer.

I hope she will come around one day >.<

Update: been having stool consistency problems since the day after colonoscopy, cycling between diahhrea, soft, and hard stool and stomach pain in lower left area. Called my gi and he said to use miralax (adjusting the dosage as I saw fit) to make sure no hard stools were irritating fistula

And also, there's been no drainage from where my fistula is so idk if that's a good thing o.o I hope another abscess doesn't form, gonna call my surgeon tomorrow to make an appointment to show him my MRI and colonoscopy results

Have my MRI enterography tomorrow as well

So finished up my MRI earlier, doc will get results tomorrow afternoon or the morning the day after. I've been having diahhrea since cuz of that thing I had to drink. The place where my fistula is sorta hurting but there is no visible draining >.<

Also made the appointment with my surgeon for monday

Update: my gi got the results from MRI enterography and they were perfectly normal :/ we're still waiting on the results from the colonoscopy biopsies, but it's looking like I don't have Crohn's and that my fistula is unrelated to my bowel troubles (which still needs diagnosing)

I'm sorry. I know how frustrating it can be to have no answers as I'm in the same predicament. Hopefully, the biopsies will provide some clue as to why you are having symptoms.

Yea, I'm tired of these frequent bowel movements and having to use miralax whenever the stool gets hard every couple of days :(

Update: went to see my surgeon and he said to come back if the area where the fistula is increases in pain, starts draining again (cuz it stopped), or if started swelling. I think he might've poked the wrong area when he was examining with his Q-tip/needle thingy and when I wipe that area, there little black/gray flecks and it hurts a little o_O idk if should worry about that lol

Update: Saw my gi and all my results have come back negative for crohn's except for the first blood test that was indicative of it, so I'm now having another blood test being done to check for celiac disease. in the mean time, I've been prescribed bentyl to take when i feel pain in my stomach.

Also i have my third throat infection for this summer, was feeling nauseous, vomiting, and throat pain, and taking antibiotics for that. Hurts a heck of a lot when i swallow >.< I've also been looking into counseling outside of the what ill get at my college when the semester starts, as my anxiety still persists. Curious about whether or not to go to an inpatient place, but scared of all the horror stories I've read and heard of inpatient psych care >.<

Update: gi called and I've tested for negative for celiac disease as well. So plan is to see how I do with bentyl and if that's not working I go back and he'll prescribe me medicine to slow down my bowel movements

My antibiotics for my pharyngitis is causing to have frequent mushy bowel movements that pass really slowly and now I sorta have pain when I wipe >.<

Don't worry alot please just relax and do what you should in the circumstances you have :3

When i first started getting crohns symptoms it was mere fistulas, I took looooooong warm/hot baths, Just a bathtub filled with Warm to hot water

it really made me feel great, try them please :3

Did your GI only test for Celiac through biopsies? Sometimes, biopsies can produce a false negative. There are blood tests that can be done to test for antibodies. Also, you could have non-Celiac gluten sensitivity which would produce a negative result for Celiac disease, but still produce many of the same symptoms. Once all the tests are done, if you are interested to see if eliminating gluten would help, I would try a gluten-free diet for at least a month to see if your symptoms disappear or are lessened. That's what I had to do because I didn't have health insurance so I could not afford expensive tests. I have learned that I am EXTREMELY sensitive to gluten - so much so that even the slightest bit triggers a reaction.

He did a blood test for the celiac as well that came back negative and Ahhh I'll def check that out

I've also developed some dull pain in my groin area so now I'm worried that it might be a hernia >.<

My bowel movement have changed and today and yesterday I had frequent bowel movements but normal consistency throughout the day until evening came. Then I had 2-3 loose stools and extreme fatigue. Idk if the antibiotics are causing it, I'm taking augmentin

Augmentin rips me up! Always gives me D. I've had doctor's start to prescribe it and then say, no, you don't want that if you have Crohns. Have you been alternating the antibiotics with probiotics? That helps me with other antibiotics.

feel better!

Finished up the antibiotics 2 days but I developed loose bowel movements last night that's lasted till today, there's yellow stringy stuff in it, idk what that is. Last bowel movement has small solid pieces and then mushy stool following it. Been having that pain in my groin still, had an ultrasound yesterday for that. Doc'll get results tomorrow for that. Having some pain in the upper thigh area now as well.

Tomorrow is my first day of the semester at college, gonna be on campus from 8-5:45, feeling extremely anxious cuz I'm most comfortable using the bathroom in my own house and don't like using the bathroom at public places. Also been having some fistula pain so afraid of that. My anxiety has gotten to the point where I feel like crying

Well I had fistula surgery twice before it actually went away... the second one they actually just removed the infected area from the inside.. can't recall what it was called but was very painful I was bed rest for 3 months and out of work for 6 but took a year to heal up completely.. had this weird rubber band hanging out of my behind that needed to be tightened every 2 weeks.. I wouldn't put that surgery on my worse enemy it was so painful.. but anyways not trying to stress you more and I hope all is well with you.. everything is gonna be alright as long as you keep trying and stay positive drs are there too help

Fistula hurting a little during my first 2 bowel movements, leaving home soon. I feel really scared

The earlier the better you get that fistula removed I waited 6 years before having mine done which made it so much harder to get rid of if it's a fistula get it taken care of now rather then later oh and also get your stomach checked for gastroparesis it's a simple test you eat a sandwich and lay on a bed for 90 mins that's it.. that can effect your entire bowel system

Update: I managed to survive today but have realized that my college has bad quality toilet paper >.< the fistula has been hurting a bit throughout the day so I'm really scared it'll start bleeding >.< I'm gonna make an appointment with surgeon soon. Now I feel super fatigued. I don't know why I get so fatigued so easily :( Ugh I really hate all this. I know about the surgery but it really scares me. I don't handle pain very well. It stresses me out a lot

Are you on iron or b12?

No, the last couple of blood tests I had say everything regarding that was normal, although I had another blood test taken when I went to doctor about groin pain so I should get those results soon

I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow morning about the fistula

I've been have loose bowel movements the last couple of days, but today the bowel movements got a little painful and the stool has changed into a kind of soft, mushy that takes a while to pass and seems sticky. Ugh I hate this and this fatigue won't go away

Scheduled fistulatomy for sometime before thanksgiving.

This fatigue is still bothering me, I wonder if I've been over hydrating

Went to gp and he thinks anxiety is causing everything. Prescribed me propranolol 10 mg, haven't used it

And my stool is hard all over again. I drank a half dose of miralax

I had a bowel movement this morning that was near completely black, but when I wiped it was a normal brown. I assume if it was blood that when I wiped it would be black also? And I had a lot of prunes yesterday and the day before so idk if that caused it
