Where'd My Bellybutton go?!

So, I just had a couple of resections done a couple of days ago and have been in the hospital in horrible pain ever since. It's getting a bit better now and I'm able to tolerate the pain and sleep and even walk around a bit... But this morning, the doctor came in and took the dressing off of my scar and what I saw scared the living daylights out of me! The scar goes right down the center of my belly and comes up to just about where my bellybutton should be.

But that's the problem, it WASN'T THERE. There was just a hideous looking, half-half healed scar, held together with staples where my bellybutton should be. It seemed like all that remained was half of an indent where it used to be. Do I really not have a bellybutton anymore?! Is it normal for a surgical incision to mess with my bellybutton? I'm kind of freaking out, because I don't want to just have an awful looking scar and a weird indent where my bellybutton used to be. I don't want to be that weird guy without a bellybutton that everyone looks at funny when I take my shirt off at the swimming pool.

I mean, I know it's probably a better alternative to having all the other stuff that was wrong with me... But man, oh MAN, did they seriously take out my bellybutton along with 6 inches of my small bowel and my appendix?!

Will it? The scar looked like it pretty much covered it entirely and all that was there was an indent that was half scar, half skin... If it does come back, will it look the same as it did? Sorry, this is like really, really bothering me for some reason and I'm freaking out a lot more than I probably should.

Once the swelling goes down, and you heal up it should be ok. It may be slightly scarred, but it will still be there!

I understand your worries. The same thing happened after my surgery. It comes back, it may not be exactly the same but it will be back. I had this weird glue stuff - no staples.

Mine is shaped a little different now and the scar puckers in about an inch above it. Kinda looks like two belly buttons.

Hope you heal quickly!

Funnily enough, someone at work asked my if I still have mine after laporoscopic surgery. Well, I do, but it is tiny now compared to before. And it's just a hole rather than a sort of whorly design, if you know what I mean!

The next time you talk to your doctor you need to all him if he removed it or not. I had my belly button removed with out my knowledge about 2 years ago (its never coming back). In all honesty I think its cool, it makes me different. I've even thought about getting one tattooed on to be funny. I know your having a hard time dealing with it right now, but if it is gone forever, you can always have a plastic surgeon make one for you
