And why do my grandparents keep trying to get me to drink it?

I'm aware that silver treatments were out back before we had antibiotics back in the 50's but during that time, they also thought that smoking was good for you. In the '90's, silver treatments went back on the market and became all the rage over the internets and fooled many people into buying and using them for cure all treatments where many people got sick (fever, Argyria (grey, blue to black skin that's permanent), and Gastroenteritis (a general word and a symptom of any condition, disorder or disease that causes irritation and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract).

Apparently Silver Sol is new and improved and treated with electricity and broken all the way down to the silver molecules... Well, technically you're still ingesting silver and can still get sick from it. It's sold as a supplement and the FDA doesn't allow them to claim to actually "cure" anything otherwise that particular brand gets pulled from the shelves.

Why is this stuff still being sold and why on Earth are people buying it? And more importantly, if it causes any gastrointestinal problems, why do my grandparents want me to drink it for my CROHN'S...

You guys don't use this stuff do you? If so, WHY?

Edit: Even the damn adds below are advertising silver products. WHY? Aren't the adds regulated on this site?

the only thing i've really heard about regarding taking silver internally is the story about a guy turning blue... it kinda put me off ever considering it myself. lol.

Hi Crabby. I don't know anything about this product per se, but I know I get all kinds of suggestions from people, who are just trying to help, but may not really have a good idea about what might help or hurt you. I usually just smile and nod, "I'll have to take a look at the label," or "ask my doctor," I'll say, but I do think they're just trying to help.

Just recently, I was completely wiped out, barely enough energy to wince, and in a lot of pain, and it was suggested that I just probably need a little exercise. And, people have suggested supplements and pain killers I know wouldn't be a good idea for me, but I have to believe they just want to help or think they're helping. Maybe this stuff is the answer to all our woes, and maybe not. I certainly wouldn't do anything without asking your doctor first.

Ya, the website isn't what I'm looking for cause its biased. Only thing that I found is that no real good comes out of ingesting silver. Its mixed with mostly water and I think for most people its giving them a placebo affect but not actually doing anything good.

And ya Dusty that's roughly the same thing cause all the silver treatments are pretty much the same, they just have different amounts of silver in them.

You're supposed to measure it and only take a certain amount per day but when I walked by my grandma's room, she was taking a swig out of the bottle. That's not measuring. :p The next day she had severe stomach upset and couldn't eat anything and felt nauseous. Were the two connected? I don't know but she's been taking this stuff for at least a year now and I bet she's been swigging out the bottle this whole time. I confronted her about it to make sure she wasn't taking more than what the bottle says and she said, "why would I do that when it costs twenty bucks a bottle?" Why are you drinking it anyway when you aren't even sick? I think its making her sick. Another shipment of the stuff came in the mail too. I wish she would stop taking it. I bet she gives it to my grandpa (who had a severe stroke recently and is still recovering) behind my back.

Silver has been proven to have antibacterial properties when applied topically (in plasters, they weave it into curtains in hospitals to help prevent infection spreading, and so on). But so has bleach.

Yes, we've progressed since the use of such products yet people try to make a buck off of people (especially the elderly) who know nothing about the product and don't care to do any research or don't know how.

Silver Sulfadiazine cream is still used as a wound dressing option when treating burns patients and I also use it to bring infection under control in heavy colonised leg ulcers.

It has one other use that you may or may not want to know about....... It is used to mask the smell of gangrene and it does work quite well.

Dusty. :)

I think it's one of things Crabby that the people who subscribe to it swear by it but the medical profession doesn't condone the use of silver orally.

Most websites that sell Colloidal Silver products state that it is effective against many ailments most notably things like - acne, allergies, arthritis, athlete’s foot, boils, burns, candida, cystitis, diabetes, eczema, hay fever, indigestion, parasitic infections, psoriasis, ringworm, warts, and yeast infections. I think the more reputable ones don't claim to cure disease but rather alleviate the symptoms.

Perhaps the reason your Grandparents are so adamant about it's use is that Silver preparations were widely used prior to the discovery of antibiotics and no doubt it was used for a variety of other ailments as well.

Dusty. :)

For those brave enough to try it, let me know if it works. I'm kind of scared of becoming a SMURF.

Its been out since the 50's and is still only sold as a supplement. I doubt it does any good to ingest it since so far its only showed harm, unless having a fever, having more stomach problems and being turned another color is your bag but there's no guarantee you'll turn blue. You may turn gray to black and just look like a corpse.

the only other thing i could find on it is from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloidal_silver

Personally it just sounds like a load of rubbish. Yes it can kill bacteria in the environment (like copper) but that doesnt mean it will kill only the bad bacteria if ingested.

That's a very good point. Could be one of the reasons why it can cause gastrointestinal problems. I'll be sure to talk more about it with my grandpa since he seems to actually listen.

"Silver and silver compounds have an oligodynamic effect and are toxic for bacteria, algae, and fungi in vitro." from the link above.

Our bodies contain good bacteria in the intestines so it would kill that off as well. This is some bad stuff. I hope no one on here drinks it.

My mom sent me a couple bottles of Sovereign Silver that I still am trying to get rid of, haha. I read up on colloidal silver and I was too worried to try it. I wasn't willing to risk turning blue either, haha. It sounds like one of those health scams.

Mom was trying to be helpful and give me "natural" stuff, but it's just a little to weird for me. I've been trying to give it away through my local FreeCycle group with no luck. I've had a few interests that never end up showing up to pick it up. Maybe they don't want to look like Smurfs either. ;)

Personally the ad at the bttom for me is regarding ostomy belts. But the site uses google ads which choose ads based upon what is written in the posts. They are very easy to manipulate.

I tried colloidal silver a few years back, felt no different for it, oh yeah, I had a little less money in my wallet.

Haha! I never even noticed the ads before. Thanks for pointing them out! lol

We're in the process of getting rid of the silver adds as ingesting silver is not good for you. If you see anymore you can report them to David, the Technical Administrator.
