C diff then possible strep throat

My son was sick after thanksgiving. He had a virus and tested positive for C Diff. He started Flagyl. We're done with course of flagyl on Dec 22 (21 day course). Tonight my son has a fever...not real high 100.9, and he says his throat feels like a bubble in it (His throat never hurts on past times he's had strep throat..always a bubble) and I know strep is going around the school.

My question: If he has strep throat...how will he be able to take an antibiotic for that when he's still on flagyl...and won't the c diff come back if he's on an antibiotic. Arrgh!!! I just pray its not strep throat.

Any help is much appreciated :)
 
:( Sorry to hear about the possible strep.
It is easier to just have him checked by the ped and give the GI the heads up-Ds's were pretty good about abx a = this abd abx b can not be taken with that etc...
strep exp after a cellutis infection but that it about it.

I would think they could combine flagyl with augmenten/amoxicillin with no problems if it is strep.

Hopefully he doesn't have it! But now tomorrow is going to be a guessing game; do I go to the doctor...do I not... So frustrating. We just got him well after thanksgiving (the stomach flu...then positive for c diff.) He's never tested positive for c diff before. He's had strep many times. Everytime I start to feel like I've climbed to the top of the crohns mountain and think I can do this...I fall back to the bottom. When is there any confidence? I know I'm overreacting. Its probably just a cold and a little fever at the start. I HOPE!! :) I just don't know how you can treat with an antibiotic when he's already on an antibiotic...and I don't want c diff to return. It will, won't it?
 
Thankfully, we've never experienced C-diff here (**knocking on wood) so I really don't know if combining the antibiotics would make it return.

What I do know is Gab was recently put on Cipro for her Crohn's, then she developed an upper respiratory infection that wouldn't go away, so they switched her to Augmenten. She can't take Flagyl anymore due to allergy, so it wasn't a combo. However, she has been on the combo in the past with no problems.
Thing is, with the Humira, he may just be having a harder time fighting off the flu, then the C-diff and maybe while his body was busy fighting those, in came the throat infection?? (just my opinion ~ I tend to try and rationalize :) )

btw..Im pretty sure Cipro can be used to treat strep ?? And we all know here in the Crohn's world that Cipro can be combined with Flagyl ! LOL

My daughter is now testing negative for C Diff. As she had other issues requiring antibiotics, they (successfully) kept her on Flagyl and three other antibiotics. Each one given for a different infection. The infections have all seemed to clear, and the C Diff has not returned.

Hope he gets better soon. About the antibiotics, Andrew had a couple of different antibiotics together with the Flagyl when he had his abscess, so I know there's at least a couple that can combine no problem.
 
I would have him start gargling with a strong mouthwash asap. My son had what I think was very early strep and gargling several times a day and it got better.

Have your Pediatrician check for strep and then call the G.I. to okay whatever prescription they offer. The G.I. will know the best course. When my son was on antibiotics for an ear infection the G.I. had us do probiotics to help avoid Cdiff. Maybe ask your G.I. if it would be helpful?

Grace had c diff a while ago and we were told by her new GP to keep using probiotics.
Sorry to here that your poor kid is going through this. I hope all gets fixed quick.
 
I'm going to take him in tomorrow. They'll test him for strep and influenza. He's never had flu. My husband thinks he has neither. No other symptoms but fever that has never gone above 101.8 and a feeling on 'snot' drainage in back of his throat. No soreness or body aches. He's probably right...but I always like to know for sure!

Fwiw 102 fever , mild sore throat and stomach pain ( not really a new thing for DS)
Was his only symptoms of strep a few weeks ago.
 
Sorry, I'm not good with the abbreviations on here! What's Fwiw or DS? A few weeks ago he had some stomach virus that ended with positive test for C Diff. (Nov 30th) He's been on flagyl since. His only symtoms (so far) is just the fever and congestion in his nose and drainage down his throat. No pain anywhere

Matt has never had C Diff but he has been on a combo of antibiotics. He was on Flagyl for his Crohn's and Augmentin Duo Forte for his abscess for 3 months.
When in hospital with an IV you will often find another antibiotic will be thrown into the mix as well, so three all up.

