Hi Everyone,
After having my colon removed 10 months ago and managing to keep my rectum so hopefully i could have a reversal at some point, i have recently found out that my rectum is infected and is flaring. Therefore, i was wondering if anyone else has been in this position and what options they had or did.
For example did they have to remove the rectum? And if so how long were you off work and does the surgery just take place around the rectum or do they have to open up the stomach?

Or did you try medicine to get the chrohns under control and then still have the reversal?

I suppose i would like to know if anyone who has had an infected rectum/stump but still managed to have a reversal?

Thanks guys and girls.

Hi Adrian, I had my colon removed 12 months ago and my rectum didn't stop flaring. I had it removed just over 3 weeks ago. My surgeon wasnt prepared to do a reversal because crohns could recur.
It is another major surgery and it does go in thru the stomach - took about 4 hours. It was nowhere near as bad as the first op tho. Mine was laporascopically assisted which is not fully laporascopic and not fully open surgery, but somewhere inbetween.

I feel like I could return to work very soon if I didn't have other health problems. I am so pleased I had this surgery done.

Good luck,

Kaz xxx

I am currently under investigation for Crohns.
Had my colon removed in feb this year after being told I definitely only had UC. 2 weeks post op my problems started. Bleeding and mucous from the rectum but also stomach and swallowing issues that are still on going.
It has not been said outright but more been hinted at that if i do have Crohns I wont get the j-pouch surgery or re connective surgery.
I have so far tried pentasa suppositories, colifoam, steroids and anti biotic suppositories, also had a go at cipro and budesonide. Have even tried all of the above together during a very rough few days but nothing is working on my UC in my rectum or my possible Crohns in my stomach and esophagus.
I do wish you well. Let us know how you get on.
Sharon
