For those of you that have had surgery, how much weight did you lose? I am probably going to have a resection (I am not sure of the terms) where I have a blockage. My doctor said to plan on 3-7 days in the hospital. I was just curious how much weight others have lost.

Hi Desiree! I lost most of my weight before the surgery (about 20 lbs) as I couldn't really eat solid food for a while due to a stricture which caused severe pain. I was released 5 days post-op and actually came home weighing the same amount. I was on 'sips' only for days 1 - 3, day 4 post-op I was moved to clear liquids, and then on day 5 I was finally moved to a regular diet. I did have an IV the entire time, although starting on day 3 I was only getting 60 cc's and on day 4 I was only getting 40 cc's. I lost about 5 pounds after I got home as I had no appetite for a few days so I still consumed mainly liquids until about 1 weeks post-op; however I very slowly have been adding things back in to my diet. I now eat all solid foods, I'm just still adding things back in to make sure I don't end up with any issues. I have gained back about 3 lbs since I came home.

Sorry...I meant to say I was on mainly liquids until a little after 1 week post-op. I started with white bread toasted. I still haven't eatten foods high in fiber..those still make me a bit nervous.

Pre-surgery, i had lost some weight because of a stricture that I had. I had lots of pain and vomiting every time I ate.

however, after the surgery is when I lost the most weight. I ended up losing about 20lbs afterward. It took me a good month to really be able to eat without having pain and nausea/vomiting.

Now 3 1/2 months in, I've gained 15lbs back, so still down from the day I had my surgery.

Thanks for your replies. I also have a stricture but I don't have pain when I eat. I just have pain if I am not on a constant stool softener/laxative routine.

BTW I also have a Sadie.

Hi,
I had always found it difficult to loose weight. I only lost a few lbs before surgery. After my surgery and to date I am 2lb away from loosing 2 stone. I have had some complications though so that's not helped.
It was weight I needed to loose anyway so was not sorry to see it go.
Wish you well in your op.
Let us know, when you can how it goes.

I entered hospital weighing 80.5Kg and left 7 days later weighing 75.8Kg, so lost nearly 5Kg (11lb). A week later after eating well and I am back to 77Kg, but have clearly lost muscle mass, particularly on my arms and legs.

Not related to surgery as such, but my weight fluctuates massively in general due to CD, so can't imagine it would be too different if (when) I have surgery.
During my last flare up, I lost about 20lbs in 4 weeks, but saying that prior to the flare up I had been really well for a long time (since starting Remicade in Nov 10) and put on no end of weight, as nothing really caused me to flare during that time.

I seem to have the opposite problem of most Crohnies - I lost a bunch of weight before surgery due to a stricture/inability to eat, but right after surgery I gained quickly. I'm currently about 30 lbs heavier than before my first surgery. I blame an unhealthy relationship with food and my tendency to go for easy to prepare packaged foods post-op.

My stricture also did not give me enough grief to blunt my appetite at all. I had to just fast during the day, when away on business, just so that I did not have to visit the loo 10 times a day. I then feasted later a night, which was not good. Anyway, I did not loose a single pound in hospital or after the op. I always understand the importance of calories when I'll, so force myself to eat big meals.

My relationship with food is probably the reason I have this damn disease, but sometimes it comes in handy...

hi!
i lost about 7lbs in the year before the surgery as i had a stricture (caused a lot of pain, vomiting, loss of appetite), then maybe another 7lb the week before it as i was in hospital (as i was not eating and was mainly on a drip). since the surgery 3 weeks ago I have lost another 7 lb.

it was good for me to loose it all as I am now down to a healthy weight for my height (i loved food!!), but if i loose anymore I will make a conscious effort to keep it on. i am still on a low fiber diet and am trying to avoid high fat food as it doesn't go down well.

good luck with your surgery!x
