The Good News thread

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

This thread has gone a bit quiet! But I have some good news to share. My hubby has been working a full-time temp job. It's a good job but it's only temporary and is ending at the end of this month. I was afraid that he wouldn't be able to find another job quickly, but it turns out he's already got a new job lined up! :D That's great news. His friend is managing a new fancy restaurant, and hubby has cooking experience, so he's been hired as a chef in the restaurant. He gets to work with is friend, it sounds like the pay will be decent, and hopefully he can bring me home some yummy food sometimes. I'm very happy!

It must be great being married to a man who cooks, but does he make an awful mess and use every pot and pan in the kitchen ? Great news about his job too.
My good news.....Had my annual check up with my GP yesterday:
BP. good 120/62
weight down by 7 kilos
Most importantly.have managed to get my "borderline"diabetes down to normal.
So docs very happy with me.Now though I have to try to keep it that way.

September will be thirty years of marriage. Yeah. My wife says first time I cooked I used every pot and pan.[emoji1]

My flare is getting back under control! I'll take that for good news. Now if I can get my blood glucose back under control.

Yes, but to be fair, I employ the same method when I cook - I am seriously messy in the kitchen. :p So I can't be too mad about that.

It's funny, he hasn't worked as a cook in almost 20 years - he was a cook when he was in the army (in the mid/late 90's). We started dating just after he got out of the army. He was used to cooking for several hundred people when he was in the army, so in the early days of our dating, he'd cook massive amounts of food because that was just how he was used to cooking! :p We had a LOT of leftovers! He eventually got out of that mindset, thank goodness. But I did have to remind him a few times that we're just two people, not two hundred. Ha ha.

Sure he wasn't just a Jewish mother? ;)

I come from a long line of Jewish mothers, grandmothers and aunts, who would routinely make enough food to feed 10x the number of people who were coming over.

"Well, god forbid someone might go a little hungry. Here Bubala, you need a third piece of pie, you're so skinny!" :D

I got a new phone earlier this week. I got found out how to put how to put a picture of my son and his girlfriend on my screen. I love seeing that every time I turn on TV.

Nope, we're not Jewish. My grandmother is German, and up until she developed dementia, she was the same way. She'd cook tons of food for the family and made sure that we'd all eat until we were completely stuffed. Then as we were heading home (with piles of leftovers in tow), she'd insist that we also take sandwiches and sodas for the road "in case you get hungry" (nevermind the fact that it's less than an hour drive and there was literally no chance that we'd be even slightly hungry). And if a family member couldn't make it that day, she'd send along $20 for them "so that they can get a nice meal too!" So yeah, apparently that's a German grandmother thing as well or at least it is/was with my grandmother.

I think it is a grandmother thing to do. of any ethnic group. I often say, you don't have to be Jewish to be a Jewish mother. :D

Yeah, or at least it is a grandmother thing to do up until your grandmother develops dementia/alzheimer's. My grandma has been declining mentally for awhile and it seems like it's most likely alzheimer's. She's gotten so bad lately that she often forgets to eat, so there's no way she could possibly cook a large meal for the family at this point as it's a challenge now to even cook for just herself and my grandpa. Alzheimer's sucks.

Crap, this is the good news thread so I better share some good news now. Umm... okay, my cousin is going to have a baby soon! It's probably going to be the only baby in the family for quite some time at least (probably until or if that same cousin has another kid), as I'm not going to have kids, my brother doesn't even date so I highly doubt he'll have kids, and my other cousin is also apparently not looking to have kids. So, this baby is going to be super spoiled by all of us when we visit him. The baby is due in about a month and I know that it's going to be a boy, and since my cousin and her husband are both attractive and blonde, it's going to be a super cute blonde baby boy. I'm going to the baby shower tomorrow. My pregnant cousin loves pink flamingos, so I got a sewing pattern and sewed a stuffed toy flamingo for the baby. But, I made it blue instead of pink since it's for a boy. :) It's seriously cute.

Hey glad to read all the good news here.☺
Heres hoping for plenty more of it to..
My 1st grandchild is due in around 3 weeks n i cant wait.. 😆
Love n best wishes to all 💕💕

My good news. My flare is now going away! Budesonide is doing its job.

Also, went fishing over the weekend. That is always good news. Catching fish makes it great news. But we did not catch fish, they were safe.

