Hey,

Thanks for all your help and advice so far. Went to drs today as I've pretty much finished my antibiotics, which didn't help. He's now put me on sulfasalazine to see if that helps, has anyone been on it and did it help? In what way? I think it's called Azulfidine in the US.

He said I had some fullness in the large bowel and my right side is quite tender, is this common?

Hope you can answer my questions :) thanks all x

Azulfidine made me pretty sick and its made a lot of people sick because its an older sulfa drug. In my opinion there are better drugs out there (I was put on Asacol instead). There are some people its helped a lot though so hopefully you're one of the lucky ones!

Tenderness on the right side is very common because its likely the ileum that's affected. Fullness in the large bowel could mean anything, not a term I've heard, maybe its gas for all I know which could be from good bacteria overgrowth.

Thanks! I'll give it a try and see if it works first :) hopefully I'll be lucky!

Hopefully it's just gas or something, I guess if the dr was concerned he would have worried more but he seems happy enough I guess.

I was on that for a few years after I was diagnosed with Colitis. It made me sick to my stomach at first when I first started taking it until I got used to the drug. But worked pretty well for me for quite a few years until it stopped working. Then I was put on asacol. Good luck:)

How long does it take for the body to get used to it? Did the nausea take long to go away? I have anti nausea medication but I don't know if that would help?

I'm scared to even start them now haha!

Just make sure you wash your hands after handleing the sulfasalazine. it leaves a chalky residue on your fingers... I think Sulfasalazine is just the generic version of the azulfadine. I had been taking it in the early 90's back when I was first diagnosed with chrons and had the insurance to see my GI DR,

you might notice an orange'ish color in your stool but it is nothing to worry about.

It is a pretty good med I guess, just make sure you drink plenty of water with it.

I'm sorry, I don't exactly remember. But, I do know that it took a few days to start kicking in. It wouldn't hurt to start taking the anti nausea stuff. I wasn't given any when I was diagnosed in '96 and wish I would have. At the time I had just moved into the dorms at college so it was pretty embarrassing too. Hope things are more comfortable for you than it was at that time for me. Take care.
