what is heamoglobin and CRP in a blood test?

My husband is currently undergoing investigations for IBD or Crohns and has given a stool sample, had a coloscopy which didn't shown anything, he has been booked in for a flexible sy-something on thurs and also an abdominal scan. It all seems to be happening very quickley which is great but i am confused to what the bloods mean. He has a haemoglobin of 14.4 with a CRP of 52???? Our dr is great but he is soon to have his 3rd blood test and yet we still have no idea what these mean we are just told they are showing something is wrong? He has had stomach cramps and pain off and on for years now but its getting worse and he passes blood every day at the mo in his stools. He went to the drs last year and the did a scan which showed nothing so it was left. It comes in bouts prob 2-3 times a year but this time is bad and has had to work from home for nearly a month as commute to london in pain is too much.
We're now looking forward to getting some answers but just wondered if anyone could shed any light on what these blood results mean?

Haemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen around. If it is low, that is anaemia. 14.4 sounds like it is in the middle of the normal range, so nothing to worry about there.

CRP is c-reactive protein, which is something your body produces when there is inflammation. Normal is close to zero, your husband's CRP is elevated. So it indicates there is a problem in the body somewhere, but not where or what the problem is unfortunately.

Good luck with your husband's tests, and I hope you get some answers soon.

thank u

Thats great thank u i looked it up online and so had a vague idea that if high it would show a problem but had no idea if that was high or not and whether the figures were saying more than we were being told.
Fingers croseed for a diagnosis soon then we can start to hopefully make him feel better x x
Thank you x

I am sorry you hubby is dealing with this. I am thinking the test your hubby's doc wants him to do is a flexible sigmoidoscopy? is this right? I am confused by this. Your husband had a colonoscopy which if it did not show anything, why the heck would the doctor be doing a sigmoidoscopy?? Sounds fishy to me( money making). I have been chronically Ill for the last 9 years with a bunch of stuff. My C-reactive protein is elevated off and on and so is my sed-rate and I am on the anemic side as well (have been for years). I myself have not been Dx with anything yet, still going through the process as well. There are alot of things that can cause your hubbys symptoms. If all checks out clear with the gastro doc I would look into seeing a rheumatologist. Hope you get some answers and hubby starts to feel better too.
