Okay, I'm trying this, as well as raw milk. But I would never stop taking my Pentasa.
I do believe the research makes sense. I bought raw milk yesterday and it has felt very soothing to my guts.

Considering almost all the food products in the grocery store are processed foods, I don't believe adding lots of whole foods, real foods, will hurt me.

I don't believe these things will "cure" me, but they may help.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

coconut oil???? this is news to me. What have you heard about it? I would love to know. I also would never stop taking my meds, but if something like this can help. I'm all for it. Please message me, as I'm not here often and have a hard time finding previous posts.
Thanks

Interestingly enough researchers have demonstrated the benefits of coconut oil on patients with digestive problems, including, Crohn's disease, at least since the 1980s. The anti-inflammatory and healing effects of coconut oil apparently play a role in soothing inflammation and healing injury in the digestive tract which are characteristic of Crohn's disease.

Its antimicrobial properties also affects intestinal health by killing troublesome microorganisms that may cause chronic inflammation.

While the cause of Crohn's disease is still unknown, many doctors feel it is the result of a bacterial or viral infection. Stomach ulcers, for example, are caused primarily by the bacterium H. pyloris.

The bacteria bore into the stomach wall causing ulcerations and discomfort characteristic of the condition. It's possible that this bacterium or a similar one could also infect other areas of the digestive tract.

Several studies have shown that the measles and mumps viruses might be involved. A persistent low-grade measles infection in the intestine is common in many Crohn's and ulcerative colitis patients. The infection is localized in the digestive tract so it does not cause a full-scale case of the measles.

Those who have had measles or mumps in the past and now suffer from some type of inflammatory bowel disease (1BD) such as Crohn's disease of ulcerative colitis are likely to harbor a low-grade intestinal infection that the body has not been able to overcome. The evidence for measles infection as a cause or at least a contributing factor in IBD is very convincing.

In one study, for example, 36 Crohn's disease patients, 22 ulcerative colitis patients, and 89 people free of IBD symptoms (controls) were tested. Twenty-eight of the 36 Crohn's disease patients (78%) and 13 of 22 ulcerative colitis patients (59%) tested positive to the measles virus as compared to only 3 of 89 (3.3%) controls.

H. pylori bacteria and the measles virus are both killed by the MCFA in coconut oil. If the symptoms characteristic in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are also caused by these or some other microorganism then coconut oil may be beneficial in treating these conditions.

Eating macaroons to ease symptoms of Crohn's disease, as strange as it may sound, does have some scientific backing. For those who have Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers, or other digestive problems you don't have to eat coconut cookies to get relief. Eating foods rich in Virgin Coconut Oil, which is high in MCFAs, would work just as well if not better.

I take 2 tablespoons a day of organic virgin coconut oil in my weight gainer shake. I can't say that I notice a huge difference in my tummy when I don't take it, but research says it's good for you (and Crohnies especially) and the virgin oil really tastes like coconut and is delicious!

It is proven to be an anti-inflammatory and goes straight through your intestines, so I can't imagine that it doesn't help a little bit with calming them down. Good luck!

It DOES taste good.
I think sometimes when people take things and don't get amazing results, they assume the supplement is not working.
But the good stuff is still in there.
I take Juice Plus. It gives me energy, but I believe the best thing it does is put tons of phytochemicals into my body.
Some people don't get the energy boost and quit taking it.

It's definitely a different flavor than regular ice cream, so go into it with an open mind. The vanilla is a bit odd, but the chocolate is good. There are other flavors, but I got stuck with the chocolate. :)

There is yoghurt available in australia made on coconut milk it tastes great, a little expensive though. My naturopath has been a big advocate of coconut oil for years. When I was on my elemental diet i got my choc fix by mixing a little natural cocoa with coconut oil and setting it in the fridge in ice cub tray.

You can add a little sugar to make it extra good. I add small amount of xylitol but I know its often advised to avoid with crohns, I have no probs with it. I also make a dairy free custard by using coconut milk instead of dairy milk mixed with custard powder. i find I can often substitute with coconut milk in lots of recipes.

Coconut oil sounds interesting. I may try it. Don't do the raw milk! Milk doesn't make any sense with our disease. Why drink another species' milk filled with antibiodics, pus, blood, and other crazy things from a tired, factory-farmed cow that has been fed (among other things) grain that it can't digest and food that even contains its own species in it! I think Milk caused my crohns because I would eat dairy all the time. I loved it. But I think that is what causes our disease.
Or try it for a while as you say and see if it works. After all, I dont really know for sure, and we should all have an open mind. For me, though, I continued to eat that way, and it didnt help, so I stopped having dairy, and at least I can see a little improvement.

