i started 6mp yesterday, and i feel like crap litterly.. last night i had maybe 1 hour sleep, my back was hurting and my tummy was hurting. i feel achy all over especially in my ankles for some reason. i havent felt like im coming down with any cold or anything but man im so tired.. i was gonna try it out tonight again and sunday and see if i does better, but i think im gonna be asking doctor to put me back on pentasa.. can anyone tell me how long they delt with the side effects before they decided it was to much for them? i have a baby to take care of so me feeling this way i wont be able to take care of him for very long.

I was on 6mp for about a week and I had upper pain and I knew it was affecting me, it was during the holidays and by the 5th day I stopped taking them. A few days later my Gi called me and told me to go off them, told him I already did. Not sure a day would affect you but there are so many flu bugs going around. Pentasa is for mild cases and if you think they worked better, I would ask your doctor too. Looking after a baby is hard enough. :hang:

Thanks for your response, this is the second day I'm on it and omg what a difference. I feel great, I slept all night last night, and no pains what's so ever. I have energy, but not as much as I had when I was on 40mg of pred, but alot better than Saturday.. I had 2 bm and they were normal yayy, but Monday I'm still gonna call the doctor and ask them to do a blood test on me sooner than when they want to so my mind will be ateast till I know what meds I'll be on long term. I'm still worried about long term effect of this drug on my body but it does feel good to be able to go through the day with no pain

Hey that is great no pain!! I have some of those days too. Awesome arent they. But I would check it out too.

day 3 not doing good today, woke up with my tummy hurting and i think its from dropping the prednisone. i dont no why my body keeps reacting everytime i lower the dose but i dont want to keep going back on the higer dosage at all. im feeling fustrate like my body doesnt want to get better at all. i know it takes months for the 6mp to really start working in my system but i wish the pentasa would do something atleast till the 6mp kicks in.. i just really cant do the prednisone at 40 anymore i am getting bad head aches and i just dont funtion well on it..

sigh i dont no what to do, if to call the doctor or ride this out and see what happens at the end of the week. the thing is i dont no if i can take care of me or my son if this gets worst than what it is now.. the pain is about a 6 right now and its not a constant pain, it comes on and off so i do get some breaks in it where i can deal with my son..

just wish i can get a break, so tired of dealing with this now

6-MP can take anywhere between as early as 2 months to as late as 6 months to start taking full effect. As a result, your prednisone taper has to be much slower, maybe only 5 mg at a time every 2-3 weeks.

6-MP has to build up in your system and this take some time. Be patient and taper slow.

also, the symptoms may last for a certain period of time but most of them pass. Just make sure you are getting labs every 1-2 weeks to check your liver function and White blood cell count. The medication may have some side effects that would be more detrimental to you if you continued to take the medication. These labs help your doctor determine that.

I had some pretty annoying side effects (abdominal pain, aches, horrendous fatigue, and nausea) when i first started taking 6-mp but they passed after the second or third week - so it DOES get better.

That being said, if you're having pain in your upper right abdomen (i.e. your liver/pancreas), you should definitely get it checked out, as it could be a sign of a toxic allergic reaction

Some people find that taking it in the evening with food helps. This way they sleep through the side effects.

I agree, it can take time to work and if you taper your pred too fast you will just feel like crap.

ive been on 6mp for 4mnths now and no probs,im tapering down the preds at 1mg per wek, take it slowly and you should be fine, hope everything works out ok

hi everyone, thanks for the replies, i am moving my 6mp to 1 full pill at the end of the week which is i think 50 mg and suppose to drop my prednisone to 30mg at the same time but doctor told me if i feel like my body isnt ready keep at 35 mg for another week till i feel comfortable and then taper to 30 mg..

i havent had any bad side effects yet from the 6mp but im praying it doesnt change once i up the meds.. on the right hand since theres a little ting of pain nothing huge but i dont no if thats from the 6mp or from my monthly.. but if it doesnt go away in a few days ill call the doctor about it

I hope upping your meds and tapering off pred only makes you feel better.

And I agree, keep track of your pain and if it keeps up or gets any worse, I would phone your doctor. Better safe than sorry!

thanks jill, yeah me to im hoping it will hurry and get better i want my life back, i want to be able to be with my son and not be in pain every 5 seconds.. i dont want him remembering this part of mummy being in pain and crying all the time because of it.. this sucks i hope they find some cure for this..
