Hi - as you can guess from my user name, my daughter (Ali) has Crohn's. She was first diagnosed in 2009 with Ulcerative Colitis, and when she moved from the hospital that treats children to the hospital that treats adults her diagnosis was changed to Crohn's. She has been on Salofalk (didn't help), Salofalk & Imuran (didn't help), Prednisone (helped but horrible side effects) & Mezavant (helped). She was fine and doing well until a week ago when she came down with what we thought was the flu. She was admitted to the hospital - they thought she might have c-difficile. They never did figure out what exactly happened, but they suspect she had some type of bug and it progressed to a flare. Now they want to put her on Remicade because her Crohn's is severe. She rarely has pain, blood in stool or looks sick - I swear if one more doctor tells me "but she looks well" - I will be tempted punch them! This last illness was really tough - she was so sick. I pray that the Remicade works.
Ali and I have been wondering what other people's experience with diet has been. We have been told that milk products, red meat, raw veggies and spicy foods tend to aggravate Crohn's. Ali has not been keen on changing her diet (could be due to her age, reluctance to be different, love of food or all of the above) but is now willing to try if it will increase the odds that she will never be that sick again (a long shot I know).
Thanks for having this forum - the support of others who live with Crohn's is so important.