That is fantastic, Doug.

Talked to my sister today and my dad is not talking about off the wall stuff like before.😀. That can be attributed to his new meds.

Just got a phone call from a company that monitors my credit card. Someone in New York tried to use my card but were unsuccessful which I am glad for.

I have some good news today. My grandmother, who has pretty bad dementia, is finally being moved into a nursing home. It all worked out perfectly - there's one nursing home in her city that is highly rated. It turns out that my grandfather used to be on the board of this nursing home, so we have connections there. My grandmother has a lot of friends and some relatives who already live in this nursing home, so she won't be lonely. This nursing home has a memory unit, meaning they have trained staff to specifically deal with dementia and Alzheimer's patients. And, although there is normally an 8 month waiting list to get in, they did have one spot open, and it just happens to be in the memory unit which is what my grandma really needs! We of course jumped at the chance to reserve that open spot (I think my grandfather's connections helped, I think my grandmother got to cut the line so to speak).

So, my grandmother is being moved in to the memory unit on Thursday. She really needs a lot more care than my family and I can give her, so this is wonderful that she'll finally have some truly proper care and be in a good environment. She's also been really lonely since my grandfather died last month, so it's great that she'll be in a place where she already has a lot of friends. I'm just so happy that she'll be looked after and I won't have to worry about what she's doing or how lonely she is. Even just basic functional things, like she can no longer shower on her own and she frequently forgets to eat, so now in the nursing home she'll have help with things like bathing, cleaning, and they provide all meals for her. This is such a good thing! :)

That's very good news for your Grandmother, and even better news for you and the family. It's lovely that you have her best interests at heart, and also she'll be in a place that you know she'll be cared for,and have friends around her.

Aw great thats really lucky the space was there. It probably did help having the connection. Im so pleased for you Cat. 😆😆xx

Also i have good news my 1st born grandson (31st may)came home from hospital today after a week with an infection. 😆😆. He is doing really well now thank the lord. Been a worring time. Now we can enjoy him properly 😆
Love to all n best wishes 💕💕💕

Glad to hear, Mandy! I bet that was scary for sure but it's great that he's well and home now. Give him lots of kisses and cuddles for us and spoil him rotten! ;) My cousin is about to give birth any day now and that's going to be the only baby in our family probably for quite some time (I'm not interested in having kids, and my brother and other cousin are not in relationships right now so I doubt either of them will have kids anytime soon, if ever). So we're going to spoil my cousin's little baby when he arrives, too! :)

And yes, I'm really happy about where my grandmother is going to be living. She's been so lonely and adrift since my grandfather died - she was his caretaker and she'd drive him to dialysis and things like that, and now I think she's lost a sense of purpose as well as her life partner. She calls me and leaves me really sad voicemails saying things like, "You can call me anytime, you can stop over anytime, just come by and visit me whenever, I'm just here all alone by myself all day every day." I think things will be vastly improved once she gets settled in to the nursing home. She'll still be grieving for my grandfather, of course, but she'll have a lot more support and help and friends around her rather than being all alone and without any help for her dementia.

My son came over after work today. It was the highlight of my day. He came and talked. He doesn't do that all the time.

My grandma is officially moved into the nursing home. My dad said the process was pretty awful (I didn't go along but apparently my grandma was super mad and upset), but, my uncle went over there a bit later in the day yesterday to bring her some more items, and apparently at that time she was happily chatting with someone in one of the common rooms and didn't seem upset at all. So hopefully she adjusts well and quickly to her new residence. The staff told us to wait at least a week before we visit, so I'm hoping to go visit her not this weekend but next.

Also, my cousin had her baby a day ahead of schedule (she was supposed to be induced today but the baby decided to get a jump on things yesterday!). He seems happy and healthy, both mom and baby are doing great. And I'm so happy for my cousin, she had something like 4 or 5 miscarriages before she was able to have this baby, so I know she dearly wanted this baby! He's definitely a great addition to the family, we're all so happy he's here.

