Has anyone had any experiences or success with Naturopaths treating UC. I am currently taking Measasal x 12 p/d, Salofalk, Pred 50mg & Imuran 50mg and a good friend suggested I go see her Naturopath as I really dont want to be taking all these drugs.
I went to see her yesterday (keeping open minded) and was very suprised at how differently she looks at this disease. She believes that the condition is initially caused through stress and anxiety (which I definately suffer from.....but who doesnt right?) So she wants to firstly treat my stress and then treat my inflamation by hooking me up to some machine that runs electrical currents through my body and prescribing me more pills. I must say I am very interested in her theories and am hopefull that what she tells me might just be true. She has asked me to take Probex for a week which is an anti inflamatory probiotic, Glutagenics for soothing and healing the linkages in the gut wall and Adaption to restore energy and lots of natural anti inflamatory support.
Hoping someone can give me some input to all this Natural healing stuff

I have heard of these machines and had one hooked up to me once.
I am pretty open minded to alternative medicine, but my experience left me with the same skepticism that I have with standard medical tests.

In another words they can at times detect a problem but neither are fool proof.

I would guess the naturopath would recommend supplements but not prescribe drugs. Many of them cannot prescribe drugs.

I would give it a whirl. My chiropractor has done things for me that I would not have thought possible. Just be skeptical as you should with any medical opinions. If I had one close to me, I would give them a shot.

Good luck

Dan

From the sound of it her approach to medicine's still somewhat based in science, which I'm in favour of, but if your current treatment's working for you I've really got to ask: why fix what isn't broken? You're risking so much for the sake of going 'natural'. Obviously if you knew for a fact and in advance that both approaches would work you'd want to keep your treatments as natural as possible, but I'm going to be totally honest with you... I just don't see the payoff of the risk/reward setup here. Going off the drugs sounds more dangerous (especially considering how high your doses are) than the risk of any potential side effects they might have.

I obviously can't tell you what to do, so I'm just being as honest as I can. If you're going to see the naturopath anyway the only advice I have is to walk right out of there if she so much as mentions homeopathy. It's the 21st century's equivalent of a magic spell and possibly the most profitable fraud going on in medicine at the moment. Anyone who tells you it's real is either misinformed or dishonest, and I wouldn't trust a doctor/physician who was either.

I didn't get into remission until I ditched my traditional meds and saw a naturopath....

I still get regular scopes to monitor my disease but I'm in better shape now than I was when I was on tons of prescribed synthetic BS.

That being said...I watch my diet and my case seems to be pretty mild compared to others on this site. I still have no scar tissue or polyps after 10+ years with this disease. Some people need the regular meds and that's fine.

You gotta remember that most of the synthetic meds on the market were designed to mimic naturally occurring substances...just sayin

The most profitable fraud in medicine....probably the multi billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. Nexium, Humira and Remicade are all in the top 10 grossing medications of 2012. Nobody profits more from gastrointestinal disorders than pharmaceutical companies. I'm not defending Homeopathy but c'mon man...

There are massive issues within the industry for sure, but I wouldn't call them frauds. Unethical? Go for it, but at least their stuff works. Homeopathy takes money and offers nothing in return.

It's the difference between charging a man dying of thirst £100 for a bottle of water and charging that same man £100 for a totally empty bottle.

"The bottle will remember the water and your thirst will be cured!"

Thanks for your comments LondonSnow but the problem is my medication is NOT working and has never worked. I just keep getting put on higher doses and more meds every time I go back to dr. Im getting very disheartened and this is why im turning to other alternatives.

I see a naturopathic doctor but we mainly discuss dietary issues because not only am I dealing with Crohn's, I'm also dealing with something called PCOS, which is somewhat of a metabolic condition.

All the advice she gives me works with all my meds I'm currently on and my GI doctor is aware of everything I'm taking. At first, he advised me against seeing a naturopathic doctor but appreciated I told him I was going that route and even ordered some blood work she requested.

I do believe in NP.

However let me warn against her saying it's because of stress.
Does stress flare a number of diseases, YES! Is it the cause of them, NO!
Keep in mind I have a three year old with these problems (still undiagnosed).
She knows NO stress. Except when her brother refuses to call her Cinderella. I'm just saying this so you don't get lulled into a false sense of security. As you know it can hit you out of no where.
Mind you, it sounds like you've been put through it all any ways.
I'm so happy to hear you want to try different ways of helping your body to heal and get into remission. Were trying this on some aspect with Grace but first I want to see if and what damage has been done to her track, and probably will have to use meds to get her uncontrolled. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of thing and be able to help her in the future more.

Edit: I'm not trying to put you NP lady down. I do know some on here believe it can be caused from stress. I have yet to see that in my baby girl's life and all my research.

Ditto FW!

We have always used a combo approach with my son. I do believe many of the supplements the naturo advised us to use are helpful, but I ain't about to go off the map and risk my son's health.

If it were me however, I would be much more inclined to go au natural. At least for a trial run.

Good luck with it Jaffa!

I do think natural therapies have a place but not with this disease, perhaps early days to prevent it but once you have it you need general medicine, I decided to try a naturopath and he gave a girlfriend the same treatment as me for a completely different problem, meanwhile I went for my normal colonoscopy and was diagnosed with cancer, so glad I stuck with mainstream medicine or I wouldn't be here. The naturopath won't do the colonscopy, you still need to keep an eye on things that way.
