I have some good news today. My grandmother, who has pretty bad dementia, is finally being moved into a nursing home. It all worked out perfectly - there's one nursing home in her city that is highly rated. It turns out that my grandfather used to be on the board of this nursing home, so we have connections there. My grandmother has a lot of friends and some relatives who already live in this nursing home, so she won't be lonely. This nursing home has a memory unit, meaning they have trained staff to specifically deal with dementia and Alzheimer's patients. And, although there is normally an 8 month waiting list to get in, they did have one spot open, and it just happens to be in the memory unit which is what my grandma really needs! We of course jumped at the chance to reserve that open spot (I think my grandfather's connections helped, I think my grandmother got to cut the line so to speak).
So, my grandmother is being moved in to the memory unit on Thursday. She really needs a lot more care than my family and I can give her, so this is wonderful that she'll finally have some truly proper care and be in a good environment. She's also been really lonely since my grandfather died last month, so it's great that she'll be in a place where she already has a lot of friends. I'm just so happy that she'll be looked after and I won't have to worry about what she's doing or how lonely she is. Even just basic functional things, like she can no longer shower on her own and she frequently forgets to eat, so now in the nursing home she'll have help with things like bathing, cleaning, and they provide all meals for her. This is such a good thing!