BTW, I am trying the raw milk but I do NOT want to encourage it to anyone. I am just sharing. I would feel awful if some of you tried it and it made you feel worse.

It sure sounds like you did your research and know about going for the right cows as opposed to the other ones that your article mentions.
Yeah, I don't really want to cause anyone to make big switches in their diets just based on what I say, either, because I dont really know.
This is the book, though, that I thought was especially interesting: www [dot] the [dot] chinastudy [dot] com
If anyone is looking for anything they havent tried before, give this book a read. Its not your typical popular diet book. It was written by a doctor, heavily referenced, he gave his whole life to this line of research. VERY convincing.

Anybody notice all those benefits of coconut oil/butter??
On the label of my coconut oil jar the nutritional info says that a 10 gram serve contains the following:
Energy 350kj
Protein 0g
Fat Total 10g
Saturated Fat 9.2g of which 4.8g is Lauric acid
Monounsaturated .8g
Carbohydrates 0g
Sugars 0g

Who says a high fat diet is not healthy?
Coconut oil is a very important part of my diet too.
I have had remarkable results on a high fat, high protein diet with very little carbs. I have been able to lower my pred dose from 50mg to zero in the last nine months by following the lifestyle suggested in a book called "Life without bread". I have had such a hard time kicking carbs (by carbs I mean all foods containing grains, nuts and any type of sugar which includes fruit) especially sugar but the benefits of a little will power far outweigh the inconvenience of 25-30 trips to the toilet a day that I used to experience. It seems to me the good old food pyramid that suggests foods that we should eat everyday is not all its cracked up to be. For the doubters out there I had a colonoscopy 2 weeks ago that showed some inflammation was still present but compared to pictures taken during a colonoscopy 9 months ago the inflammation has decreased remarkably. Then again after being diagnosed with Crohns 15 years ago and experiencing very bad flare ups I wouldn't expect to have all inflammation disappear after only 9 months of a controlled diet. I know this would not be suitable for all people but I just wanted to share how fantastic I feel.

Cheers

Hey Peter! So happy to hear that you were able to taper off of prednisone after starting your diet! How cool!!! I am also not on any meds, just using diet and all natural ways. Check out my blog too, if you're interested in alternatives to complement your diet!

After 9 months, are you off of all meds? How do you feel compared to being on steroids? Have you had any complications by being off the meds? I don't find many people who are not on any meds.

Hi cdugas8, Looking back I have had crohns symptoms since my teenage years but was not diagnoised untill I was 28 years old. So for the last 15 years I have suffered just like most other people on this forum with frequent flares and constant meds. For those 15 years I have survived on 50mg of pred or higher plus sulofalc and Imuran each day just to keep flares under control and then when I would try to decrease the pred I would only get down to 25mg and I would start to flare again. At the start of this year I had a particuarly bad flare and spent 3 weeks off work as I was unable to leave the house. Deperation set in and I started thinking that what I had been doing was not helping at all. I was stuck in a vicious cycle I wasn't able to break. I started the SCD diet but it had no effect after 3 weeks of very hard work to stick with it. I then heard of the book "Life without bread". I read the book and after only 2 weeks my usual symptoms started to decrease. After 2 months I started to decrease the pred to see what would happen. For the first time in 15 years I had been able to get the pred down under 25mg. After 6 months I was able to stop the Imuran and get the pred down to 5mg. After 9 months med free. Being on a high fat, high protein and very low carb diet has given me back my life.

Cheers
Peter

Hey peter, its great to see your having good results with a low grain based diet. Its also encouraging to me as im a firm believer in grains/legumes causing many of the problems not only Crohns sufferers develop but many of the so called 'normal' health issues most people are put through.

Hi ben90,
Yes I am having fantastic results with the diet. I do need to correct you though as I am not on a low grain diet. I am on a zero grain, zero sugar, zero processed food and very low carb diet. This elimination diet has had some great side benefits as well. I used to get lesions on my face when the crohns was flaring and they would take forever to heal, I would wake up in the mornings with my mouth full of blood because my gums would bleed constantly. Now the lesions are almost completely healed and my gums don't even bleed when I brush my teeth. How is that for side effects. Here is a link (you will have to type it into your browser) that I use to supplement the diet I follow in the book "Life without Bread"

Jeez I hope I am allowed to post that here

Cheers
