surgery and remicade

Strong possibility I have to have surgery last part of July. On my neck this time, not CD related...well it actually probably is due to it being mainly arthritis stuff.

My question is this...does the remicade affect any part of my surgery? healing process? etc? Have any of you run into this?

I sure hate to go off of it if I don't need to.

I don't know for sure, but for my surgery I had to go off the meds for a few moths prior and about a month after, but it wasn't too long, and it wasn't enough time to make too big a difference. Good luck with your surgery!

That's a hard one. Remicade kind of tricks the immune system. I don't think it would make a difference if you're on it and have surgery. It shouldn't mess up the healing process at all, the only thing it could do is increase your risk of infection (because of the tricking your immune system thing).

Also, when I had surgery for my ileostomy, I was taking prednisone at the time and that was okay. I know pred does slow down the healing process because it is a steroid but remicade doesn't because it isn't a steroid.

I don't see why you would have to get off it because even if it does increase your risk of infection there's antibiotics to take care of that. Good luck hopefully you don't have to get the surgery!
