Urge to “go” when turning onto right side.

My husband has Crohn's. He is currently on Humira but has been doing worse lately. One of his strangest and most aggravating symptoms is this: when he lies down on his right side, OR rolls from the left to the right in bed, he immediately has to use the bathroom.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am posting at his request. Thanks.

I haven't experienced that directly, when laying down, but I suspect a couple of things.

The first is that he almost certainly has loose stool so most likely he is inflamed in his guts to begin with. As you said he is doing worse lately I am assuming this didn't happen when he was doing better and not so inflamed. The loose stool would allow this to happen now, when it didn't before. The other is that it is just the particular position just allows the loose stool to move down via gravity and that produces the need to go.

I make sure I go to the bathroom before I leave in the morning as I will be driving for several hours and do not want to be stopping. I drink a couple of cups of coffee and walk around as the gravity effect works for me that way and I can go reliably in a half hour or so. I am also missing a valve in my ileum so it is all the more important for me to do that routine before leaving home. In my case, I am not inflamed, but the lack of that valve causes its own problems but I have good control over it. When I have been inflamed years ago nothing will stop the need to go constantly.

If your husband is doing worse he really should find a way to get it under control one way or another. Inflammation = damage.

Good luck.

Dan
