What do you do when your crohns symptoms keep you up well into the night?
During the day I cope mainly by channel hopping napping whatever my brain will handle.
But when it gets to 1am n I can't sleep due to pain or fevers I just don't know what to do lol TV annoys me I am too tired to ready yet I can't sleep -.-

Lol just looking for ways to pass the time and distract from my horrible pain :(

Hope everyone is as well as can be!

Hello :),

Quite often I will stay up until I've had a BM cos I know that if I go to bed I won't sleep, if I do go to bed and I have 'that' pain I will lie and read until I go poop, this is a very lonely part of Crohns, I have even posted on here at 4am on an especially bad night. I have also got addicted to solitaire which I play on my kindle, anything to put the time in. Sorry that your having this bother, I will send you healing thoughts and hope it improves for you. :ghug:

I either get on the forum or read. :) My focus on books is much, much better than on television or other things, so I can usually manage to distract myself a little that way.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks guys that was basically my night lol. I've been addicted to a few games also solitaire included haha. And I love to read more than anything, so that when I know I'm sick, I haven't picked up my kindle for nearly a week lol.
I managed to fall asleep eventually wasnt consistent sleep and I didn't wake up till 12pm! Lol but my mum can finally see I'm not feeling well haha! Right who spends their summers at home sleeping! Oh well I'm going to bring my appt forward and download some new games incase this happens again tonight! Lol

Thank you both I was so bored and frustrated! Needed the ideas!

I fall asleep quickly due to being exhausted but then wake up for hours during the night. I find I like to read things that are easy with not too much thought. I've read The Hunger Games and Divergent series in the wee hours of the morning. I also play the Mah Jongg matching games.

I hope you can start sleeping better soon.

If you can't fall asleep but feel tired you can try listening to some relaxing music, maybe putting the tv on low or going on the Internet. The Crohn's forum chat is 24 hours so you never know who in the world might be on.

I asked my Dr. for something to calm me down and help me sleep. They gave me ativan(lorazepam) and anti~anxiety drug. It absolutely made a world of difference for me. I sleep so deep now, where as before I was up several times a night.
When I can't sleep because of stress and the medicine isn't helping all the way, I come on the forum and see who's about. Almost always, someone is because of the time differences around the globe! Hope this helps you!

I've been up most of the night as I just had my kidney stones blasted (thank you Stoma!).
When I stay up late etc - I cruise the forum like the others do. Because its worldwide - there's always something going on. I watch TV shows from my hard drive - and I got cable and a big screen TV installed I my bedroom.
I read longform.org - it curates amazing magazine articles online - not the same commitment as a book - so easier to manage the reading aspect.
I watch TED Talks on line - same deal - nothing longer than 20 mins.
I also pat my cats a lot.
It's very soothing and who doesn't like cat cuddles.

I also refuse to get anxious about my lack of sleep.
I only work 3 days per week - so if I'm tired one day - I can usually sleep in the next day.
It's a real relief.

I can't stand insomnia. When I'm tired I can't focus on anything, not even reading or listening to music, and if I don't get a lot of sleep (at least 8 hours a night, can be more like 10 sometimes, and I still end up napping during the day) I can't function the next day and feel miserable.

So I take amitriptyline prescribed by my doctor. It knocks me out completely. One problem I had with sleep was needing to get up so often during the night to use the loo, then I'd be awake feeling uncomfortable. The amitriptyline doesn't stop the discomfort or bowel problems, but it makes me so sleepy that I fall right back to sleep again as soon as I'm back in bed. There have also been times when my family say they heard me up in the bathroom in the night, but I'd not even been aware of it. I'm a life-long sleep walker, so I assumed it was that (pretty much anything I can do awake, I can act out when sleepwalking). But I also think the med might be causing a bit of short-term memory loss, and perhaps I just don't remember getting up. Either way, the nights are better now!
Even right after I'd had surgery and was in pain, the nights still weren't too bad - I'd be awake from pain a bit, but nothing like how I was after previous surgeries.

Thanks for all the tips!
An Unxmas as much as its good youre sleeping and I'm glad you're feeling better, I'm not sure i could cope to be that "drugged up" the idea of sleeping pills scares the crap outta me. I take two Tylenol pm some nights and can't wake myself from an ten hour sleep!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who needs day time naps! Sometimes it's literally straight after getting washed and dressed I'm sleepy again lol!

But you'll all be pleased to know not only have I arranged to get my bloods double checked, I was up till 3am last night because I got lost in a book! Lol
Also downloaded a few of those games suggested and a few others they keep me occupied when all else fails! Oh that and online shopping... Lol

Hope you are all well! I'm hoping to go get my bloods drawn this afternoon and also have some peace of mind or take some action! :)

Yeah, I know sleeping pills are not for everyone. The one I take is non-addictive and I don't have to worry about being dozy in the daytime as I don't drive or do anything else that would be dangerous if I got tired. I hope you get some answers from your blood tests. :)

Just out of curiosity who prescribes them for you? I'm not sure i could take them, even Tylenol on leaves me groggy for half the day but if I'm in that much pain it's better than no solution same with the pain pills I guess.

My GP prescribes them for me since I told her I couldn't sleep. We tried a couple of other things first which didn't work. I didn't need to see any kind of specialist or consultant to get them.

Ah okay. I was just wondering if your GI could prescribe them or not, because he couldn't prescribe my pain relief he probably couldn't prescribe that I guess! Thanks though glad that works for you!
I resorted to two Tylenol pm last night lol eventually was asleep by 1am n it was 1130 that I woke up! Feeling like poop for it though lol