Hi Cat n Ron . Thanks for your kind words. Oh ye he will be spoilt with love for sure. Not materialisticly as i dont believe in to much of that. Tho baby things are hard to resist lol ☺

So happy for you Cat that your grandma is all settled hope she does well and is happy. 💕💕💕💕
Ron aw that was nice for you to chat n see your son. Hope you had a good time together 💕💕

Baby things ARE hard to resist! I had a hard time limiting myself to giving just one gift for my cousin's baby shower. Although, I do like to make handmade gifts, so I decided to go with that. My cousin loves pink flamingos, and since I knew she was having a boy, I found a sewing pattern for a stuffed toy flamingo, and I made it teal blue instead of pink. It turned out really cute, I made it out of soft fleece so it's really cuddly. My cousin loved it so much she jokingly said she might steal it for herself. :p Apparently she had been looking for blue flamingos for the nursery but nobody does flamingos in blue, so she was really happy that I made her baby a blue flamingo. :)

Aw that sounds so cute Cat..how lovely, your cousin sounds thrilled.Hand made things are so much better i think as alot of effort and thought and most importantly love goes into the making of them.
I bet you couldnt wait for the little guy to arrive. Im sure he will be much loved by you and your family. 💕

I took our dog on a walk. We ran across a yard sale. I know it is an old book now but I have always wanted to read Franklin Graham's autobiography. I found it at the yard sale and picked it up for a dollar.

Ah Ron,I love to do that.I was after a book a good few years ago,Can't remember the title but it was about the potato famine in Ireland and the mass immigration to America .The story followed families before and during the sailing, and on their arrival.Anyway,it came into my line of vision as I passed a charity shop and anyone would think I'd won the lottery......It's sometimes the little things in life that make it worthwhile.
Of course, new life far surpasses old books I know. I'll have to wait a while until the great grandkids start arriving though.

Okay, so this is a small thing, but it made me happy so I thought I'd share. There's a little consignment shop here that I like to shop at. Sometimes they get nicer/pricey things in. If something doesn't sell after 3 months of being in this shop, then it becomes 50% off. I had been eyeballing this really cute trench coat (it's navy blue plaid) literally for 3 months. It was just a bit too pricey for me to get at full price so I had been hoping it'd still be there once the three months had passed, because at half price I could afford it. It just finally went down to half price and I snapped it up! It fits me so well, I've got a bit of a belly thanks to steroids and I've had to go up a size in clothes, but this coat makes me feel slim and cute. I love a bargain and I love getting new clothes, it just made me happy that I finally was able to get this coat today after admiring it for so long! :) It's currently too hot here to wear it, but I am looking forward to cooler weather and being able to wear it.

Thanks for sharing,it made me smile. We all love a bargain and you really deserved it after waiting so long.If you're anything like me,you'll be taking it out of the closet and admiring it every so often.

Yes, I love bargains! I'm always on the lookout for bargains. Even when I was in Japan, I was on the lookout for bargains. :p There was a mall in Japan with a store selling kimonos for something like $500 US - I wanted a kimono but not for that price! But then I found a few stores selling vintage kimonos, which are gorgeous and high-quality, for anywhere from $5 to $30 US. I definitely snapped up a bunch of those bargain kimonos! They're so pretty, I just love them.

Here's my bit of good news for the day - I get to go visit my grandmother tomorrow. :) I called the nursing home to make sure it'd be okay for me to visit, and they said that my grandma would love a visit and that I can come by anytime. So I've gotten a few small gifts for her and I'm going over there tomorrow to see her. It's been such a hectic time lately, my grandfather died on May 14th and since then there have been visitations and the funeral and burial and then getting my grandmother moved out of her condo and into the nursing home. It'll be nice to finally be able to see her during a more relaxed time. She's been in the nursing home for something like 10 days now so I'm hoping she's all settled in. I did hear that she's got 4 friends already at the nursing home and that she's done some gardening, so that's wonderful! So we can talk about nice things like gardening, rather than sad things like funerals. I'm looking forward to it.

Aw how wonderful your gran has made friends. I hope you find her happy n settled ☺

Ooh nice bargins on the kimono's. That was a super drop in price. Well found hun 😊
Love n best wishes 💕💋

Have a great day with your Grandmother.I hope the future brings you more contentment than the past few months have.We can't avoid upset and stress in our lives, and I'm always amazed at how we cope.Although there will be sadness for a good while, the worst is behind you,and you must look forward.Happy Days Ahead.!!!

