I've just received a letter through from the NHS today about a date for my Ileostomy reversal operation (20th September). This op should have been done four months ago, and I've only just got this date. I'm a little upset, but quite relived at the same time. Of course, I want rid of the bag as soon as possible, because my confidence is extremely low with the way I look -- I feel a bit of an invalid, to tell you the truth. But I've just started a new job about a month ago, which is going really well, and they're talking about promoting me within the next week or so; with the op coming up, I'm going to be in hospital for two weeks (at least), not being able to work, and I really don't want to be out of work again when it's all over.

Anyone have any words of encouragement?

I guess all you can do is tell your employer the situation and hope they are okay with it? Otherwise what do you do? keep the bag?

Its tough I know but what choice do you have?

Good luck with getting it sorted eh?

I don't really want to keep the bag, but I don't want to end up back at square one either (unemployed, having on money, and being low on confidence). Bit of a dilemma really.

If you told them in the interview process you may have surgery soon... then they cant sack you for for going into hospital. If you didn't they may have a case for dismissal on the grounds of 'non-disclosure of material facts'. OTOH many jobs have probationary periods written in the contract so either party can just walk away. So could be tricky... all depends. Play it by ear and see what they say?!

On the plus side you've got a date for surgery you want. I'd vote for going for it. Confidence is vastly underrated if you don't have much of it!

Thing is, Beth, this op was supposed to happen four months ago. When I went in for pre-operative testing, the doctors told me it would be another 3-4 months before anything would happen. So they gave me the all clear 'til then to get a job.

It's only been a month and I get this letter. I did inform my boss at the time of the interview that I was going to have a reversal, but not for 3-4 months. I'm just a bit worried they're going to be angry with me, 'cause they took a chance hiring me in the first place when no one else would. It's out of my hands when the NHS decides to bring me in, but I'm still fed up about the whole thing.

Is your direct report at work nice enough to talk to about this? Maybe you could explain the situation and tell them how important the job is to you? I know it is hard to get dates over there for surgeries - just wondering if you ask the boss if this is going to effect your ability to get promoted and see if you postponed it just a bit, would that help? That is crap right? IDK - I'm just trying to give you some options here.....sorry you are having to go through this.....let us know how it ends up working out. Keep that chin up.....

I'm going to pull the two bosses aside and have a word with them on Saturday I think, Shantel. Thanks for the advice :)

Surely if they are wanting to promote you, they will be understanding will your operation! It's hard to keep good employees.

ya have to look after yourself. You are doing what you have to do, but they like you for the work you do anyways, so they want you healthy to continue doing it. :) Talking to them will surely make them realize it's your health, and if they want to keep you as a good employee.....well...they have to be understanding. (OR go talk to HR and see if you're safe. :) ) ..if in doubt check it out sort of thing...good luck.
