I have to be up front that anything that has to do with my butt is embarrassing. I don't like asking questions related to it either, but these sensations are driving me crazy.

Has anyone ever had any sharp shooting pains in the @$$? It's hard to describe but it's kind of like a big jab, cramp, spasm, and achy sensation. Sometimes I need to run to the bathroom when it starts, and other times, when I try to go, I can't. It hurts to sit down when that mixed feeling of embarrassing pain starts. To add to the weirdness of this whole thing, there are times when my bottom feels sore and hot. There is nothing weird or unusual that I've been exposed to, trying, or an accidental victim of. The sharp, jabbing, cramping pain is the worst; but the sore, hot feeling is just strange.

Where exactly is the pain though? inside the rectum, on the anus or is it your whole butt, like cheeks and all? is it an inside pain or an outside pain?

You could have a cyst or growth pushing on your rectum, causing pain, diarrhea and also the inability to have a bowel movement.
If its like, your whole butt, I have no idea. You could be experiencing side effects from medications but you said you haven't been exposed to anything wierd lately..
I would see your doctor if you're really concerned or if it's causing problems in your life.

Sometimes when I'm not having a flareup, i get pretty constipated and having a huge bowel movement can cause fissures that bleed and are very painful. Also, having crohn's can cause sores on and around your anus, which are also very painful and can be misdiagnosed as herpes.
thats all i can really tell you :( sorry.
I hope you start feeling better soon. And never be embarrassed abotu your condition. I ALWAYS talk about poop and gross stuff hahah its hilarious

There are actually two places that are bothering me. I think it's mainly on the inside, the rectum. That is where I am getting the weird jabbing, cramping sensation. The sore, hot feeling is on my butt in general. I do have sensitive skin. It almost feels like a sunburn, or like I got a blistering. Being from Alaska, you know I'm not running around in a bikini, and that part of my body is always modestly covered. I haven't changed soaps or laundry detergents. It's been going on for a couple of days. I'm embarrassed to mention this to my GI doctor. WEIRD!

Pain in the Butt

Hi AndiGirl,
I also get the sharp pain/spasms a couple of times a month. It only lasts a short period of time, maybe a minute or two but that’s enough. I think you pretty much answered your own question. It hurts, just like a bad leg cramp only its inside. That’s what I have experienced and I guess when I think about it, that part of the body is also a muscle and must also be subject to cramping. I could live with out it but it happens and I am glad when it stops. I Have Crohns , I find that joking about it seems to help me deal with all the bad stuff that sometimes seems to go on forever. Definitely worth discusing it with your CD Dr. . Hopefully a misplaced leg cramp is all that it is.
PS: I just thought, sometimes when I do heavy lifting, that sometimes will trigger it. Well hang in there. Bob E from Maine

Hot and sore suggests it could be a fistula/abscess forming, any lumps?

Or it could be Proctalgia Fugax - wikipedia - if you have access to a ventalin you could try a couple of puffs and see if it goes away.

I've had this happen to me too a couple times since I was diagnosed. It has happened when I was at work and when I was laying down. It's a sharp pain in the rectum. The pain didn't last long for me though at the most it lasted a minute.

You need to inform your GI about this ASAP. IT's his job to check for things like that - do not be embarrassed! You may have an abccess that will keep growing and may cause more issues.

I get them spasm. Its enough to almost jump out of your chair like what the hell was that! lol
I wonder if we have to stretch down there some how, i don't know but i think that's common. I don't know if I had that before i had UC.

Andi - I call that "The Knife" and I got it for a long time before my surgery. It was a hot, stabbing knife up my rectum accompanied by cramping. Levi could always tell when I was having The Knife because I would clench my hands, or if his arm was closeby, I would grab and squeeze his arm - really hard!

Don't be embarrassed to talk to your doc! If you can't mention ass pain to your GI, who can you talk to you about it??? (Other than us!?)

Get it checked out - better safe than sorry!

- Ames

PS Nice new pic!

Those sound like the sort of pains I was experiencing upwards of 1-3 months before my first fistula reared its ugly head. :( Warm baths helped me. But they're unpredictable. I agree with Swirl...just out of the blue and HHHHEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOO. Yikes!!

So sorry you're having the trouble. As for the shyness...I do understand that completely, but you've absolutely got to make sure to tell your GI everything. Remember that they hear these stories all day every day...and that they want to help! :)

i usually don't curse but when those pains shot up me just as described earlier i threw around some 4 letter words and probably created some new ones. If i can recall i believe i was not long afterwards diagnosed and treated with an abcess/fistula.

I also get these pains maybe about once a week. I love the fact that you call it "The Knife" Ames because that is exactly what it feels like! I usually get it mostly before and after a large BM but recently I get it even more often. I just had an MRI in December and a CT scan in February so I know I don't have any Fistulas or what have you. I just call them my "anal cramps" and my mom laughs her butt off(no pun intended.... ;D).

Thank you for all the support. It really does feel like, "The Knife!" I could have explained it any better. I think I figured out what the burning butt feeling was. Alex, our two-year-old, is in the process of being potty trained. Our sitter was cleaning our toilet seat with one of Scott's special potions. She just happened to use the caustic one that we use for grease stains in the kitchen. Ugh!!! My poor butt! I'm glad to have discovered that one. She honestly thought it was the cleaner/disinfectant. I should have become a detective. LOL!

I get all sorts of pains/aches in my butt after I have a bout of D...I figure its from using it so much. One time I had a really sharp pain during a BM in the rectum...turns out it was a part of my Asacol tablet - the shell - it was coming out of my butt (looked like a pencil shaving) and it was sharp and hurt like it was cutting me! I thought it was a piece of my bones crumbling from all the wear and tear...and then it dawned on me...I recalled from reading the package insert that it could come out in stools.

Hiya Andi

This sounds like Ani Levator Syndrome, the muscles dogs use to wag!

I have it too, and have wrote about it here on the forum
I massage the bum area and it works, so does hot baths.
I feel your pain!
Try not to be embarrassed, see your doc for a rectal exam, I've had a few of those too!
Both my GP and consultant couldn't find anything up there.
Good luck
xxxxx

Thanks again my friends! I'm surprised at how common, butt pains are. The bad thing is they come and go at will.
