Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, although, I have been reading the posts on here for a couple of months.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 2 months ago and my first reaction was relief as I thought I had the big C. But, now I've had time for my diagnosis to settle in I feel ok-ish just a little worried about what's round the corner, especially as I'm in the last year of my degree.

This forum has helped me out so much with all kinds of information, so thank you everyone :).

I was just wondering what people think of the Robin Gibb situation. He was in the papers yesterday and most articles are saying its an inflammation of the colon- so is this likely to be Crohn's disease? As, I have read different terms for a twisted colon and is this a potential problem for someone with Crohn's or something different. Sorry, I'm new to all this and it's not something I've read about ...yet.

Hello and welcome to the forum :) Glad you found us. I saw him being interviewed about the recording he was doing with the soldiers and thought how poorly he was looking. Then in the commentary they said he'd just come out of hospital and mentioned the inflammation. I guess it could be IBD but I'm no expert.
How are you doing? Have they got you on any meds?

Hi Grumbletum,

He may want to keep it private as his brother had something similar. It's a shame because you get newly diagnosed people like me wondering what it's all about, especially when its headline news. But, then you have to respect other peoples wishes to remain quite if they have been given an IBD diagnosis but don't want to talk about it fully.

I had my colonscopy on 18th August, and was put straight on Pentasa and steroids (8, 5mg steroids a day then reduced by 1, 5mg per week) I'm just on Pentasa now with supplements i.e. folic acid, cod liver oil, glutamine 500mg, calcium, vit D, probiotic acidophilus, and I'm feeling so much better, like I did before I was diagnosed.

(ps, love the name Grumbletum lol)

Glad to hear you are doing so well. It does take a while to get your head round a Crohns diagnosis. I can understand why he'd want to try to keep it quiet, at least for now. I only told close friends ( and of course my Crohns family here :) ) until I'd kind of digested the news myself.

When was you diagnosed? I can understand that as I had an assessment to become a disability student, and when she asked me if I would like her to let my lectures know, I said "No". I just needed that assessment in case I get a flare-up this year or during my exams ( to cover myself really).

Its hard to explain how I feel about my diagnosis. Your right, I'm just still getting my head round it I suppose. How are you finding- living with Crohn's?

Hi there :bigwave: I thought the same thing too! His brother died of a "twisted colon" and my uncle had that but lead to cancer. The youngest brother Andy Gibb died many years ago, and was also mysteriously kept quiet. Not sure if it was the same problem or drugs involved.

Twisted or blockages are the worst pain ever...been there a few times, didnt hesitate for a resection twice because that pain is what I fear most.

What meds are you on! Glad you are here!

Diagnosed in April last year. Like you, I was relieved to have a diagnosis after feeling very ill for 8 months. Then I think a bit of denial and also frustration when the meds didn't 'make it go away' immediately. I'm having my 3rd Infliximab infusion as we speak. Things have been so much better since I started on it 6 weeks ago.
I've got into a bit of a routine with foods, meds etc which helps.

Hi Pen,

Yeah, they have been keeping it quite. I've read that Robin has been suffering with stomach problems for years but they don't know what's causing it. But, when your twin suffers with something similar and has died, I would have thought they would have an idea of the condition.

He was on the Alan Titchmarsh show, and the paper said he doesn't want to go into his health problems. So, it seems like he wants to keep it private. Therefore, It goes back to the debate on whether Celebs can really have a complete private life, as some people think that they owe it to their concerned fans, or people with similar conditions to them. But, then I can understand when you want to recover that you wouldn't want it out in the open, who know??

I'm sorry to here about your Uncle, and that you have suffered terrible pain with your Crohn's. How are you doing now? I have been doing a bit of reading on Crohn's and (touch wood) have only experienced pain once in 3 months (which includes the month b4 diagnosis) . But, I can see that Crohn's disease is not clear cut and seem so uncertain, this is the main thing that worries me lol.

Hi Grumbletum, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with your med's, I hope with your new routine that it gets alot better for you.

I think the Bee Gees made a terrible mistake when they went Disco, other songs of theirs like "Words" and "Massachusetts" are much much better.

I have no opinion on on his colon though.

Poor guy looks very ill. Inflammation of the colon points to a type of IBD maybe. :(

He reminds me of what I saw in the mirror just after my ileo op. Not a great sight!

Realy hoping he can return to good health soon.

I don't know him but he looks really ill.

He seems to have lost a lot of weight, he honestly doesn't look like he only has crohn's or has not checked into a doctor for years. I have only seen such weight loss with people who use drugs (not judging, just saying) and get ill, crohn's patients usually look a bit "less sick". Even if a crohn's patient lost a lot of weight, they never tend to look this ill, or maybe it's just me, idk.

Yes, I know, he doesn't look very well. I think he was quite thin before he became ill, so I think thats why he looks so bad at the moment- I hope he gets through it.

Has your op made you feel any better, Gav? When my Dad had his bladder removed they used apart of his intestine to an outside pouch (stoma). He lost so much weight, but he told me that his consultant said, once your bowel is touched it suppresses your appetite for quite a while. I don't know how true that is as he said a few porkies so I wouldn't worry about him, lol.

Yes, Grumbletum, I like Jive talkin too and How deep is your love

Hi Pen, yes I know its not a nice thing to go into and the more I think about it, I wouldn't want to say either. I have not had my condition that long but I have noticed I'm changing as a person i.e. thinking about health issues more, and who I do and don't want to know.

Hi Kiny, I don't know anyone who has Crohn's so I can't compare, I was only thinking of the weight loss my Dad suffered when they mucked about with his intestine, but like i said before he used to tell me porkies about his condition.

I am probably older than most of you here , so I grew up in the "disco" era and was NOT a fan lol...I grew up with the Bee Gees.. my fave is and always will be is "Nights on Broadway:)
