I never eat sugary things, at most a little sugar in my tea until this week. But I have been eating lots of muffins, candy like full of sugar foods for five days and I realised my crohn's symptoms are worsening, especially the blood in stool is getting worse. Can it be related bacterial overgrowth by sugar intake? I stopped eating sugary foods yesterday and waiting for a change.
Thanks for replies.

Refined sugar is known for causing inflammation within the body. I recently reduced my sugar intake as I noticed it was slowing me down and aggravating my digestive system.

How does our diet cause inflammation? One way is our excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates. Sugar and white flour are deadly poisons that have an inflammatory effect on the body. Unaware of this, the average American consumes more than 160 pounds of sugar and 200 pounds of white flour per year. Sugar and white flour increase blood sugar, and even a modest increase in blood sugar generates pro-inflammatory chemicals. Most people eat these poisons daily in the form of bread, pasta, breakfast cereal, cookies, cakes, soft drinks, candy, etc.

In addition, sugar and white flour cause inflammation and disease by forming AGEs.

AGEs are produced when a protein reacts with sugar, resulting in damaged, cross-linked proteins. As the body tries to protect you by breaking these AGEs apart, immune cells secrete large amounts of inflammatory chemicals. Many of the diseases that we think of as part of aging are actually caused by this process. Depending on where the AGEs occur, the result can be arthritis, heart disease, cataracts, memory loss, wrinkled skin or diabetes complications, to name a few.

the bad bacteria LOVE disachariddes(lactose/sucrose) and this is part of what the specific carbohydrate diet is all about to help manage ibd symptoms. check out the book on amazon.

I think because our digestive tracts are already in a state of being sick, we cannot handle sugars and lots of other things like normal healthy people can. I know too much sugar does not agree with me either for more reasons than one. I do have some, but very little. I try and stay with the more natural sugars if at all possible.

I find sugary foods to be a good source of energy for me. I can't handle fibre, and anything rich or starchy can be too filling. Sugary foods don't seem to cause me any problems.

You really just have to try giving it up (or minimising it) and see if you get consistent improvements.

However, if you're getting an increase in bleeding, you might need to check with a doctor that your disease doesn't require a change in medication, and have your iron levels checked as excessive blood loss can cause anaemia. I would think doing this would be more important than changing your diet, though of course you can try that at the same time if you can cut out sugar without restricting your diet too much.