Father's Day 2010 is memorable for all the wrong reasons. It was the day I had a emergency room doctor tell me I have Crohn's Disease. I never heard of it before then. So my good news for Father's Day 2016 is I did not end up in the ER and get bad news! It was a good day this year.

I'm absolutely elated because today I finished my A-level exams! I was a little bit worried since they all seemed really hard this year (but isn't that always the way?) but my last exam was Biology and I thought it went excellently so it really ended on a high note :) Now all I have to do is wait for Results Day to see if I did well enough to get into my first choice university! It'll be a long wait though, since results day is 4 days after my birthday in August. Still, I'm glad I have some time to unwind finally!!

Today, I went to a local restaurant for lunch. Because of a mistake they made last week, I didn't have to pay for the whole thing.

Thank you all so much for your support!! I'm still so unable to get over waking up and not having any studying to do :) I'm hoping to study Biomedical Science, but not sure where exactly I'm going after that. Still, I'm so pleased that I even got this far!

My son, 19 is getting more handsome everyday. For a while, Crohn's was really messing with his looks and it was an extra thing to be sad about. My son is beautiful again! :dusty:

Thats great news as i means he is doing too.

My good news for the day - I get my stitches out today! Not yesterday, but the Sunday before, I had gotten a bad cut on my finger while doing yard work, and it required an ER visit and 7 stitches to close the wound. Not a fun time, but it's been healing pretty well and my stitches get to come out in a couple hours. I'm so excited, I can't wait to get these stupid stitches out! It's been difficult to type, eat, write, etc with my finger stitched together and bandaged up (it's the index finger on my right hand, and I'm right-handed). Soon I'll be getting back to normal, I can't wait! :)

Mandy, it definitely was painful! There are so many nerve endings in fingertips, so the injury itself was painful, and getting the stitches was painful too (the doctor kept injecting my finger with numbing stuff, but literally the numbing stuff would then seep right back out my wound - that was horrible and my finger didn't stay numb as a result, so I felt most of the stitches as he was doing them). So yeah, it was not a fun time, but I'm a tough girl. By comparison, getting the stitches out should be super easy. Less than 2 hours to go, not that I'm counting the minutes or anything. :p It's 2:38 PM here right now and my appointment is at 4:20 PM. Wish me luck!

Thanks guys. Mandy, this was actually my first time ever having stitches so it'll be my first time having them taken out as well, so that's good to know for sure that it's better having them taken out! I figured as much, it was so very painful having my stitches put in, so I figured it couldn't be worse than that!

And hey, I must be doing something right if I made it to age 36 before I ever even needed stitches! :p

Little tidbits of good news for today:

My stitches have been out for 4 days now and my finger is healing nicely.

I just bought myself a new kayak. :) So so excited about that!

I'm going to visit my grandmother again this coming weekend and I'm bringing her a birthday cake (she's turning 84!).

Tomorrow's Friday, and Monday is a holiday, so after tomorrow I get a 3-day weekend!

Earlier, I bought some Gatorade. I didn't pull out enough money. The lady behind me paid the remaining amount.

My doctor recommended vitamin C today. Because of checks from my insurance, I didnt have to psy anything for the vitamin C.

I have some good news today. We bought a car over the weekend! It's my grandma's old car - she's no longer driving. She barely drove her car at all in the first place - it's about 10 years old but it's got really low miles. And it's a luxury model - my grandpa was a car aficionado and he always picked out all the luxury options whenever my grandparents would buy a car. So the car has a lot of nice features like heated seats! I'm so looking forward to winter now just because I want to try out the heated seats. :p And, the best part is, we got a seriously good deal. My uncle has taken over my grandma's finances after my grandpa died and my grandma was moved into a memory care unit, and my uncle just wanted to sell the car quickly so he dropped the price wayyyyyy low. This means no car payments, we had enough money to just pay for the whole thing all at once! That's an awesome feeling too! We got a luxury car at a bargain and it's all paid off! And heated seats!!! :D

After shying away from exercise for most of my adult life, I have signed up for an adventure race. I'm hoping to fly the flag for Crohns disease as well as do myself proud on a reasonably big stage. Training is going well thus far, i've knocked 6 minutes off my 5km PB in 5 days, and am adjusting my diet and routine to pick up the slack. Hopefully in a couple of months i'll be writing here saying that I smashed the race, and my crohns, square in the face

All the very best to you joss8.I will look forward to your posts. But remember,it's not the winning that matters,it's the taking part.

