DS has right flank pain - so given his kidneys already have cysts - Doc ordered an Ultrasound.
WE will get that soon since he is "fine' right now.

Urine look good except - for traces of blood.:ybatty:

Any thing crohn's related that can cause traces of blood in the urine?

Does blood typically just appear for no reason?:yfaint:

Blood should not appear for no reason but that is not to say that glitches don’t happen and resolve just as quickly.

In the context of flank pain though you would have to think that it is related. :(

It is interesting that it is right flank pain but not so much if his Crohn's is well controlled. I say that because inflammation of the terminal ileum can cause structural issues that affect the kidney, most notably Hydronephrosis. The swollen and inflamed bowel presses against the right ureter causing obstruction and therefore urine to back up into kidney which in turn causes it to swell, this can then cause a number of potential issues.

scope in late august last year was clean- and all his inflammatory numbers have gone back to normal ( blood work two weeks ago)after being slightly above since last June .

Thanks
Just waiting for the Ultrasound then for results.
;)

Good to hear the Crohn’s side of things continues to be well in check. :)

I hope whatever has caused the blood to appear proves to be a one off mlp and the flank pain resolves by itself. Sending loads of luck and healing thoughts your way! :ghug:

Hope things resolve without having to have any treatment. Hope the ultrasound appt comes through soon

FYI - Kidney Stones are always a possible complication of Crohn's. Keep that in mind if there's kidney pain. Stones are less common in children, but are possible.

I've had stones for a decade or so. Kidneys look like a diamond mine now. I sit here typing with a stent from my last surgery.

Hope this helps.

MLP,
Just wanted to see how he is doing. Like Justin said kidney stones are seem to be more common in people with Crohn's. Did they check him for stones?

I had this not so long ago. Being female I am more prone to utis than your son, but it's still possible if he's immune suppressed. Anyway, I was treating for a bladder infection, it was mighty painful worse than any uti previous but as soon as that cleared up everything was back to "normal"

Could be something or nothing.
Sometimes our bodies just like to throw a curve ball.

Hope he feels better soon!

Forgot to Mention and wanted to give bit more detail:

1) Blood in Urine is a huge indicator of Kidney Stones: As stones are jagged, their traveling down the urinary tract irritates lining and causes blood to appear.

2) Flank Pain (Kidney) is another symptom of Kidney Stones

3) Kidney stones are the most commonly encountered complications of IBD—particularly oxalate stones. Kidney stones are more common in Crohn's patients with disease of the small intestine than in the general population because of fat malabsorption. Fat binds to calcium, leaving oxalate (a type of salt) free to be absorbed and deposited in the kidney, where it can form into stones

Have Doctor Order a Kub + Ultrasound.

Novice Mentioned: If a Urinary Tract Infection, the Urine Smells Foul. Blood in Urine may also appear. Uti's are more common in Girls than Boys.

Oh geez....we just woke up to nearly the same thing. A is peeing blood and it is on the toilet paper when she wipes. She's in enough pain that even walking is difficult. We are headed to urgent care now. Our poor kids!

The pain is really mild for DS at this point and no visible blood.
Ultrasound should rule out kidney stones as well as other kidney stuff .

Hope she feels better

Ive been diagnosed with Crohns for 2 years now, still unable to find a treatment to settle it. I started Humira in January, I wish I hadn't, Ive no end of UTIs and tonsillitis and I just generally haven't felt well. No antibiotics can sort my UTI, they cannot grow any bugs from my urine, just traces of blood in there. Theyre sending me for an ultrasound of my kidneys but that could take weeks.
I just feel like I am going round and round and I am miserable!!! Is it the Humira causing this?!

gmcgregor8 - My girl is on mtx, not humira, but I'm starting to wonder if it has weakened her immune system and making her more susceptible to viruses/infections. In the past 2 months she's had a UTI, stomach bug that landed her inpatient, sore throat/cold, and now a sore throat/possible ear infection. I think I'm going to ask for a CBC and maybe you should as well.

DS has had regular blood work since dx including CBC and many other things.
Remicade and humira have not caused any issues with these.

I have blood tests every month and have extra this past month after being ill but nothing has shown as far as I'm aware. I rang my consultant and told them Im not taking Humira anymore, I'd rather be in pain than have all of this added illness and stress on top. I lived with the pain for 4 years so I am used to it.
Ive recently been told to try going gluten free, even though im not intolerant. As it is difficult for any one to digest so by cutting it out it will allow your gut to relax a bit more when eating but im not sure if this works?! I'll try anything at the minute, Im considering acupuncture too!

Desperate!!

Johnny had blood in his urine, protein too but no white blood cells. They checked for kidney stones with ultra sound and he was clear.

His ended up being kidney disease (likely IGA nephrapathy) They said he will likely always have blood and protein in his urine.

Because there were no white cells they did not think there was an infection. They tested his urine for the type of protein and one of them was albumin so they know the kidneys had inflamed glomeri that allowed protein to leak through, albumin is a larger one so they knew others were present without testing for them.

DS's Nephrologist and GI had lots of conversations about whether meds could cause the blood and they both felt it could not. 6mp is actually a treatment for IGA which is why they aren't doing a biopsy because they would likely treat him with what he is already on. It would be our only way to confirm exactly what type of kidney disease he has and possibly how severe it is but the risks didn't seem worth it (Nephrologist agreed) Fwiw, the nephrologist said the blood was not enough to cause anemia or have any affect on Johnny's health. As long as things don't get worse he will be fine and we just have to be careful of meds, tests, etc that may be hard on the kidneys.

Nephrologist mentioned some kids have protein in their urine and it is normal for them, blood he did not feel the same way about.

Hope you get some answers soon, this particular ride is not fun. ((((Hugs))))
