Hello,

I was diagnosed with Crohn 2 years ago,
My height is 1.65cm , and i used to Weight 60kg, and was looking very good and in shape...
Since then after trying many medications which didn't work for me, i have lost 4kg and look very very very very THIN ( while having flares, my body wasn't consuming all the food i ate )

Next week im going to start with Humira, and i hope it will work with me :)
Will being in remission help me gain my Weight back easily if i eat alot and have an Energy drinks ( Protein and Calories drinks which used for Bodybuilding )?
Another thing is, after doing tests for my bones and hips, they told me that they got smaller or something, will being in remission help my bones grow back to normal since my body will consume the food i eat and not having flares and diarrhea after every meal ?

I want to gain my weight back, i want to get normal as i used to!! :(

Thanks

Hello there Leopardos! I think you could definitely gain back your weight while in remission. I had a terrible flare last year and dropped over 30 pounds, and was also very skinny. After being treated briefly with prednisone, I managed to get back into remission, and was placed on Imuran and Humira. Since then, I've managed to gain back most of my weight and am looking and feeling healthy.

When you do start to try and gain back weight, remember that the trick is to eat and drink higher calorie. :) Eating more doesn't necessarily help -- it's more about eating higher calorie when you do eat.

Im not struggling with Crohn that much, Thanks god,
i have just Diarrhea, 2 times a day, not a big deal...

The weight is the one killing me, im getting married in August and want to look good..
Is it possible to gain 3-5kg in 4.5 months taking Humira? while eating much and Bodybuilding protin/Calories drinks?

5kg isnt much in 4.5 months right ? :O

I feel for you, I myself lost a lot of weight from my stomach issues and I always wanted to become a bodybuilder... Still in the progress of gaining it back

5kg seems totally reasonable to me! I managed more than that even without the protein/calorie drinks, so I think you'll be able to do that pretty easily once you start absorbing food better. :)

From the guy's side of things, it is absolutely possible. Before remicade/aza gave me remission, I ran about 145 pounds. Now I am back to about 170, very close to where I was before crohn's got me. Now I just need to get my conditioning back...

I've been in remission since my resection in November.I went from 193 to 160 pounds.I couldn't gain weight and kept losing muscle.

I've been taking Pentasa for approximately five weeks now.500mg twice a day.I feel so much better!I'm 170 pounds now and I'm getting muscle back.

I am in remission. It may be surgical remission, but I seem to benefit from my food.I started going to the gym and want to take advantage of feeling better.

I'm 5'9" and feel good at the weight I am now.I don't want to weigh 193 again!

I had my own calorie/protein drink that I made at home. About a cup of milk, sometimes more, some chocolate syrup, a couple raw eggs and about a table spoon of vanilla. You could swap out the chocolate syrup for cocoa powder and sugar if you want a little more control. Mix it up in a blender, and you are good to go. If you like, you can throw a little ice cream in too. Lots of calories, protein and less fat than something like ensure (unless you throw in the ice cream). Yummy!

I'm living proof that you can gain weight back in remission because that is what is currently happening to me...I'm in my first remission ever, taking 6-mp and unfortunately I am gaining TOO much weight now and considered mildly overweight in size. Pre-crohns I was about 185lbs. During my flares I dropped as low as about 165lbs. but averaged 170lbs. about six months into remission and I am near 190lbs.

I try to make healthy choices daily and eat clean meals 8 times out of 10 but unfortunately I do give into hunger more easily now that I am finally able to eat again and my portion sizes and/or frequency with which I eat has also increased maybe more than it should have. I'm about to start a fitness routine to help try and get things under control.

So yes, it is possible to regain weight depending on the severity of your condition but I would advise that you eat mindfully and still work to avoid processed and highly fatty foods and sugars to help keep inflammation at bay. Medication works for many, but it's usually the combination of both mediation and healthy lifestyle choices that make remission a longer lasting experience.

Ask your doctor to get your calcium levels checked to see if you have signs of osteoperosis or osteoarthritis. Being on certain medications, including steroids, can zap your body of calcium which your bones need in order to grow and stay strong. Ask if calcium supplementation or a diet rich in calcium would benefit you because of your now smaller bones.
