Does anyone know the link for accutane to IBD? I am just curious...I took it about 30 years ago..OMG now you probably know how old I am!!! But, with kids in puberty I am wondering what the connection is? Is there already a link or a post on it? Sorry if I am repatative...Sue

I never took it and did get crohns. My older sister did take it and didn't get crohns if that helps any. Not good scientific results, but good anecdotal evidence at least.

vitamin A

I've been wondering about this. I took it TWICE and have SOMETHING at least IBD LIKE which began about 20 years after the last Accutane & remains to get an official diagnosis. A recent test result may be relevant. Extremely LOW blood Beta Carotene, vitamin A (Accutane is a retinoid and of course related to vitamin A).

If you're like me, before taking Accutane you probably took long courses of just about every class of oral antibiotic under the sun, most of which messed with my gut in one way or another. That could also be an issue.

I took it as well.
There was a thread around here somewhere talking about the law suits going on in the US right now because of it causing crohns

Interesting. I just called my old dermotologist in another state to get copies of my records. He's about 70 now, I'm lucky he's still practicing.

Its been about ... mmm 27 years..since I took it...I did not have to take many classes, just had to talk to a nurse. I have a daughter who has acne...and I don't think I will let her take it...I don't know what the connection is, but I did call one of the law offices, they said I couldn't join in...and really I am not interested in joining in...it is what it is...what I want is the information of the connection. I just think we have the disposition to get it...something ignites and and bamm we get it. When I started with my issues...my whole family had some stomach bug...they got better and I didn't...MMMmmm, wondering....Sue

Sue - I'm not sure you were posting this just for knowledge or in deciding if your kids will ever take Accutane. But, I wanted to say I had bad acne starting my sophomore year in high school - like cystic acne. And I had lots of friends taking topical medications like Accutane. My mom and I decided to go the holistic route. I got deep cleansing facials with extractions every month and by my junior year I didn't need them anymore. Now I just use tea tree oil products on my face and while I still break out occasionally I haven't had cystic acne since then. Just wanted to put that out there :)

interesting...

I wasn't aware Accutane cames as a topical ointment. I thought it was just a pill.

I briefly saw a dermatologist as a teen. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember what I was prescribed. It was indeed a topical cream.

I took Accutane for many months. I am still currently awaiting a colonoscopy to diagnose for sure, but the Dr. is suspecting Crohns.... I think there is probably some connection with the Accutane and my stomach problems, considering nobody in my family has Crohns, UC, etc. But only God knows- one of those mysteries of life

I took Accutane when I was in my teens (about 15 years ago) and now have Crohn's. I just recently learned about the suspected link between Accutane and Crohn's and it worries me that something I took could have caused my Crohns

Thanks dreamintwighlight...I am going to look into that for her...She is very young to be going through this...but, you get what you get...and don't throw a fit :) So, I like the holistic idea...Do you know what kind of facials you did with your mom? Sue

Sue - I can't remember what mine was called exactly, but I remember I had extractions, which was very important. It's just like what it sounds like, but it's good for people with acne because it provides a safer and better way to "pop" pimples without the risk of scarring and spreading the infection. It also involved a mist and 2 different masks. One that felt like it was exfoliating and then a soothing one at the end that relieved any inflammation from the extractions or otherwise. I found a link that describes different types of facials. The one I got sounds a lot like the acne facials on the page.

When I went in for the first time she looked at my face and kind of decided from there what treatment I should get. So, it may depend on how severe your daughter has it and things like that. But, hopefully it gives you an idea on what to look for :) I would say extractions were the biggest help for me. I had such clogged pores (even though I cleaned my face all the time) that it helped to have a professional clean them out with products that healed my skin rather than irritate it even more like so many store products tend to do (ie Oxy pads!!).

I think spa technicians can be certified in holistic care too, so maybe ask for the persons credentials too :) I will try and find some of the product names I went home with when I get home from the doctor's. They're going to be more expensive, of course than your typical product. But probably no more so than going to the dermatologist would and I would say if they help then you won't have to use as mjuch in the long run :) Let me know what you find out!

Whoa!!! I remember back in the early 70's putting some sort of topical stuff on my face, I think it was called Retin-A and it burned my face but had to keep on using. I then was on an antibiotic at the same time. This could be Pre-accutane years. Just a thought

Yes, I believe I had a friend in middle school who used Retin-A. I remember she was constantly carrying a mirror and lotion around with her because her face was constantly peeling.

I worked for a dermatologist a few years back and work for a clinic now that has 3 derm docs. We have a lot of patients on accutane. I wouldn't take it if you paid me. I'll ask one of my favorite docs if she's heard about this connection. I think she'll be honest and educated on the subject. When I saw her for a mole check she mentioned my risk of skin cancer is increased because of Humira.

I'll try to get back to you with some info.

Interesting topic. What about those of us who never took it?

Hi everyone

I don't know what Accutane is, and have never took it,
but I got Crohns anyway!

xx

Sue, if you decide not to use Accutane for your kids, I know of a really good acne med that helped me a lot when I was younger. I still use it now, although not as much as when I was about 13-18. It's a facial cream called Benzaclin. Let me know if you want more details. :)
