Would you call the GI?

Hey there!

So here goes. I started on amoxicillin last wednesday (only 4 doses left! Thank god!) for a gum infection. The amoxicillin has been super hard on my stomach. I've had nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. None of this is particularly concerning to me as I have trouble with antibiotics in general and these side effects are known to happen with this medicine. What is concerning to me, and what doesn't seem to be a normal side effect (at least that I can find anywhere) is what started happening Thursday night. After a particularly painful bowl movement in the middle of the night, I woke up with blood and I think pus/mucus on my underwear the next morning. Since than, I've noticed some kid of drainage coming from my bottom at different points everyday. Its not an excessive amount. It is not leaking onto my underwear anymore, I just sort of feel it happening and clean it up with a wipe or toilet paper. I've also seen mucus before bowel movements as well a few times. I've never experienced anything like this before. It started happening right after I started the amoxicillin which makes me think its related, but the doctor that prescribed the amoxicillin is a dentist, so I don't know how much help he would be. Plus, if it isn't related to the drug, it probably is related to my Crohn's. So I guess my question would be, is this something you would call your GI about? I just saw him last Tuesday actually, but none of this was happening than.

Otherwise, I guess I should mention that my bottom is very sore and I do have pain when I go to the bathroom. Its not that bad currently, but this weekend it was awful. Lasted for hours after I had a bowl movement. I have experienced that before though, but I had been doing much better as of late.

Med wise I'm currently on: 35 mg of prednisone, 25 mg injection of methotrexate, folic acid, prevacid, and iron. Supposed to be adding Cimzia soon.

Yes I would call. There doesn't seem to be any downside to calling, and this is something new that's not normal. You should let him or her know.

Yeah your right. I had to talk to them about my new medication and insurance issues, so while I did that I left a message for him. He'll get back to me soon.

You should definitely call your GI any time bleeding occurs. Even when you have possible causes, they are better able to determine the cause for certain than you are.

I hope things get better soon!

He got back to me and wants to wait and see. When I finish the antibiotic, if this is still occurring, I'm to call back.
