Bladder, Kidneys and IBD

Have any of your kids have problems with their bladder and kidneys?
If it was caused by their IBD what was the problems?

Grace has an emergency ultra-sound and MAYBE CT scan because she is urinating every 5-15 minutes around the clock and this morning I think she passed a stone (couldn't get to it before it drifted down the pipe).
Her urine sample came back HIGH in protein and WBC counts.

So off to the hospital we go. :confused2:

I've already called the GI and the nurse will let the doc know, she has blood in her stool now. I just pray their not connected.

Hi farm wife you need to have a look at the post Niks has posted, thikening of duodenum, her daughter is passing kidney stones, looked it up and bowel inflamation can cause stone formation as can bladder infections. hope this helps

We're back. Thank GOD we live close to the hospital. In and out an now we wait.
Doc wants to see her tomorrow. I guess I'll find out more.

BTW she has no pain really. This morning she did with passing the stone but that's it.


This seems like it happens with ever flare. I think it's linked and always have
but ALL the docs blow it off.

Did they dip urine for infection? J's was negative but positive for blood.
She has antibiotics just in case but really no better!!

Yes Niks, she had the test which showed infection (high protein and WBC) but..............

Problem solved! Gave her her first full enema and you guest it...................................

Poo'ed a lot, then pee'ed a river. The most urine I've seen in awhile.

So constipation is to blame. I think????

I wonder that about J too. Our girls are similarly in many ways but your poor J is a lot worse.
It was brought up to us at the beginning of this never ending journey that maybe mobility is some of her issues.
We just never followed up with it.
I guess we were just hoping/praying/wishing that once in remission she would be fine.

Her Left kidney was enlarged, so I just hope it hasn't caused damage.

Constipation does not cause kidney stones
Ibd and other issues have been linked to kidney stones
The kidney tends to enlarge whenever there Luis a kidney stone blocking the passing of urine to the bladder .
The stone needs to be analyzed to determine a a specific diet or other treatment is needed.

My experience with UTI infections is with my middle daughter. She was dx with a condition called renal reflux when she was 2 and half.

UTI are not normal in children so we told.

Well the good news..................................................................................
No signs of kidney problems and no UTI (like always).

The bad news...........................................................................................
I forget what the dx was but it has to do with chronic inflammation of the bladder.

So off to a new specialist, Pediatric Urology.

I mean how many docs can this girl get?
She has a....
GI
Rheumatologist
Orthopedic
Dermatologist
Eye Specialist
Allergist
Surgeon
Dieticians (2)
Physical Therapist
Urologist (new)
And of course a Primary Doctor to direct this circus.:ghug:
I wonder if her GP is sorry she ever accepted Grace as a new patient.:lol:

Constipation can cause urinary retention which sounds like what Grace was experiencing. The frequent urination was just taking the pressure off without resolving the underlying problem.

Faeces bulked up in the rectum can create enough forward pressure on the vagina to in turn press against the urethra. This will then cause urine to be retained within the bladder. The constant presence of urine in the bladder can lead to many potential problems only two of which are: UTI's and kidney infections. Kidney infections because a full bladder that can't empty will cause urine to either reflux back up the ureters into the kidney or it will act like an obstruction also causing the kidney to swell.

My two have had kidney issues called Hydronephrosis. It is a direct result of their Crohn's and is caused by the inflamed bowel pressing against the ureter and causing an obstruction. Once the inflammation is brought under control the problem resolves but it is something that should not be left for extended periods of time as permanent damage can done.
