I've just been diagnosed with crohns disease I was wondering is there a strict diet I should follow? the doctor never gave me any information on this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There is no IBD diet it's really trial and error to see what works for you. Try keeping a food log and symptom log to get a better handle on it.

Some foods to avoid are nuts, seeds, popcorn and anything with lots of insoluble fiber that could irritate your gut.

Afraid to say its a learning process it's different for everyone.a few basics though raw veggies, onions, greasy food, salad stuff generally can be bad so treat with caution.veggies well cooked or blended in soup are generally ok.alcohol wise beer, lager try it in the house in case of disaster.i,m fine with fish, beef, pork, potatoes, carrots, peas.i,m try to reintroduce salads and coleslaws back into my diet I miss them.
Cheers all the best
P.s melon is a huge trigger food for crohns 1slice marked my soul

It is important to quit smoking and ask your doc about alcohol. I think it depends on whether you are in remission or have a flareup. During a flareup, you try very hard to avoid bothering the inflammed area so stick to soft, low fiber foods. In remission, you can eat anything as long as you don't feel pain. The only thing I can't eat is nuts, seeds and popcorn as they scrape against the damaged tissue. There is a long of anecdotal evidence and talk about different diets that can help with Crohn's but no real proof so far. It is important to make sure you are getting all your vitamins and minerals as there can be absorption problems if you have damage in your gut. I have to take sublingual B12 and calcium and a multivitamin in liquid form. good luck!

I've never smoked but drink the occansional beer which does affect me, I take quite a lot of supplements daily to give me a boost such as b12, magnesium, vitamin a, calcium, sea kelp, milk thistle and biotin.

As far as diet I try to eat healthy the main thing I found which affect me are nuts, sugar and wheat. I'm guessing everything could affect Crohn's disease so it's difficult to know what things to cut out.

Thanks for all the information I will have a read.

This is exactly what I would say, except I would add a warning that keeping a food/symptom diary is a lot harder than it sounds. There are many factors that affect symptoms besides diet - mostly ones we don't even know about. The effects of food can be delayed, and your symptoms might react to your overall diet rather than individual foods. So even if it seems that a particular food is causing a symptom, you have to be patient and see if the reaction is consistently occurring before drawing any conclusions.

Yeah I would agree with this there are many factors affecting my health and even though food may affect me on a paticular day it might not affect me on another. so I've found myself.

Totally agree with everyone, it all depends on you. for weeks I kept thinking about what is the best diet but know if I can eat it and tolerate it with no pain or toilet visits I will eat it. I have recently been on a low-residue diet plan for 4 weeks and found that ok. It's strange though the other week I couldn't eat a banana without feeling sick or having trapped wind, but know I'm ok it has to be really ripe though. If your going to try anything make sure your at home, just in case. Good luck XXX
