So i have a fistula between small and large intestine. Im probably going to need surgery to fix things. My question is, how is life after surgery? Are there a lot of things ill have to worry about or for the most part is it business as usual again?

Stories are appreciated thank yoi

I have never had a fistula, but I have had enough surgeries to last a life time.
With any surgery, you need to allow yourself the time to heal properly. Let your body rest. We are more susceptible to infections because we have an autoimmune disease, so take extra caution when you are handling the incision. We are also more susceptible to getting hernias because it takes longer to heal, so use caution when lifting anything or bending. The smaller your incision is, the less likely you are to get a hernia, but it really can happen with any size incision.
I hope that when the time comes your surgery will go smoothly and you will be able to heal properly and move on with your life. Let me know if you have any questions!

I,be had a lot of surgery all orthopaedic none crohns related, listen to your body if it hurts stop, when the wound has healed massage with bio-oil it reduces scarring and helps keep the wound supple.that came from a surgeon by the way.good luck all the best

Hi. I've had lots of crohns related surgery. Give yourself time to heal. One of the biggest shockers to me was how quickly I'd loose all my energy. Example: Recovery time of 8 weeks. I thought at 8 weeks I could do whatever I wanted. This wasn't the case for me. I'd still get winded pretty easy. Full-time work was more like 12 weeks down the road. (depending on the type of work you do).

Take it a day at a time. Hope all goes well.

Hello there. I had surgery for an intestinal fistula - mine was bowel to bladder. I'm not sure what symptoms you have with yours. I had a lot of pain from an abscess associated with the fistula and horrible bladder problems. I spent a year on a lot of meds but the fistula wouldn't stay healed. I could tell within a few days of having the surgery that things were going to be a whole lot better, and two years on, I am still revelling in how well I feel.
I hope you have the same success with yours and will keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
