Devynn (almost 11 and diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, crohns has not been ruled out) has been having on and off pain in her tummy for the past two days. Today it made her cry, and when she cries I know it hurts. A few hrs later she had a bm that looked kind of white, almost chalky. She said she felt fine, and her tummy was find. Then an hour or so later she said she felt like she had to have a bm, but was constipated. Any ideas? I will keep a very close eye on her and we will not hesitate to go to the dr or emerg if necessary.
Thank you in advance,

Has she had any meds or a barium study done lately? I know barium used in x-ray comes out looking exactly like that.

Well I was going to ask about the barium xray as well. The only other thing I had heard about was white/chalky stool can be a sign of obstruction of bile flow into the intestine. Worth getting checked out if it continues. Hope she is ok and it resolves without a trip to the doctor :ysmile:

My little Grace had the same thing. Sascot is right. My GI nurse said if she has more than one, I NEED to call and let them know. I guess it can be also a sign of other liver or gallbladder problems. AGAIN the nurse said to me at least more than one stool. Your DD might be different.
Keep us updated!

She had a new pain earlier today. It was a stabbing pain on the left side, around the bottom of her rib cage. I called her dr who is on vacation until the beginning of Sept. They have ordered blood work, so I am taking her in tomorrow (Tues). The nurse I spoke to (not her nurse, her nurse is also on vacation) said that once they get the results they will decide if they need to do u/s or anything. She also said if anything changes, come right in to emerg. She seemed ok most of the day though.

She's never had a CT. She's had colonoscopy, endoscopy, barium swallow, blood, ultrasounds.. never a CT though. She hasn't complained of feeling bloated, but her appetite isn't great.

It's odd they did a barium swallow and not a full Fluoroscopy. I would ask for a CT scan to make sure she is not having obstruction symptoms with that pain on the left side, white stools and constipation.

No, all these tests were in the past. They said depending on the results of the blood work, they may do more tests. She mentioned ultrasound.

Hi. I have had those milky, white looking bowel movements in the past! I was diagnosed with lesions in my lower left bowel (or mild crohns)! The specialist said my bowel movements will range from normal too milky white to yellow and green! He has been correct as I have think at points I have had the full rainbow of colours coming out! Pro biotics, Omega 3 and if pain is bad manuka honey (15+) work for me. But then again I only have mild Crohns...Or so they say lol.

Oh and drink green tea with honey as well as it reduces any inflammation. All of this has helped me manage it without drugs!

Thank you Stevonymo, she has mild ulcerative colitis and they have not ruled out crohns. She has never had a bm like this one before. I will look in to the green tea with honey, thank you! She really likes tea, but only drinks it on rare occasions, because she's only 10. I will def look in to it though! :)

Yes green tea is wonderful for the bowel. Just ensure it cools and drink it warm, I leave the tea bag in and put plenty of honey in for taste as green tea can be bitter. If you really want to help heal lesions/ulcers then manuka honey in the tea works wonders but is expensive. You can read about manuka honey on loads of web sites. Hope the little one improves, as this is bad enough for a big guy like me never mind a little girl!

Thank you Stevonymo, she has blood work and everything was *normal* so they are doing an ultrasound next week.

I hope you get some answers at the ultrasound! And I hope she's feeling a bit better! :ghug:

Good luck with the ultrasound hun. I hope it gives you solid answers! :goodluck:

Dusty.
