Worried about Surgical Prep

Hi all,

I'm having my first surgery in a few weeks (laparoscopic resection of my terminal ileum), and my surgeon has prescribed a regular bowel prep (Gatorade/miralax), but they've also prescribed the Nichols Prep on top of that, which is 6 doses of antibiotics the night before surgery WHILE I am doing the colon prep.

Has anyone done this before? The regular prep makes me nauseous enough, without adding a ton of antibiotics on top of that. Normally I need to take antibiotics AFTER I eat, to ensure that I won't get nauseous. I'm really nervous about this. I was thinking about calling the surgeon to see if they'll prescribe me some anti-nausea meds to have just in case.

On top of the concerns, I'll be doing the prep in a hotel, as my surgery is 3 hours from home. Any thoughts on how to handle the combination of prep and antibiotics would be helpful...

Just know you're going to be miserable! I had a radical hysterectomy this summer for my endometriosis and the prep was horrendous. My lovely wonderful husband made sure to bring my flare up favorites (wipes, jar of coconut oil, and tons of puzzle magazines plus Chapstick) and set me up in the bathroom. I'm hoping you're not going to be alone in your hotel and will have someone there to wait on you! My surgeon did allow anti nausea meds and my daily meds during prep. They also opted to do intravenous antibiotics after I talked with the surgical nurse. I hope all goes well for you! Do call the surgical nurse and get nausea meds ok'd!

I wonder if you really need the prep? I had the same surgery 3 years ago. They told me at 3pm that they could operate the next day and I had to fast from then, but no prep. It might be worth asking your surgeon.

I also didn't need to prep for my resection. I did think that was a little odd but I didn't question it!
All I had to do was stop eating anything around 10 hours before the op.

I don't remember prepping for my resection. I was pretty limited in my diet because of s blockage and because I had a bad reaction to TPN. Wishing you the best.
