Hi folks,

Hope all are doing well :)

I haven't been on here since before my surgery and thought I would ask about something that's getting me down a bit after my surgery.

Basically I had open surgery in February for a right heliocolectomy, where they removed my Ileum, a small section of small bowel and a section of my large intestine, roughly about 1/4 I believe, they also took my appendix at the same time (in for a penny etc)

Effectively the surgery has been a complete success, all the scarring pain has gone and I don't have bowel pain anymore :)

However my bowel movements have settled down a lot and I have basically normal poo's, however I still have the issue of suddenly needing to go to the loo, even when its not diarrheah, so obviously its a bit of a mental issue as I feel a sudden need and get a bit panicky.

I am putting weight on, which isn't the best as I feel a bit portly and worry that getting a bigger belly may make my scar sttecth or be dangerous, I know that sounds daft, but its just in my head.

So plan is to start exercising again to get back to about 63kg rather than the 68 I am around now.

I just wondered if any post op folks on here found a similar issue that they felt sudden urges and panic but didn't have diarrheah anymore, and if that the urges will settle down a bit. as its making me travelling difficult and rather stresfull and the GF (while extremely supportive, does get a bit upset now and then that I get a bit shouty when travelling.:(

All the best

Rick

Hi Rick
I am glad to hear that your surgery went well and that you are on the mend. I'm coming up on two years post resection in which I also lost my appendix, caecum and ileocaecal valve. I experience the urgency you describe, but I had just assumed that it was my 'new normal' and down to my bowel being a bit shorter than it used to be ( they took 30cm. )
But yes, you could be right maybe it is a mental thing. I have a few more issues with D than I did pre-op, I guess due to the valve removal, but if I avoid fatty, sugary foods it helps.
