Hello Everyone. Well it's the 19th. I am getting ready to head to the hospital this morning. My ileostomy surgery is at 1 pm. Little "Gussie" will be born. Wish me well. Talk to you all in a few days.

All the best with the surgery. We will see you on the other side!

Wishing you a pain free recovery time.

Gav :)

Yikes, the big day has arrived! Hope everything goes smoothly and that your recovery is worry and trouble free!

Looking forward to hearing from you when you're able.

Will be thinking of you,

Kismet

Good luck to you! Hope it all goes smoothly and you have a short and uneventful recovery :)

Hello Everyone. I'm home from the hospital. Surgery went well with a free "hiccups." I was in the hospital for 14 days. It's been an emotionally draining experience at different points. Still have to get by staples and stitches removed.

"Gussie" is no noisy and unpredictable. Thankful to be home!

Gwen so glad you are home. Sorry to hear there were some hiccups though. Gussie should quiet down after awhile. Think of new stomas like babies. They just have to learn about life a bit! Hugggggggssssss

Glad to hear you're home now and on the mend. Hope your hiccups are gone :)

I found the worst thing to start with was the weight of the bag as it filled. Is that just me or do others find that disconcerting?

the first few weeks when i stood up felt like i had a backpack on back to front with bricks in it. but i think it was the actual scar that felt heavy rather than the bag.

Empty bags

So glad to have come across someone who thinks like me. Stoma nurses tell you not to empty the bag too frequently(neither of the nurses has stomas). I just hate that warm weight as it descends! I was wearing out the stair carpet in the evenings...that's the time the 'old bag' gets active...so in the end we converted the space under the stairs to a loo. What a difference!

I know we can say what we feel here but even so I'm embarrassed about this; The stoma nurses said there was no need to clean the bag every time it's emptied. I find a little water swilled around until the bag is once again clean is so much more comfortable. I don't like the thought of a dirty bag. Does anyone else do that? Another thing, using public loos; I feel most comfortable at home kneeling in front of the loo. Public loos( even the disabled ones) are often waterlogged. Any suggestions?
I used to carry a small towel when I first came out of hospital along with the rest of my emergency kit. It got so much that it was like taking a baby bag. All down to lack of confidence but I have had a few leaks away from home so I have reason to be wary. Now I just stay at home.:poo:

I think there are quite a few who swirl water around to clean their bags. If you go thru alot of the posts in here you'll see what I mean. I change my bag frequently, meaning a small one to go to work with, and a larger one for nightime.

I dont personally. I use a wet wipe is all. Nor do I lean over the toilet. I sit down as normal. (not in a public loo though eek!)

What do you mean you just stay at home!? Goodness, the world is out there waiting for you!!!! Go out and grab it with both hands!

reply from Paddy Holmes

I've had quite a few nasty experiences and have had so much taken away I that I can't eat AND go out! It only takes 20 minutes for the sytem to empty which can be nerve wracking. Since the op, meals out are off the agenda but we enjoy a coffee out and then get home quickly!
I try to keep my diet fibre freeand live mostly on fish, carbs and cheese. I have diluted fresh fruit juice and teeny slivers of fruit but I have to say, the joy has gone out of eating!:boring:

a few questions

Do you use a one piece or two piece pouching system. I came home from the hospital with a one piece but I am thinking I want to try to 2 piece. I don't like using the clap at the end of the bag? What do you use for deodorizers in your bag?

question about emptying

Happiness is.....an empty bag! I empty mine at the first sign. Dont like the weight at all.

So far, I just stand at the bathroom wash sink and empty into a portable basin. Then I dump it into the toilet. I tried sitting on the toilet but I prefer to stand at the sink. I pour a little liquid cleanser into the basin before emptying.

Also, I stood in the shower w/out my bag for the first time. It felt sooooooo good to have the warm water running directly over my stoma. I felt much cleaner.

I still have staples, stitches and swelling. Trying to get comfortable with my routine is challenging.

Welcome to the club!! Hope everything went well!

Well my hospital stay was eventful...14 days. I love being home. Now I'm just trying to get used to the new and improved me. Need tips. I came home with the 1 piece pouching system but I am thinking I may like the 2 piece system better. Still swollen with staples and stitches, so I'm in very loose clothing. Things are on the up & up. My hubby is wonderful!!!! So thankful for such a man.

I prefer the two piece system myself. I use Coloplast Sensura Flex. But one of the reasons I use that (big flange) is because of my hernia. I realy like the 2 piece systems because of the flexibility. Small bag while out and about and at work, large bag for night time. I never need to clean the bag, I just use wet toilet paper to clean the clasp at the bottom.

I sit on the loo because its just easier for me. When I have to pee, I empty the bag if necessary. Simples! Also, quicker to flush the smell away! While you are still just home, your stoma will shrink. And your tummy swelling will go down too. So it will be difficult with your stoma changing sizes. Just keep measuring!

Hi there - I echo what Misty says above. Your belly will shrink when the swelling goes down and so will your stoma. I am wearing a pair of "lazy pants" right now that I couldn't fit in after my surgery b/c my belly was so big. Just give it some time.

I prefer a one piece system, but we are all different and have different likes as far as our bags, cleaning style, emptying, etc.

I did a major cleanout of my closet. And for a shopper like me, it was a great excuse to buy new clothes! I love maternity pants/jeans that have a big stretch panel that comes up over the belly. They are soooo comfortable and don't bind around my stoma at all. Plus, they hold the bag in place so it's nice and secure. My signature look is a short dress with legging or capri leggings underneath. Again, holds the bag in place and provides me with some extra security without being binding. This look works in summer with sandals and winter with boots. If I want to wear a shorter dress without leggings, I wear cotton bike shorts underneath.

I empty into the toilet. Too much work to fuss with rinsing out a basin or cup. Besides, if you are drinking enough water (which you should, you need to be really careful about dehydrating!), you will have to pee every hour anyway like I do, so you are already sitting down anyway!!

You'll find your way. Keep on feeling good and get plenty of rest.

WoW. Just realized I am NOT drinking enough. I was wondering why I don't pee more...like I was doing in the hospital. I am totally into the legging scene too.

I drink at least one 32 ounce SmartWater everyday, or something with electrolytes, like Gatorade or Propel. I can really feel it if I don't. Please be very, very careful about dehydration. It can sneak up on you really quickly!!

Also, for most of us, if you get dehydrated, it will make your output very watery. The more water you drink, the more you pee, but the less comes out in your stool!
