Hi Everyone
I have had Crohn's disease now for 20 years this November. For the last 7 I have taken 150mg azathioprine, I have a flu vaccination every autumn. I am generally well most of the time, I swim and walk regularly but am incredibly tired most of the time, I know I push myself too hard. I suffer from sore throats a lot and for weeks/months at a time especially through the winter months. I live in the UK so its cold a lot! I had this before I started taking the azathioprine. I have given up trying to reason why as I blame most things on Crohn's!. Has anyone else suffered similar? I don't know anyone else with the disease, I find it can be a bit of a lonely disease in this way as no one around me really understands what your body is going through.
I have told every health professional I have ever dealt with about this and been examined etc but no one can tell me why my throat is so red and sore. Sore throat remedies don't work, then totally out of the blue it's gone...... Literally overnight? It's ok at the moment but I know it'll be back, is this a side effect of Crohn's? When I was first diagnosed I was very ill mainly due to the fact I didn't ask for help for a long time and my mouth was full of sores and ulcers by the time I was admitted into hospital. I have heard it can effect your mouth/throat area but my Gastroenterologist doesn't think it's anything to worry about.

I did have this when I first started azathioprine. I was told to alert my doctor if that happens as it can be a sign of low white blood cells, but everything was fine when checked! I'm sure if this was the cause for you then it would have been picked up on. I hope you get an answer soon!

HI
Yes I have my blood tested every 8 weeks, like clockwork, not once in the 7 years of being on aza have my bloods come back with anything to worry about.

Do you have any other symptoms with the sore throats? Swollen glands, sinus problems, etc.? I'm assuming you've been checked for reflux? I've been on proton pump inhibitors for over ten years to control my reflux (taking Dexilant at the moment). Every once in a while I'll wake up with an unbearably sore throats which I know is due to the reflux and take a fast acting antacid like Gaviscon which helps. Just a thought.

I had a sore throat from acid reflux that caused heartburn and puking several times a day for a whole year. About three years ago now. I was throwing up from it though so it seems different from what you are experiencing. I never did get to the bottom of it. It finally just went away on its own.

I hope you get answers soon,

cmack

Hi
I don't really have any other symptoms. Crohns in general is well under control. My bloods are all good, occasionally I get indigestion. It's all very odd.

Charlotte,

This whole disease is very complicated and unpredictable. It is all very odd isn't it?
Just when you think you have it figured out then comes a curve ball.

all the best,

cmack

One thing I do know is that Crohn's can manifest as inflammation all the way from your mouth to the bottom end. Could even be the cause of a sore throat I suppose. I hope it gets better soon. I'm not a big fan of having a sore throat either.

I have acid reflux without any chest pain or vomiting etc. I found out when one night I got reflux up my nose. I'm a nose breather. Dang did that sting. I don't take anything for it, but elevated the head of my bed, and try not to eat late at night. It's helping.
I forgot to mention, yes I've had a sore throat for months.

have you had a consultation with an ear-Nose-throat dr?
Its been 3 years in am stuck with a minor throat problem called granular pharyngitis. It started during the winter time right after a flare... Its a chronic inflammation of the pharynx. When I look with a flash light in my throat, we can see little bumps in my pharynx and general redness. With the ENT dr, we investigated all possible causes, including GERD, allergies, but nothing... Being a CD patient with oral mucosa issue was not a surprise for the ENT dr... But this was nothing my GI had seen before. Hydration of throat and having a humidificator during the winter is a must. Condition worsen in the winter time with dryness. Nose cleaning as well with sea salt solution as well, twice a day (spray bottle). these were the recommendations by my ENT dr. Hydration is really key with this condition. It helps and reduced the inflammation and discomfort in my throat, but not entirely unfortunately.

I have bumps in my mouth from Crohn's. Unfortunately it's one long tube and we can have and I have had issues throughout the whole thing.

ENT is important to see as you may need a dose of steroids if it is effected.

Cheers
