Hi my names Brooke I'm 23 years old and recently had a bad flare up that put me in hospital for a week. I've had crohns scince 2009 and this is the first bad flare I've had scince before I was diagnosed. I would love some advise on diet. I used to eat pretty much what I want when I want but have now changed to as much fresh and healthy food. No cured meat. Soy instead of cows milk and butter. Trying to cut out preservatives but it's so hard they are in everything!!! I have indulged and had a bit of chocolate and ice cream but it didn't seem to affect me. The only thing I feel I have a problem with is high fat foods. I get really scared to try anything that isn't fresh or is packaged. Am I being too causious or is this a good way to be? What kind of foods do u guys eat? I've been out of hospital 3 weeks and am on prednisone and tapering down, I haven't really had any problems with any food and this is just a bit confusing? Ive limited myself to 1 soy coffee per day also have cut out alcohol but would like to have one or two drinks from time to time. Is that ok? And if so what's the best if any to stick to when having a few drinks?
Sorry to babble on but I'm just really keen to hear what other people are doing and to see if I'm heading in the right direction. Can't wait to hear from you guys.
Thanks a bunch x :thumleft:

Hey and welcome! Unfortunately with crohn's the diet aspect of it is completely trial and error. In my personal experience I'm like you by eating healthy, fresh foods but I find that because I do I can "afford" to eat unhealthy here and there. IE: Fast food, alcohol, etc. It really depends on the person though. There are some members on here on very strict diets because anything else just makes them feel like complete crap and than there are people who are the total opposite that can tolerate anything/almost anything.

I don't drink milk or eat much cheese (because of taste) but I have skim milk in my morning coffee once a day and don't have problems. Same with alcohol, I've definitely drank too much before and although you feel like crap the next day, nothing crohns related happened. There are lots of people on here who always drink alcohol in moderation with no problems at all.

Have you thought about keeping a food diary? That's really the best way to find what works for you personally. Were all like snowflakes, there are no two alike! Lol

I see you don't take any medication anymore? Hopefully I can one day get to that once I'm under control. I have been keeping a food diary and it's been a great help!!! I'm glad to hear that I'm doing something right. I just can't wait to be able to eat something without being terrified I'll end up back in hospital. Thanks for your reply I really appreciate it :)

Lol yes I am at the moment. You can pm me if you'd like to talk about that. Everyone has their own view of it but I personally think diet makes a huge difference with crohns. After all, why don't they have crohns in countiries like Africa and other third world countries? Could it be becaused they don't have all this processed crap? They might not have muich but their food is a hell of a lot healthier than ours. To further that I actually spoke with a doctor who came to Canada from Africa and until he came and learned about it he had no idea what crohns was. Interesting, isn't it?

It unfortunately will be a process where certain foods might make you feel like crap but as long as you stay away from the things like super spicy foods and some others that even make normal people feel like crap you'll be okay. I could be wrong but I don't think you would ever be hospitalized for eating a piece of something
