Well- thought I'd look here for some insight - and yes, I did call the Dr today before even seeing her (after talking to my Mom).....

History -
Sunday evening I noticed her eyes were red - looked like the start of pinkeye - started using erythromycin ointment (from previous eye infection).....also noticed a red dot over her right eye in the eyebrow area - looked like a mosquito bite.

Monday - kept her home from school as her eyes were still quite red, and under her right eye was red, looked like cellulitis/cellulosis wanted to start (she had this before too a few years ago).....

Tuesday - eye looked ok to me this morning when I got her up at 6am before heading to work.....husband said her eye was a little bit swollen but nothing major. Got a call from the school nurse before noon - teacher had sent her to the nurse because her eye was swollen...ice pack applied.

@3pm, got off the bus and my Mom said her eye was almost swollen shut, with swelling down her cheek. Called the Dr, said benadryl, keep an eye on it and if any worse in the am, or eye discharge call back for appointment.

Gave her benadryl @615pm, didn't see any difference, did say her chest was itchy but I didn't see any bumps etc.....

The pictures are from about 9pm tonight.....

Any guesses on what the heck I am dealing with here??? If it was a reaction to a bug bite, it shouldn't have taken 2 days to appear!

update- dr thinks it is some type of infection - so now she is on augmentin for 10 days. Poor little thing can barely open her eye.....but is soooo good about taking her medicine (tastes yukky, but will take it anyway!).....

I feel so bad for your daughter, her eyes look terrible. this has happened to my daughter before but hers was that she has severe allergies and she had rubbed them raw bc they were itchy and irritated them while she was taking a nap or sleeping, and when she awoke they were swelled shut, benedryl did help abit but we did have to get antibiotics bc she had rubbed dirt in them from her hands and infected them. Hope she feels better soon. Shannon

It looks like a sty. Try rubbing a gold ring against it and see if that helps.:)

thankfully my husband has told me her swelling has been going down today - and this was before she started antibiotics...I can't wait to see her in about an hour to see how she looks!

was she bit by something? I am pretty sure it can take 2 days or longer for it to surface.
she will be okay :) You're a good mom :D

It does look like she got an insect bite of some sort. Poor thing! It looks very uncomfortable. I hope she starts feeling better soon.

PS - What a cutie - look at those curls!

thanks all - her eye was almost back to normal this morning.....and she is such a good girl taking her medicine!

Hi - I'm glad you got her on antibiotics. Did she have any sinus symptoms prior to the swelling? The most important thing to exclude would have been preseptal (orbital) cellulitis, which usually occurs from "inside out" (like sinusitis extending to the outer eye) or "outside in" (like an external bug bite spreading into eye). The big worry is that the brain is quite close to the eye socket, so if there is pain with moving the eye, vision changes, or high fever, a CT scan is necessary to make sure it's just outside the eye and not moving inward.

However, it sounds like she's doing great! Glad to hear everything worked out well! : )
-Doc
