azathioprine

i'm starting azathioprine just wanted to know what's ur experience with it guys?

Hi there, I found it helpful for a long time, I ended up on 200mg a day and for over year I didn't have a single day off sick from work. Eventually it caused problems with my white cell count but this is a reaction I had and everyone's different so don't worry that this may happen to you. Personally I would say of all the medications I have been on so far this was the best.

I have been on aza for about three and a half years - since I was diagnosed.
Its really good for my symptoms, but I have an enzyme deficiency which means I cant tollerate a high dose. And I have also had problems with my white blood cell count, so I had to come off it for a while and then get back on it slowly. I am on 40mg now, I was on 50mg before.
I don't think I will be on it for much longer - white blood count still seems to be up and down. But I will be sad to let it go if the time comes to try something new.

I have been on aza since April of this year and I have had no problems with it. I actually was at my Gi appt just the other day and he says all my blood tests look really good. It helps with my symptoms, but it does not help 100%. I still have smaller cankers(which is how my Crohn's symptoms started) and still some cramps, but it makes my days ok and easy to get through.

I'm on it and I had side effects for the first month, including horrible heartburn. Maalox really helped with that (I always keep a bottle in the fridge for taste) and taking it immediately after dinner also helped. After around 30 days, I no longer had a problem. Good luck!!

thank u so much:) it's nice to read all these positive comments about the drug :)i was a bit concerned good luck 2 all of u and i wish u all the best :)

If you get a bit queesy from it you can split your dose half am half pm. Or taking it before bed may help too. Good luck! I hope it works well for you

I've been on it for over 20 years with no side effects. Dosage was mostly 75mg/day but was upped to 200 mg/day earlier this year.

I've been on it for 9 weeks with no improvement yet. I'm giving it another month before quitting. Blood test shows I'm at a therapeutic level, so my dosage (100mg) is correct.

i had the worst experience with this drug. i got bumps and rashes on my legs/shins, my knees became so painful that i could not walk and was crying, i had a high fever, nausea/vomiting, stomach pain. pretty much all of the bad reactions you could think of. my doctor tried me on it twice i had the same reaction both times. it sucked. i hope it works much better for you then it did for me.

I'm eating azathioprine 150 mg per day and I haven't noticed any side effects. I've been eating it since the early 2010.

Have you had a TPMT blood test to see if you have the enzyme needed to metabolise the drug?

Both of my children are on Azathioprine. They have not had any side effects from it and they are both in remission, following surgery.

I hope it works well for you too! Good luck!

Been on Aza for over a year now. Nausea and fatigue are the main side effects I get on a persistent basis. Splitting the dose between morning and evening helped a lot. I started at 175 mg and had to keep lowering the dose since the WBC was to low. I am now at 100mg.

Didn't really help with my peri-anal(fissures and fistula) issues so I went on Remicade last Aug. So now I think the main reason I am on it is to help not reject the Remi.

Was a good drug for me, It kept my symptoms at bay and i was pretty well until unfortunately it started lowering my white blood cell count to much and I eventually had to stop taking it. it takes a while to get in your system and made me feel a bit sick at first though until i got used to it.
