Asacol tabs in stool

So im taking Asacol and prilosec right now, and when i have a stool i see the asacol tabs lol, is that because it is going to be too fast or is that just what happens?

That's probably just the shell casing, they keep their shape when they pass through. If you grab one out you'll see it is empty. Fun project for this afternoon, huh? Report back with your findings!

I thought they were coming out too when I took Asacol. My GI said the same thing at MBH. I never fished them out. Probably should have just so I could know once and for all. You never know I could be wondering about it years from now!

As much as it would gross me out to do so myself, I advise going fishing. An acquaintance of mine told me his body actually became intolerant of asacol and started passing the tablets whole. There's no sense in putting $200 worth of medicine down your gullet every month if your body isn't making use of it.

i agree too brad, go fishing!! you have to!
then youll know for sure that its just the shells. if its not for some reason, then its important to know that your meds are getting where they need to be.

hey, eventually you dont even care anymore. ive had to touch and clean up poo so many times, digging into a toilet (provided its mine of course) barehanded wouldnt be that offensive to me lol

You will have to fish it out and see. My doc told it was just the shells of the Lialda passing but when I fished them out it was the whole pill. The pill didn't break down at all. How else will you ever know? Atleast it is yours.uke_r:

True ..Ive done it and sometimes its just the shell or a pill...but I take the generic make now and it seems to work well..my body is weird.

Asacol is a topical pill specifically designed to be released/absorbed when it gets into the colon, so what you are seeing in the toilet is the shell casing. Nothing to be concerned with. However if it looks like the casing never opened and the pill is still in it's whole shape, it would be worth mentioning to your GI to see if your body is accepting the medication properly.

When I was on Asacol I too passed pills. I never fished them out, but mentioned it to my GI. Since I've been put on Pentasa (by a different GI) I've never seen any pills come through me. No matter what, I too advise mentioning it to your GI.

Indeed it's often the casing as they are time release. Although one time I saw one fizzing in the toilet. Maybe it thought the toilet needed some treatment too. No need to go fishing in that case.

Advice from the manufactures package insert

"Inform patients that intact, partially intact, and/or tablet shells have been reported in the stool. Instruct patients to contact their physician if this occurs repeatedly."

it happened with me bradraz and it wasn't casing it was the actual tablets .. and after a complication my doctor stopped it for me.

i had a colonoscopy on tuesday and was watching the scope on the wee monitor and seen the asacol tablet in my gut.....