Well, no strep. Positive test for influenza type B. They prescribed Tamiflu since he's a crohn's kid and also on Humira. Hope it helps him. He vomited last night and once today. I used to love this time of year...now its just a headache

Farmwife, So Funny!! Once I texted something to a girl I was teamed up with on concessions that was a bit sarcastic, she texted back LMAO. I had to ask my daughter what it meant!! "Laughing my a** off". I said "Oh...I was being funny in my text!" My daughter responded, 'It's really funny if the response is LMFAO'. I'm 47, I need a texting dictionary!!
 
We're going through the virus with Grace too. No holiday fun here.

Here's some more texting that had me stumped.
SIL=sister-in-law
MIL=mother-in-law
BIL=brother-in-law
FIL=father-in-law
OMG=Oh my Gosh
BF=best friend.
TIS=Texting is stupid (Just made that up)

FWIW that's the depth of my texting knowledge.

Hope the Tamiflu kicks in quick! I know what you mean about the texting. One of Andrew's friends texts the most bizarre abbreviations - no one can figure out what he means! :biggrin:
 
So sorry to hear about your son's flu diagnosis. I am just praying that we don't pick anything up. We actually have had c-diff before and it isn't much fun. We were put on Augmentin and flagyl when we were trying to heal up our son's absyst on his bottom. The augmentin made his crohn's flare up with bleeding and diarehea. We then got off of that so that makes me wonder how we are going to handle antibiotics as well.
PS that is nice to read about texting abbreviations. I was wondering what they all meant. HA HA
 
Ask the Gi if they will call in some zofran to keep the vomiting under control.
Sorry he is sick.
Hope he is up and running by Christmas.
 
Sorry you guys are going through a tough time.C-diff is a nightmare.Max got pneumonia last week and ended up in the hospital getting antibiotics through an IV. He gets every illness known to man and then some.I blame it on the Humira.
 
Kathy, did Brian get the flu vac?

Did your daughter tell you what LMFAO meant too??:) Cause mine would have been quick to oblige!
 
This is for Brian's Mom. I sympathize, C.Diff is awful,My daughter, still battling after her 4th round of Flagyl. For a few comfort measures: Prescription Rectal Phenergan has been a lifesaver for the nausea.Someone I saw suggested Zofran; also good-my daughter got headache from it, though. Good luck, I feel your frustration.
 
The Tamiflu was Awesome!! He started feeling better the 2nd day into taking it. He ended up with just some sniffles.

Max's Mom: Is Max on weekly? Brian seems to be getting more sick after going weekly, but then I remind myself...everyone at school is sick! Last winter was so mild, and so far...so is this one. I heard people say this was going to be a bad sick season; for everyone! So Its probably not Humira. It just causes a problem with delaying his Humira. (The guessing game is what I hate!)

Dexky: We were wanting the flu shot, but everytime we were going to get it, he's get sick! I asked GI nurse today about it. She said the shot is mainly for the H1N1 etc which is influenza type A, He had type B. She said shot wouldn't have helped him.
And, yes...she defined LMFAO!! I immediately thought...How come I wasn't that funny? Only got a LMAO!

C diff seems to be gone. We're testing next week to be sure. He's had no symptoms even from day 1 of taking flagyl. I wonder if his body kicked it by itself. But glad we did flagyl. Brian never has any flagyl problems. It seems to help him.

Glad you guys are doing better.Max is on weekly Humira.He just seems to get sick a lot.Not to long ago he had a staph and strep infection around the eye area.The only issue right now is the coughing that never seems to go away.I'm always waiting for the next thing to hit,I know there will be one.
 
Glad to hear he's feeling better! This is an awful time of year for colds/flu. Devynn and I got out flu shot in Oct (first time in a couple of years) and I'm SO glad because everyone around us seemed to get the flu. We both got a fairly mild head cold.
 
