Hi i have crohns in small bowel and there is an abscess now inbetween two ridges of my bowel which is too risky to drain as bowel is inflamed.. im on cipro and flagyl bloods white cell count went down to 11.6 now back up to 16 and i have huge pressure in that lower right area

there talking about a stronger antibiotic now and could be on it for 8 weeks?

anyone have experience with abscess like this so afraid of it brusting by itself and the bowel.. i have started eating again and this is wen blloods rose do u think this contributed to the swelling again however i dont have vominting and only little D

THANKS any tips of blocking the stress out be good too :)

Glad you came here for advice! First off, take a DEEP breath. Sounds like you are on the right road and the doc is doing the right thing. I had this exact same condition when I was first diagnosed and was on the same antibiotics. I was so scared to eat for fear of a D attack along w/throwing up. I survived but it drained all the energy out of me. However, keep in touch w/your docs, don't overdo anything! Try to stay busy reading, playing games on the computer, writing in a journal, anything to get your mind off of this. It is depressing but know that we are here for you! Keep in touch!

Hmmm...rock and a hard place. Abscesses usually need draining as your body walls them off, making it difficult for white blood cells and antibiotics to penetrate. The best drainage procedures are by interventional radiology. They have more finesse than most surgeons. If intravenous antibiotics don't work, you may want to blow their minds by suggesting intraperitoneal installation of antibiotics.

thanks for all your help

Yes, I had abscess. I was in the hospital and taking my antibiotics as well as prednisone via IV. After that it was a 3-4 month recovery period at home. Admittedly, I felt depressed, scared and ready to throw in the towel. Luckily, I had great family support.
I knew zero about Crohns at the time, had no clue what numbers meant, but was told that it was a good thing I had been treated when I was treated...
Ask plenty of questions. Call your doc if you want more answers or don't understand the ones you got. Be informed. I remember saying (in a drugged state: "Oh, Crohns, good, now what can you give me & when's it going away?"
The pain was on my right side and it was so awful that, in the hospital, I was on a morphine drip. At home, I forget what I was on but once the antibiotics kicked in, the pain lessened. I was on so much prednisone (and eventually had an allergic reaction to it...) It reduced the swelling in the colon but made my joints stiff to a point where I no longer could walk.
Keep asking those questions, keep doing research (not much out there @ the time but the doc gave me some information and a neighbor visited me who also had Crohns (I never even knew that!)
Hang in there! Feel better and let me know how you are doing!

how long did it take for your pressure and pain in right side to ease mine had eased for 3 days now back as bad as ever cant stand up straight..

i'm on oral predisone now instead of iv's all my antibioitcs are tablet now too i dont think there working as good as iv's all together nearly on antibiotics 2 weeks did u also get a thingly sensation in that area too ?

Is this the same abscess as before, or a new one?

My son was diagnosed with CD in December and he suffered with the complications of abscesses. As Dr s. said, the only real way to effectively treat them is to have it drained. My son had extensive inflammation when his drain was inserted by the radiologist, there were no problems with the procedure.

Woah! Your condition sounds way worse than mine was and it does sound as though you may have another abscess!!! It has to be drained! Call the doc and get seen! You shouldn't have been painfree and then had the pain again. Sounds like something else is brewing! Let me know how you do! Thinking of you!

hey dusty matt yea its the same abscess the told me it will take possibly two months to kill it on antibiotics

the wont insert a drain because the bowel is inflammed and the abscess is located inbtween two ridges of bowel they are afraid the will rupture my bowel all the did was lance the abscess(collection of pus) that rose to me skin.. was your son's abscess like this?

how is he doing now is there a chance of the awful thing coming back?

troughtout the day the pressure on my right side would be reali bad then subside they seem to think this ok and because my right side isnt hard as it was i.e softer things are ok?

bloods are staying at 16 which the only told me today the steriods can affect your white bllod cell count.. lowerd to 35mg today pred instead 40mg

today has been a good day pressure/pain wise and i.m eating small things so hopefully the abscess is going away :)

ive been told the stress im putting my body under thinking and worrying about it too much isnt helping the problem trying to reduce that too :)

Glad you are starting to feel better! Yeah, stress can kill you! Try reading; watching tv; doing crosswords or puzzles... anything to keep your mind off of this dreadful disease... stay in touch and keep feeling better!

I see two scenarios here. It is the same abscess and it obviously hasn't resolved but it hasn't changed significantly either. Therefore they are doing what they are because as you say they don't want to risk putting a drain.

The other scenario is, has the abscess actually reformed. If this is the case it would point more toward a fistula being involved. Matt's abscess did not come to the surface. If there is a fistula it will not heal without surgery. He had surgery 3 weeks ago and is doing fine now.

The bloods don't always tell the full extent of things either. Yes, Prednisone can raise your white cell count but it can also mask symptoms so it can be a double edged sword.

Matt is also on Imuran which can cloud symptoms as well. After Matt's drain was inserted and we were home for two months, awaiting things to settle, his WCC fluctuated between normal and highs of about 16. His CRP fluctuated as well as did his pain and the consistency of *mass* that the GP could continue to palpate. At times the *mass* was bigger and harder and at other times it was softer and smaller. The outcome was...the drain had resolved the abscess and kept it from reforming due to the fistula but when they opened him up they found another fistula and abscess and it was this unknown one that had been niggling at him for the previous two months.

Everything I have said is just our story and speculation, about your issues, on my part. I don't want to you to think this is what is happening to you and create extra stress for you! I guess what I am trying to say is the important thing with an abscess in this area of the bowel is to determine if the abscess has a fistula attached or not, the treatment will initially be the same but the outcome is vastly different.

hi guys thanks for all your help wont see my doc till weds

guess what though i've now got mrsa and e coli i picked up the mrsa in the hospital.. i'm on gentimycein and tazavan for this(i think thats how you spell them) theyv stopped the cipro because its the same family as gentimycein still on the flagyl pred and pentasa but my right hand side is back to being as hard as a rock a visible swollen buldge and the D is worse than i ever had

does anyone think these new meds are interferring with my crohns or will i just have days where my stomach is rock solid pain is torrable with pain killers however i cant do much except rest even a shower is exhausting.. i know it takes time for meds to work but my syptoms seem to be really bad for few days then be ok the start again...

cant help but think the D is from all the antibiotics or the e coli any suggesstions on this? as ive never had it like this at home rarely had D was always just pain and swelling

sorry about all the questions theres so much going on in there i dont no whats what(as i said also have an abscess on my bowel which thankfully isn giving me much pain today)

anyways thanks for replies in advance :)
