I have a complex cyst on my left ovary right now and had my right ovary and fallopian tube removed 18months ago due to endometrosis. Around that time I was also diagnosed with Crohn's and had a horrible flare. So Im hoping everything will go well. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Mary.
I had an outpaitent vaginal hysterectomy last Feb and did not flare. I stopped my Lialda while I was on the narcotic pain relievers, which are very constipating. Worked like a charm. I weaned myself off the pain relievers as quickly as possible to get back to my "Crohnie normal" digestion and jumped back on the Lialda bandwagon. I think it was about 4 days. That was for the least invasive surgery though. There is a wonderful online group called hystersisters.com that has lots of of helpful hints on what to expect and what you can do to prepare yourself prior. Also lots on the different types of surgeries they do.
I came down with a nasty case of Asthmatic bronchitis less than 2 weeks post op, which threw a real wrench into my recovery...so total recovery time was way off for me.
My Dr gave strict instruction to do no housework for 8 weeks...
Liked that part.
Good luck Mary...and don't forget to pamper yourself.

I had an abdominal hysterectomy 5 years ago due to a cantaloupe-sized fibroid in my uterus. My surgeon gave me an IV of 300 mg of Pred and an IV antibiotic during the surgery, and no flare and no infection at the incision! I recovered in 8 weeks right on the nose.

I went to Hystersisters, too-really helped me so much! Those ladies are great!

Narco pain-killers caused me brutal constipation for sure. I couldn't go for 4 days after. My GI came in with a pack of classic blue label Trident gum, there's something in the artificial sweetner that wakes up the bowel, and the act of chewing also gets things moving-sounds crazy but worked great!

Walk as much as you can as soon as you can, that helps too. You'll probably have ALOT of gas-don't try to hold it in, just let 'er rip and you'll get better faster. No gassy foods, low residue veggies, nothing greasy or rich. Also, a nurse recommended to ask for Zofran and you won't be sick from anethesia, also eat light two days prior, and just drink liquids the day prior. She said alot of people are sick after surgury because they eat a prime rib meal the night before, and it just sits in there for days after the surgury til you go to the bathroom.

Everything will be fine Sweetie-after what we go through with Crohn's a hysterectomy doesn't seem so bad, trust me. And no more monthly nightmares-Yay!

Thanks everyone...so scared of this...dont like things growing inside of me and dont really know what they r. Ugh another mountain to climb...

Aw Mary...try not to be scared. Think of it as a part of your body that is sick and the surgery will make it better... kinda like a really big wart being removed. In my case the surgery took a lot of pressure off both my bladder and my colon which resulted in much less discomfort for me. It was a very good thing.

Are you having the procedure done laparoscopically? I was supposed to have a hysterectomy last summer, but chickened out because my CRP level was high. My OB-GYN assured me that I would be fine anyway, but I was still adjusting to the Crohn's diagnosis and it was just too much for me. I wish I had just done it and got it over with. Like Joni said, the doctor thought having that pressure off my bladder and colon would be a good thing. I have to wait for the summer since I'm a teacher, but I'm going for it in June. My doctor swears that it's no big deal either way, but that the laparoscopic approach will certainly be no problem for me with Crohn's. Spoken like a man of course. LOL

Hi Mary...I had a hysterectomy in 2009 because of endometreosis and although my chrohns wasnt diagnosed then, I knew something was wrong but the doctors thoght it was all tied in with the endo because i had extensive adhesions on the bowel, bladder etc. It all went really smoothly and I would say although it was sore for a while, the pain was certainly nothing major. The only real discomfort came when I needed a BM which is understandable cos everything is tender in that area. It only become worse when the pain meds, particularly codeine made me constipated so having something to counteract this effect is worthwhile. Other than that dont worry you'll be fine and the end result of no more painful periods is bliss! and one less thing to deal with.

I am having it laparascopically unless they find something suspicious on my ovary or endo is all over. Ugh now I have a cold hope I get over it by then. Thanks you so much everyone for all the great support...it means alot to me.

Hi Mary,
Wishing you the very best of luck for both the surgery and recovery.
Please take care, and make sure you take time out to fully recover.
All the best,
Andrea x
