My boyfriend has Crohn's, he's had it for 13 years without ever needing a surgery. We went to the ER last night after his symptoms became unbearable and lo and behold, he has a full obstruction. He has the tube in his nose and is getting surgery early this morning, for those of you that have gone through this, what is the procedure like? How long does it take? What is recovery like? He's only 22 but very thin (6ft, 130lbs) so I'm scared out of my mind. Doesn't help that the hospital won't let anyone stay with him other than visiting hours. We're both just very nervous and would appreciate input from those who unfortunately have experience.

Hi there, so sorry your bf is going through my worst nightmare. I didnt have emergency surgery but my second one was sort of because of an obstructions whilst in the hospital waiting for elective surgery.

My first one was laproscopic, not sure if they are able to do that with emergency ones. Yes it is gonna hurt but they will give him drugs to keep him out of pain, some give epidurals, which I would vote for. Most likely he will remain in the hospital for a week to be given antibiotics to also kill all bacteria and inflammation. Most likely he maybe on prednisone too, that will help him gain weight. He has to go it slow and watch his diet for a spell, it takes about 6 weeks if he behaves and does as he is told. He will be fine, try not to worry. His worst pain is over and having the tube down his nose stops him from vomiting. I never had that, I always refuse. Good luck and sorry his in on xmas day. He will get better :hang: and hugs to you both.

I just had surgery 2 weeks ago on an obstuction and a pill camera inside of me for over 2 months. I am just starting to feel better with out the pain. He cannot do any lifting or bending. he needs a lot of assistance and help for the next couple of weeks. Its going to be hard but he will get through it. Good Luck I wish him well

Mine was the full monte. Emergency, and it had perforated. I hope his isn't that far gone. It is difficult, and recovery for me was slow, but it beats the alternative all to pieces. He will be out of it for a while and will need help when he goes home. I had one of those bedside commodes and wore adult diapers for a while.

My legs swelled up horribly, but that doesn't happen to everyone, I understand.

It is probably over by now. Hang in there. He isn't hurting, he'll be hanging out in morphine heaven for a while. ;)