Couple of weeks in, things seem to be going well. My 5k PB is now down in the low 24 mins, and i'm cycling 65 miles per week for commuting. To be honest i didn't think my body would be capable of this, but I feel fresher and stronger than before, even better than long before my Crohns was a tiny glint in the eye of my bowel.

Anyway, my target is a sub-50 minute 10km. Having never run 10k in one go before, it could be a little while before I have an update saying i've done it

I used to do three fitness classes a week, and I loved every minute.I got such a buzz and one year I got a prize for best achiever,So I know how you feel. But that was B.C........before crohns.I started cycling at the beginning of the year, but just do 5 -7ml or so at a time. You're doing great but the important thing is ENJOY IT.

This morning, our cab didn't get us to our appointment on time. The good news is that he didn't charge us for the trip. Yesterday, we had dinner from a restaurant. They left out the meat from my wife's meal. We had from there again and because of their mistake they only charged us for one meal.

Usually when I get a refill on Entocort, I have to psy over s hundtrrd dollars. Today, since I only needed s ten day supply I only paid $18.58.

Some good savings there Ron.
My news is i am starting to look into getting a car. Finally after years of being unable to afford one,i should be able to run one again. That will make my life much easier,no more spending an hour alf to get to see my grandson,or a hour going to work. All will be done now in 20 mins or less a saving of around 8hrs a week (blimey thats a days work haha)happy days...and an extra hour or so in bed of a work morning ..😆😆

I think you'll miss all those wet and windy mornings at the bus stop Mandy, and you might be missing your chance to meet Mr. Right on the way to work...... ;)

Haha 😆 Oh well Mr right will have to go on a quest to find me...n if he does that he maybe worth considering!!! As so far iv only come a cross Mr very wrong :frown:

Mandy, have fun car shopping! I'm sure you know this already, but make sure to read reviews online once you start narrowing down what car you want. I made sure to do my research before buying my car (I wanted a small car that was extremely reliable), and it paid off. My car is now 15 years old with nearly 200,000 miles on the odometer and still going strong! :)

There are so many fun features on newer cars, too. My husband just got a new (to us) car, and it has heated seats. I'm SO excited about that, I can't wait for colder weather to come along so that I can try it out! :p I might be a dork but I will be a dork with a warm backside, ha ha.

Love the thought of a warm bottom Cat..
Ye im searching the net for info n details to decided which car n which dealer is offering the best value. Im looking into leasing at the mo,i know the car will not be mine as such but i can renew the car every so often n avoid things like road tax,MOT,servicing etc as they come in the monthly hire costs. So no big bills at one point.Got to check everything carefuly n weigh up the pros n cons.
Glad youd car is still going strong hun,you made the right choice there then.
Love n hugs 💕💕

Our Volvo is almost 10yrs old now,but doesn't look it.We have heated seats which I love.Much rather have the seat on than full heating, that gets stuffy. We have air-con too,but don't have to use it much during the UK summers.Thing is with all the "bells and whistles" as my hubs calls them, there's more stuff to go wrong. But that's "progress" hahaha

Scottsma, yeah, my hubby's "new" (2005 Toyota) car has all the bells & whistles too. It was my grandma's car, and my grandpa was the one who had made sure that the car had all the bells & whistles - or as he called them, "gee-gaws". :p He really liked gee-gaws. So yes, it's more things to potentially break, but it reminds me of my grandpa as well, and I like that. And yeah, our "new" car is also just over 10 years old, but it honestly looks almost brand-new. My grandparents didn't drive it often so it has low miles on the odometer and it was mostly kept in a garage so it wasn't affected by weather. It runs and sounds like a new car, too (it's significantly smoother & quieter than my 15 year old Toyota which has been driven lots and has never been kept in a garage).

My good news of the day - the Entocort seems to have finally kicked in as of today! I feel like a human again. I have an appetite, which I haven't had for weeks. And I don't feel any of the nausea, exhaustion, cramps, etc that I've been having. I feel like finally am starting to get this flare under control! That's a really good thing! :)

Now that's what I call GOOD news.Hope you continue to improve.Maybe it's because some of your recent stress is easing too.
