Hi everyone, i was hoping to see what you guys think about what my symptoms are. I've basically been feeling a little tired and nothing too worrying. But I'll get sudden and very painful cramps with nausea. I've not thrown up yet or anything but it's really worrying me as I was finally getting to eating sort of decently and now it seems things are turning for the worse again. After I have a bm, it will subside and I'll feel okay for a while.

I called my GI and he recommended a liquid diet for 24 hours and if the pain doesn't get better to go to the hospital. Does anyone think this will help or have any idea what might be causing this?

I know that I only vomit when I'm heading towards a blockage and by the sound of it, a lot of others on here are the same. Stick to the liquid diet but don't hesitate to head to the hospital if you feel things aren't improving.

It could be something you're intolerant of?
Try excluding milk, dairy and stick to a low residue diet for a few days. Keep a journal of everything you've eaten and log it when the pains appear.
If you start vomiting, then you could be blocked, go straight to A&E!

I've not vomited but I've gotten very close to it.

I've been doing low residue for a weeks now so I don't think it could be my diet or anything. I've knocked out basically every problem food already! This is why I called the doc, I just don't know what to do now.

Yes the pain has gotten better. The pain isnt constant though. It comes suddenly and I'll have intense pain and cramping and nausea but after I have a lot of D it gets better. I haven't gone at all since I started the diet though. Also, I called my doc and he won't be available until later to tell me what I should do next.

Would a blockage or narrowing be constant pain or would it be like this?

Hi Alex, with Meg's narrowing she ate, had excrutiating pain and a few hours later vomited. As soon as she was put on a liquid diet the pain and vomiting stopped. xx

Dallies, thank you for the response. I am going to try eating some rice and see if it goes down well. Should I go to the hospital with these symptoms? If I'm not mistaken, a narrowing won't get better on it's own will it?

Megan's didn't no that is why she had surgery. I can only speak of our experiences perhaps others will have different advice. Personally yes I would seek advice from the hospital x

Alright. I decided to wait until my doc calls me back to eat anything. Was Megs pain sudden or constant? I'm not in much pain now, just discomfort.

With liquid (Ensure Plus) no pain, with food even rice and chicken she had terrible pain (constant) then a couple of hours later the vomiting started.

Hiya Alex

I think that if you were blocked, you'd know about it! It is the most excrutiating pain you'll ever experience, with projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea. There's no where for it to go, ya see? Only up and out. You will also have fever, raised temp and the pain is constant, with radiating pain in hip and thigh, and lower back.
These pains might/may be the start of inflammation. Speak to your doc, he might be able to prescribe something, but don't forget, any vomiting, sure sign of blockage.

I see. I have no pain until the cramping and nausea start, usually while eating. But mostly, the pain isn't there and then it suddenly hits me and lasts until I have a lot of D. My worry is that I'm heading toward a blockage or narrowing and I'd like to take care of it sooner rather than later.

Hi Joan,

So a blockage seems unlikely since the pain and cramping isn't really there most of the time. Hopefully it's simply inflammation and can be fixed with more prednisone. I really don't want any sort of surgery or anything! :(

I used to get similar symptoms...would eat and a few minutes later be running to the toilet doubled over with cramps and D....after that would be fine again for a few hours until the next round.......you could have an area in your small intesting that is inflamed/ulcerated and that is what is causing the intermittent pain.......once the food is past it the pain is gone.....

Yes that's what I'm figuring is going on. My stools aren't solid at all either when I go. I've been on 30mg of pred for 3 weeks now and it's going to decrease on friday. I'm just worried that it isn't really bringing me out of this flare and maybe I need a higher dose. My doc basically told me to deal with the pain and D or go to the hospital if the pain is too unbearable.

Hiya Alex

Yes, blockage sounds unlikely at this stage. This is cos your pains are not constant with vomiting. But it could be the start of narrowing. upping your Pred to a higher dose might work, and stay on this higher dose for at least a month for it to blitz any inflammation. Sometimes if we taper too fast before it's had a chance to work can bring on symptoms you're describing. Pred healed me nicely, but it took nearly 6 months, the slower the taper, the better the healing.
hope you feel better soon xxx

Thank you Astra. I'm seeing a doc for a second opinion tomorrow. Was lucky to get an appt for tomorrow. Hopefully this doc will find a more effective treatment for me. I'm noticing more pain and discomfort when eating so I don't think the dose I'm at is helping.