GI appt today. She is stretching us back out on the Humira!! Out to 10 days instead of weekly.
Max's Mom: GI mentioned she thinks Brian is getting sick more often because of doing weekly shots. Her intentions were to go weekly until he was out of his flare that came on for no reason last Aug. She wants to hopefully get back out to 2 weeks. Something tells me that won't happen. When Brian had the flu we had to delay his shot and went 11 days. No crohn's symptoms. So maybe he just needs less than 2 weeks, but not as soon as weekly. I hope!
 
:) That sounds good Kathy! I'm a little relieved to hear that in light of all the talk of EJ going to weekly. Knowing that it can be stretched back out would make me less apprehensive!

I'm glad you guys are doing good.How did Brian's bloodwork look?Does he have a big appetite and can he eat pretty much everything?Max is rarely hungry and gets full as soon as he starts to eat.He is already starting to loose the weight he gained with the picc-line.We try to do some Carnation breakfast drinks instead of food.They don't cause so much irritation in his system.By the way,for you guys on Humira.Where do you give the shots?We do them in the legs.Very painful.We use numbing cream and ice.I know it's supposed to not hurt as much in the stomach but he is not willing to try.Sometimes it just takes forever for the shot to go in.
 
Brian's labs were normal. His SED was at 26, but since the CRP was normal, dr thinks SED is up a bit because of him just having the flu.

Mark: Yes! I was surprised and happy to stretch it out. Glad to hear she really is going to try to get back to 2 weeks. I thought she was just humoring me month to month. She said she wanted to beef up the tnf blockers for awhile to get him back on track. Steroids don't work much on Brian.

Max's Mom: We ice until his skin is pinkish red, he is apprehensive but then just a 'Huh'. It it isn't like that he feels the pain. We also grab up as much of his meat in his thigh as possible so its going into what fat he has! As for his eating...when he's not flaring...which is now, he eats mostly anything. He's eliminated things himself that bother him. Ie: popcorn, processed meats, milk, raw ruffage like apple skins, celery...etc

GI DR did prescribe periactin to stimulate his appetite. Pharmacist told me this is an old allergy med. It has a side affect of weight gain. She said it could cause drowsiness so I gave it to him at night. She also said it could cause dryness...Boo! He already has trouble with dry skin...but Humira seems to make him sniffly, so maybe it will help that. Anyone else heard of this for an appetite stimulus?
 
DS was on it for a month or so.
The dryness is the sinus and mouth etc...
It is an old school antihistamine so be ware if he takes others such as Zyrtec or Claritin. Or Benadryl .
I would love to say it made DS hungry but .... Not so much
Also didn't relieve his stomach pain
Also remember kids build up a tolerance to the drug so if it is working and making him hungry ask the Gi how you should cycle it to keep it working

Kathy, has Brian ever tried any of the protein shakes? We've been giving EJ Boost High-protein just to add some nutrition and he likes them. I tasted one of the chocolate ones. What's not to like??
 
Kathy - Claire won't drink boost BUT her brother (the EoE kid) drinks them like crazy. He's my maniacal varsity swimmer that has trouble keeping weight on. They work well for him and he LOVES the taste.

We were on periactin for a short while...if I remember correctly it was to decrease motility to reduce pain though. Hoping you are able to lengthen the time between shots...weekly is tough (although I had a hard time remembering biweekly lol!)
 
I've tried the High protein Boost...Very Vanilla. I liked it too! I bought Brian the kids version of ensure and boost...I ended up drinking them cause Brian is so resistant to any of that kind of stuff. I don't know why. He doesn't like milk...so maybe that's it.

There are some recipes online for Boost/Ensure shakes if your kids are getting tired of the tastes. Blend a banana in or add some peanut butter. This is especially nice if they are on a liquid diet for awhile too.
 
I told the wife we were out of the choco high protein Boost so she comes home with vanilla. EJ hates them. Next, she comes home with choco Ensure…EJ hates them, says they're too choco, as if that were possible. He mixes them with some milk and can drink them but I have to push and prod! I told her to get the Boost!!!
