I got diagnosed with crohns disease in 2007, i have never been quite right since. I was rushed to hospital last night because of constipation. When i get pain i can relieve it by going to the toilet but because of the constipation i could not relieve the pain. Right now i'm back home because i discharged myself but i still cant get rid of the constipation. I can go to the toilet a little bit but not enough and it burns. I cant shake the feeling of needing the toilet either. I took codiene and i think that may be the cause. Having a hot bath seems to settle and soothe me but i just want to know what i do about the constipation. I have never experienced it before with my crohns and i'm worried by takin laxitives i could irritate my intestines and bowel further. Please help i'm in so much pain :(

Hi Hannah, codiene can make constipation worse, it definitely does for me. You should get it checked out as you may have a narrowing or a blockage. I have a narrowing that made me badly constipated and I was prescribed fybogel, but that wasn't working properly so they had to add lactulose. But you shouldn't take them without seeing your GP though

Hi hannah codeine is an absolute no no for IBD sufferers . I took it once & it made me so constipated it caused me to have a bladder infection too . Hope u feel better soon . Maybe take fibogel every day to help with it . Kind regards em

Hi hannah codeine is an absolute no no for IBD sufferers .

I disagree. Sometimes it is the only thing that can help IBD diarrhea.

However, if you are constipated, codeine will certainly make it worse.

hello Hannah
Have you tried drinking hot water, or hot tea, it might help to get things moving.
Another thing to do to avoid the constipation is to increase the soluble fibre in your diet.
Currently you should not be trying anything harsh since you may be obstructing.
I understand about leaving the hospital but it may be the best place to help you right now
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes
Trysha
